At the conclusion of the services a collec? tion was taken cp for the benefit or the church, and the assembly soon dispersed. . CHARLESTON CITY MISSION, {EPISCOPAL.) From the "Monthly Record," the organ ol the ^Protestant Episcopal Church in this State, we learn that, in addition to the missionary services of Rev. Alexander W. Marshall, D. D., at st. John'a,- Hampstead, and of the Rev. W. "H. Hauckel, at St. Stephen's, Anson street, the Rev. J Mercier Green has been appointed a mission? ary '-without any parochial ties or responsibili? ties for the fl ld at large embraced in the city limits, to assist the missionary at St. John's in visiting the hospitals and Jails, and the highways and byways," Ac. THE BASE BALL MATCH.-A large number of p.-rsons assembled at the Citadel Green on Saturday afternoon to witness the proposed match between the Schachte and Grey Socks Clu'is, and the lovers of this healthy sport had the pleasure of witnessing ah exciting contest. The competitors were well matched, but want or practice wai shown lu the manoeuvring and play? ing ol both. After a gallant Btruggle the Schachtes gave in, and, when it wa? nearly dark, the victory was declared for the Grey Socks by a score of 22 to 15. PIONEER EXCURSION.-This fine company, with a large number or Invited guests, enjoyed a mi n'.:ght excursion en Friday evening that proved all the projectors desired. Though the weather had been somewhat unpropitious during th? day. by nightfall U was quite clear, and the moon filled her part tn the programme of the eveniug's amus-m nt. 'Beck's band discoursed fine music, and the alluring danoe drew many votaries. Brookbanks furnished more snbstantlal refreshments, and lt-was long '?ayont the twa" ere ths revellers were landed at the wharf. The evening was fraught with pleasure to all concern? ed, and Captain D. Sinclair, Jr., of the St Helena, by tils courtesy and attention, added to the en? joyment ot the excursionists. There are some prizes still on hand, as also many arti? cles, which can be used on the next Fest, so that the net result of the recent festival may be put down at $20o0. The treasurer's report shows the total receipts for the yearjtnding June 1,1871, to have been S65?#1S, whtch, In addition to $2719 31 lu hand ou the 1st of June, 1870, makes a total of $9287 49 lo be accounted for. The total expenses during the year were $7587 37, leaving a balance in the hands of the treasurer of $1700 12. Included among tiie expenditures ls the taking up of a bond of $2000, with $140 interest, also $350 for a "carous>el," and $225 for enlarging the well on the Schutzennlatz. THE DROWNED MAN_Th? inquest over the body of the man washed ashore on Goat Island, was continued, Saturday, on Sullivan's Islan d, with out aar material developments. Ellen Butterfield, arrested on the charge of stealing $30 in greenbacks, was examined and gave 3ond to appear for trial at the Court or Gen? eral Sessions. Jacob Singleton, lodged on the charge ol steal? ing cigars, is held ror examination. James Farrell, arrested for being drunk, and using insulting language to Robert White In Meet lng street, was sentenced to'pay a fine of $5. or go to the House of Correction for five days. * A colored youth, arrested at 1 o'clock Saturday morn ng, while lying around Market street near Meeting, in a highly demoralized condition, was discharged on the plea of the first o ne'ice, and on nhl promising to turn over a new leif. A TICKET-OF-LEAVE-MAN.-James Parker, a colored man, who had been employed at the Mills Hous<> for about eight days, was arrested yesterday at the Eight-mile pump, on the Northeastern Rail? road, charged with stealing over $300 worth of tickets from the ticket agency at the M?]?J House. Tbeson of Mr. A. Butterfield lost the key to the safe containing the tickets, on Wednesday last, and the safe was removed a few days afterwards op to the Charleston Hotel for the purpose af opening it. Saturday morning one or the clerks at the Mills Bouse, while setting lu the porch in the Inner quadrangle or the note), struck a rat which fell through the grating above the cellar Just at the back door, leading into the quadrangle. A servant went into the cel. lar, and on looking under the grating found not the rat, but the lost key] Upon open* lng the safe forthwith, railroad tickets, principally through tickets to New Tork, to the value of ?300 and ever, were found missing. The numbers of these tickets were at once telegraphed to the varions stations on the roads which they repre? sente!. The first of the stolen tickets was recog? nized by the conductor on the day train of the Northeastern Railroad, as he went his round, and Officer Nlpson being in walting on the train, the man who had presented the ticket was arrested at the Eight-mile pump and brought back to the city. He rr43 identified as Jim Parker, the Mills Hons: servant, and the robbery was at once made clear. Jim ls a sharp fellow, and had duty Stamped his ticket-a through one to New York with the agent's patent stamp. He had not hit the right places, but stamped lt seventeen times insteid of twelve. None of the other tickets were round on his person, or have been recovered yet. He is held for examination. TiROET PftACTfCE OF THE CHARLESTON RIFLEMEN.-Thl- fine corps of riflemen took the Mount Pleasant Ferry boat at 3 o'clock on Satur? day afternoon, and, after a pleasant trip, spent an exciting tim", until dark, la contests of skill at target shooting. The club, generally, ls armed with the Remington rifle, but several other patents were present which had a decided ad? vantage over the former In precise shooting. Tho target was placed at the point blank range of one hundred yards, and the following was the result of the shooting : FOR BEST AVERAGE SHOTS. First prize, a silver meda!-Lieutenant John A. Moroso. Se:ond prize, a stiver medal-Charles Selg nious. Third prize, a silver plated cup-Henry Mabu.-. Fcurth prize, for the worst average shots, a Un medal-D. Mustard. S-veral pools were then made up for the best single shots, of which the first was won by A. Roe necke, the second by A. M. Williams, and tbe third by T. M. O'Neill. Lastly, the pool tor the greatest number or bull's eyes was won by Lieu? tenant John A. Moroso. The prizes, were theA awarded th the winners by captain A. J. Mims, with remarks appropriate to the occasion, and the excursionists returned to tne city by the last ferry boat at a late hour of .he eveuing. This artair was so pleasant, and has given to much satisfaction to the members of the club, that they ipropoa? to indulge in these tar j-et shootings every Saturday afternoon du ring the summer. THE TAWL BOAT RACE.- Tuward3 6 o'clock on Saturday afternoon the Battery alon? by the Bathing House was thronged with an excited eroivd, who had gathered to witness this attrac tive scene. The ladies were out-ln large -.tumbers, and bright eyes watched the two contesting boats as they came out, ana took their positions at ?he distant starting polut. The Bathing House, affording an admirable view, was quickly crowd - tr*, both on the roof and ou its pleasant piazza. The yacht Louly anchored out in the stream, abreast oribis point, with Mr. Louis Z>. DeSaus sore, the Judge or the race, on board. The boats were aligned by the starting Judge with the buoy, and at the crack of a pistol the oars upon e ich simultaneously caught the water. The tw.> were we.l matched, and stuck close together throughout the wee. A close observer could see, however, that the Alerts had the advantage in the stesdy, even sweep of their oars. The Carrie had the dash, but, as she passed her antagonist, the splash or her oars marked the excitement which pervaded her crew. The latter pulled well, but when the closing tug came, they were unable to quicken their stroke. On the last quarter the steady strokes of the Alert was perceptibly quickened, and forging ahead or her antagonist, Bbs wou, with apparent ease, b/ a length and a quar.er. making the mile In three minutes and fltty-five seconds. The Carrie made a gallant struggle, but had nothing in reserve. Her time was four minutes The victors were hailed with cheers, and the waving kerchiefs, of their femi? nine favorers. Another race ls proposed for Satur? day next, over the same ground, .between the Carrie and two new competitors, the Fannie aud Azalea. Another exciting contest may bi ex? pected.
