The proprietor was on ttaaratop, aowqvar, %nd.
as Sam was gathering trie content8*of the money

.THE OLD CUSTOMHOUSE.-The sudden stop
ling of work qa this venerable old edinue has
riven rise to so many surmises and rumors as to
he cause, that we are glad to be able at last to
nform our readers of the true solution of the
nystery. The work was stopped simply because
he government waa 'not ready to proceed with
t. It will probably be remembered that, In the
sst allusion to the building In THE NEWS, lt was
here stated that the partitiqnahad been knocked
lown, and the whele of the 'interior was one
rast ball. The agent and workmen were ready
? proceed, but the next step was rebuilding the
nterlor, and the proper plans for the ar?
rangements of. the rooms and offices
lad not been determined upon by the
ihthoritles at Washington. On this account
the work was stopped, and that gloomy silence
jnsued which has been the source of so much
laxlety and curiosity on the part of those Inter?
ested in the matter. An absurd rnmor to the
iffect that the walls had been condemned as un
safe was ana is entirely without foundation,
r?e bricks are as good as on the day they were
Imported, and the Walls are -erected in the sob
sitantlal manner of the olden time, with powerful
arched foundations which bid fair to last-for cen?
turies.
The plans for the fliting up of the Interior ure
even now in Washington, and the work on the
building will be-rsumed^s soon aa they return
approved. They are expected in a few days.

much more welcome.
THE SABBATH-Sunday was a day ot re
mflrkable quiet, and all classes and conditions
seemed to have sunk into a state of peaceful rest.
The guardians of the public peace paraded their
beaja with pe feet serenity, in their cerulean uni?
forms, ead no noisy drunk, no suspicious tramp,
and no disorderly crowd could be discovered
throughout 'the city. The bad characters were
ofltsomewhere boating, bathing, or In the fields,
and the policemen- were undisturbed. Not a
slngle'csse of any kind whatsoever was entered
on -the Mayor's book. His judicial dulles were
correspondingly light, and all were pleased, not
excepting the reporter, with th?'quiet and good
order which reigned supreme on the Sabbath.
