-Gold dosed in New York, yesterday, at
12|.
-Golton closed quiet but ?rm; uplands 194
cents; Bales 1300 bales.
-In Liverpool cotton closed strong; up?
lands 9?d; Orleans 9|d; sales 15,000 bales.
? -Dark hair, so long neglected and despised
among the ladles, ls again in the ascendant,
fickle lashlon having tired of the blondes.
-The cases of a white man and colored wo?
man in Georgia have lately been mentioned,
who were convicted ol an offence under the
stat otes ofthat State in intermarrying. After
sentence they were brought before Judge
. Erskine, of the United States District Court,
. on Tuibeas corpus, their counsel claiming that
the statute in question conflicted with the civil
rights bili. Judge Erskine, decided the point
not well taken, and ordered' the parties re.
mantled to the custody of the sheri fi* for exe?
cution of the sentence of the State Court.
-It ls said that on a certain occasion Henry
Ward Beecher preached a sermon on the in
. justice of obliging men to work: on Sunday.
The next day, while riding down to. Fulton
Ferry, he entered into conversation with u
car-driver, and asked if he did not think some
plan might be adopted to dispense with the
need di running the cars all day Sunday. The
driver, in Ignorance of his interrogating
friend, made a frank i.ply: "Yes sir, I think
there might. But there's no hope- for lt so
long -LS t ney keep that Beecher theatre open
lu Brooklyn, j The cars have to run to accom?
modate that." * .
-The English press, which inste'.ed that the
Suez Canal could never he constructed, have
latterly, persisted in asserting that lt was
rapidly niling up with sand, and must soon
become useless, except at the. cost Of con?
tinued" and enormously expensive dredging.
H. de Lesseps has just written a letter which
flatly contradicts these assertions, and in
which he says that "the deposits of sand
brought by the wind are insignificant, and the
aides of the basin are so solid that outlines
projecting at different points, after eighteen
months' use, present scarcely a perceptible
variation in the conformation of the slope."
. -Qelmbpld, lt seenu, is insane. The Long
Branch News, of the 22d i n stanr, says r "It is
the opinion of physicians who have examined
Dr. Helmbold that he ls laboring under a tem?
porary derangement of mind, occasioned by
bis business difficulties, and that the statement
that the unfortunate aCk.tr of yesterday morn
ing*was the result of excessive drinking is in?
correct, as to the Immediate cause. A profes?
sional examination was made yesterday by Dr.
T. G. Chattle, in the presence of Judge Guild,
of Newark, and Mr. MatseU, of New York,
who acted as Dr. Helmbold's legal advisers in
the case, which resulted in recommending his
EOjourn in the asylum Of Dr. Kirkbride, at
Philadelphia."
-The vote in'Norih Carolina on the ques?
tion of a convention was the heaviest one ever
cast in ?hat State, and . will foot np nearly
I80,0ca The majority against the convention
will be about 5000. Eighty-three counties
giro a majority of 10,231, but the remaining
seven will probably reduce this one-half.. One
object in culling the convention was to effect
some arrangement with the holders ol the
enormous State debt which the Radical miers
had contracted, and which the revenues ol
the State are inadequate to meet. But the
Convention is defeated, the people of North
Carolina being deterred irom voling for it by
the threat of Federal disfavor, and they must
bear the burdens imposed by usurpers until
they can be removed In some other manner.
-It is a sttdden and inglorious termination
of a most brilliant career-that of the racer
Longfellow-provided the story of his strained
tendon be true. The noble animal is surely
lame, but whether temporarily or permanent?
ly cannot be foreseen. At any rate, his "race
Is run" for the present, and on-Wednesday
evening old John Harper wended his tvay to
the Saratoga depot, slowly and sorrowfully,
en route for Kentucky. He wore his celebrated
linsey-woolsey coat and carried his faithful
walking-stick, but his countenance was de?
jected and the cheerful cigar was absent.
Longfellow was put aboard the train, and
honored with a whole car set apart lor his ex?
clusive accommodation; and a little negro boy
was detailed and carefully enjoined by the
owner to "look out lor that leg." The care
started, and Harper and Longfellow, who had
been twenty-four hours before the observed of
all observers, left the scene ol their triumphs
and defeats with scarcely an eye to watch
their departure. Mr. Harper is a veteran in
the horse-raising line, but bas been singularly
unfortunate. His three ventures this year,
Express, Littleton and Longfellow, have ali
proved losers, though it is said his aggregate
gains exceed his actual lossee. But he is not
discouraged, and will "try his luck" again.
-On Saturday, the 29th of July, a screw
steamer left Liverpool, with a valuable cargo
of dry goods and assorted merchandise, bound
?or Chicago; and on Monday, the 21st Instant,
that port was reached in safety, after a voyage
of twenty-two days. As might be expected,
the inland "City by the Sea" was thrown into
raptures over this feat, and at once predicted
for itself an Immense and independent traffic
with all the countries o'f the globe in the future,
without having to draw its supplies from New
York and the Atlantic seaboard. Whether this
expectation will be fulfilled or not is yet a
problem to be solved. The feat of direct
importation, without .'transhipment, has
been successfully accomplished, and the
probability is that this attempt will be follow?
ed up by others on a more extensive scale.
The time by these direct shipments is much
quicker than that which can be depended
upon by importing via New York, where
goods are usually detained from ten to twenty
days in the customhouse, in addition to the
twelve days, or more, on the ocean; and then,
again, lrom three to seven days on the rail?
road, with high charges for transportation.
The inducements' to try direct Importation are,
therefore, tempting; and that the spirit is
there also is sufficiently shown by the fact that
several of the heaviest mrrchants ol Chicago
have already adopted this new mode of impor?
tation, without overhauling or breaking bulk,
via Montreal. *
The New Departure.
The Wisconsin Democracy, with Senator
James B. Doolittle as their candidate for
Governor, have taken the field on the " new
departure." They say: "That as the late
" amendments to the constitution have been
" declared by the properly constituted au
" thorities to be part of the'*4bndamental
" law of the land, they are bin di cg on the
" people," and that " the Democratic party
"are opposed to the withdrawal of civil
" and political rights from any class of the
" people; and that we demand the removal
" of all political disqualifications."
This adds another to the long roll of States
which agree to accept the inevitable, icm
their backs upon the bad past, and make
the best of the situation.
Charge, Cheater, Charge !
The Chester Reporter has several stand?
ing grievances; the principal being the
comments of the Charleston press upon the j
new Blue Ridge Syndicate, and our failure
to reproduce the Reporter's denunciations
of "the old fogyism for which Charleston is
" proverbial."
With regard to the Blue Bidge Railroad,
it is sufficient to Bay that we have given
both attack and defence-the report of |
Messrs. Porter & Conner, and the semi-offi?
cial explanations of the Syndicate. And we
see no reason, as yet, to modify our opin?
ions, or to approve, in advance, of a trans?
action which takes the control of the Blue
Ridge Railroad ont of the hands of tbe
State, upon terms which are known only to
those who are partners, in the speculation.
But we are no less anxious than the Re?
porter to witness the speedy completion of |
the Blue Ridge line; and that Charleston is
deeply interested, is proved by the magni?
tude of her money subscriptions to the
stock of the company. Every tax receipt is
an nnpleasant reminder of the millions
which Charleston has spent in the vaiu en?
deavor to secure direct communication with
the West. This city, however, cannot do
impossibilities, and may be unable to con?
vince the Reporter that we are striving bard
to open new channels of trade, ns well as to
retain what business we possess.
The matter of close connections with the
Charlotte Road was referred to the vice
President of the Sooth Carolina Railroad, '?
whose explanations were printed in these [1
columns some days ago. Can the Reporter
suggest any new complaint upon this branch
of; the Bubject ?
We do not pretend to say that the mer?
chants and business men of Charleston are
absolutely without fault. To an outsider it J
would seem that some of them might dis?
play, with benefit tc themselves, more dash
and fire, and a more progressive spirit. But
they have had a hard battle with fortune
these six years, and we are disposed to en?
courage them, and cheer them on, instead
of joining, as the Reporter would do, in a
chorus of angry criticism. After nil, onr
contemporary, we suppose, has the good of
Charleston at heart. Should it spare the
rod-in its own opinion-it might spoil the
city! -
Popular Kducatlon.
The Cheraw Bemocrat urges the voters of j
its school district to levy an additional
school-tax, so as to secure, beyond all doubt,
the quota granted by the State. This addi?
tional tax must, of necessity, be very small,
bul it will serve to show that the people are
ready to do what they can in furtherance of j
the cause of education. We are glad to
learn that it is the intention of the trastees
for Cheraw to establish two 'schools, one for
the colored children and one for the white
children. t
That " Prospect ?ve Carse.'"
We notice that the Edgefield Advertiser,
in a recent issue, speaks of Cumulative,
voting as "that prospective curse for South
" Carolina." These are strong words, and,
as we are convinced that a representation of
minorities (such as is secured by Cnmnlative
voting) is indispensable to the maintenance
of free institutions, we should like to hear
the reasons which have led the Advertiser
to condemn a plan which, in substance, has
received the, approval of the most enlight?
ened statesmen of the day.
Nominations by Buyout t.
[From the Nation ]
Suppose Warmouth and his Republicans in
New Orleans had been men ot nerve enough
to attempt the enforcement ol their right to
seats in the State Republican Convention, and
the State Governor had been shot down by
United Si ates troops surrounding the conven?
tion, not in obedience to the requisition of the
Governor, but of the United States Marshal,
who wishes to be nominated as governor, and
at the instance of the United States Collector,
who wishes to be a senator, could the Presi?
dent in that case have withstood the demand
for the punishment of those officials by re- j
moral ? He bas most certainly not acted with
sufficient promptness for the country's good,
or the party's, or his own In this business; and
in case he should not act at all, his offence
must surely be recollected against him. That
"he means no harm" In no way relieves a
maker of legal precedents against the free?
dom of a country; and nothing better than
that ls said for General Grant, while worse
things are said in plenty, and not without
color of truth.
