FIRST SHIPMENT OF PEACHES.-Messrs.
Kiusmau A Howell shipped yesterday, by the
steamer Charleston, the first peaches of the sea
sou. They were grown by Mr. J. G. Smith, or
Winlaton, and are, we trust, the forerunners of a

Pioneer Steam Fire Engine Company, at their
meeting on Tuesday evening, were made the
8u">;ect of a pleasant surprise, by having a very
floe large china punch bawl presented to
them by their president, Augustine T. Smythe,
Esq., who also gave a handsome treat in the form
cr a collation, prepare?! by Tully. The members
and invited guests enjoyed the extempore feast,
and the best of good feeling prevailed In the
speeches, toasts, Ac, that were profusely made.

EX-PRESIDENT DAVIS'S VISIT TO COLOMBIA. -
The Columbia Phoenix of yesterday says: '*A
number of our citizens were present yesterday, at
the Charlotte depot, to greet ex-President Davis
upou bis visit to this city. Upon the arrival of
the train, Mr. Davis, acco.mpaaled by General
Bu'ler. appeared and met with a quiet bnt warm
and earnest reception. Mr. Davis appears lu
good health and fine spirits. We learn that he Is
here on business connected with the Carolina
Life IuBuranee Company, of which he is president
and General .Sutler the agent ror this State. Ex
Presldeut Davis is the guest of our townsman,
Major John Preston. Mr. Davis leaves Columbia

wharf gave additional liveliness to the scene.
Over 3600 packages of new vegetables form part or
this freight list, and one hundred voyageurs Oiled
the cabins.
Tlie iron steamship Georgia will be the next de?
parture on the "Iron Line,'' and her great car- ,

THE SAVANNAH CATSUURAL FAIR.-The
Savannah advertiser says: "Right Rev. Igna
tius P?rsico, Catholic bishop of thia diocese, bas
already received $12,106 31. proceeds of. the rc
cent fair held in this city for the purpose of rais?
ing funds for the buUding of a cathedral. This
is by far the largest sum ever raised ia this city
at any one time by a fair."

THE PICNICS.-The. delightful weather ol
yesterday was the best that ?contd have been se?
lected for tte outdoor recreation of a picnic, and
the two entertainments or this sort, which were
expected, came dnly off. The Germania Bund at
Mount Pleasant, and La Caudenr Lodge, with
their visitors, at the Schutzeaplatz, spent a merry
day, and th s several festivities were prolonged
antila late hour in the evening.
BEFORE THE TRIAL JCSTICES.-Dick Fick

dollars from a lady, who bad been driven down

twenty days.
Mary Goddln was convicted cf pommelling Jane
Miller at the house of the latter, In Chalmers
street, and being noted for her pugnacious pro?
clivity, wa; sentenced by Ja3tlce Brennan to pay
a One or $3 and costs, or go to jail for ten days.
Stephen .Tones, who sold three cartloads of wood

by being sent to fall for ten days by Trial Justice

RADICAL WARD MJSETINGS_Meetings were
lieid last evening tn the various warda ot tue city
by the Radical party, for the purpose of electing
six delegates from each ward to a c nvention, to
bs held early in June, when a central executive
committee will be elected to direct and manage
the interests of the party in the coming municipal
campaign.'
Ox A VISIT TO IRELAND.- Alderman James
F. Greene left the city last night, by the North?
eastern Railroad, for New York, wh?nce he will
proceed, by. steamship, to Ireland. He emigra?
ted to this country from Rosscommon, Ireland,
about twenty-one years ago, and has always re?
sided South. During the late war he was attached
to thc Confederate Navy, and at the last munici?
pal clectlou was chosen alderman from Ward l on
the Radical ticket. At the last meeting of City
Cour*!' leave of absence was granted him for
two months for the purpose of visiting his aged
mother. Mr. Greene ls a favorable specimen cf
the present municipal board, and bis voice and
influence will be much missed during the short
period still left to-that peculiar body-for directing
the affairs of Charleston.
GALLANTRY REWARDED.-The steamship
Virginia, of the Philadelphia and Charleston Line,
Hunter, commander, waa boarded at 8 o'clock last
night by the following named officers of the Balti?
more and Charleston Steamship ?Sea Gull : A. L.
Foote, chief engineer; W. Auld, first assistant en?
gineer; E. Calder, second assistant engineer: J.
P..Foote, first officer; S. Hughes, second officer;
and N. Fitzpatrick, purser. Though this deed
was done at dead of night, we think we shan be
able to show presently that there was no hostile
intent. The object of the visit was to present
Cap ala Hunter with a handsome gold-headed
cane, in acknowledgment of the valuable ser-'
vices he rendered the Sea OuU, on the 21st
day of January last. On that- day, some of j
onr readers may remember, the Sea Gull soon
after leaving Baltimore on her trip to Charleston,
collided with a schooner, the accident staving in
the bows of Che steamer. Being in danger of j
sinking, the captain was obliged to put the ship
before the wind. The weather, too, was very
rough, and it is hard to say what might have,
happened hal not the steamship Virginia come
up in the very, nick of time. She overtook the
Sea Guif off Cape Lookout, and gave her convoy
through the storm, accompanying her all the way
to this port.
The head of the cane bore the .inscription, "Pre?
sented to Captain Hunter, of the steamship Vir?
ginia, by the officers or the steamship Sea Gell,
May 24 1871." . ?
Mr. Fitzpatrick presented the cane on the part
of his relio w-offlcers, and in reeling terms spoke
or the perilous and exciting scene at sea that
save rise to the present meeting, and gave ex?
pression to the feeling of high esteem entertained
tty the officers of the Sea Gull for Captain Hunter,
md his gallant and seamamlike Conducton that
ocasi?n. .
In conclusion, Mr. Fitzpatrick begged Captain
Sunter to gratify them by accepting, in token of
;helr esteem, this modest offering, and presented
the cane.
Captain Hunter was comp'etely taken by sur
irise, and, with signal emotion, replied lu a few
limpie, earnest words, giving expression to his
; fateful feelings, and stating that he would
irize, os long ai life should last, this memento of
LU interesting ooca-ion^. He modestly d?pr?ci?t
id the service he had rendered, saying chat he
vas not conscious or having done more than his
iuty, and thar, he waa ever ready to do-as much
vhen he ha i reason to* believe he could be of ser
tice. The earnestness of Captain Hunter went
mme to ?very heart, and all felt thar the present

endered.
