AUCTION AT WHiu>ES's,-The nightly auc?
tion? at Wniluen'9 Zing street store were re?
sumed last utglit, aha auctioneer Bruns, in his
usual brisk style, disposed of a Urge number or
useful and ornamental articles. The crowd was
not as large as usual, and, in consequence, tbe
goods were sold for almost nothing, and many
rejoiced in bargains. The sales will be continued
to-night, and every night hereafter until the en?
tire remaining stock has been disposed or. We
advise all who want bargains to be on hand. We
are requested to say that all patties who have
goods si ll remaining in the store must call and
remove them without delay.
A MURDER AND A MTSTERY.-A brutal mur?
der has beeu committed in the neighborhood ol
the Sixty-nine mite post on .the South carolina
Kattroad, beyond the Edls'.o River. A young
mulatto named Ashley F. Carroll, a resilient or
Charleston, and a bricklayer by trade, who had
gone to Midway to do 6ome mn-onry work, was
found by the roadside qnlte dead, and with the
marks of heavy blows with an Iron bar upon bis
head, fracturing the skull The deceased had
formerly been a member of company K. 135th regi?
ment C. S. C. v. infantry, but was discharged at
Louisville, in October, 1865, as shown by a certifi?
cate which was found upon his person. The mo?
tive of the murder was evidently robbery, as
shown by the rifled trunk of the victim, which
was round near him stripped o? everything of
va:ue. No trace of the murderer has been discov
.ered. _
DEPARTURE OF THE VISITING FIREMEN.
Early yesterday morning, the Phoenix Fire En
gme company repcued to?rthc Charleston Hotel,
and. the Georgians being ready, they all marched
to the .Etna Engine-house. Detachments of the
Phoenix and jEtua here manned the hose reel of
the Metropolitans, and the visitors, escorted by
their hosts, marched to the Savannah and
Charleston Railroad wharf. A short delay before
the steamer left was spent in taking leave of th?
gallant fellows from our sister State, and, as the
steamer moved off from the wharf, three hearty
cheers were given by the escort and their depart?
ing visitors. The Independents, of Columbia,
were also escorted by the Eagle Fire Company to
the depot. The splendid Firemen's Band led the
procession, and doubtless enlivened thc journey
to the capital with many a spirited air. The fare
weU at the depot was honest and true, and, with
three hearty cheers such as firemen only know
how to give, the visitors went on their way. The
vis.ts of these companies frem our sister cities
are among the pleasantest epholes of the grand
firemen's celebration.
