Tua CEO ra.-The weather has been unsettled
during much of the past week, with considerable
rain, and arti te unfavorable for field work, closing
olear and mild. There is some diversity of opinion
in reference to the amount of cotton to be plant
ed the coming spring, and while some sections
win, from necessity, be compelled to pay more at?
tention to provisions, and consequently lessen
the cotton area, others promise to put an average
crop of this article m the ground. The planting
season wi') be watched with more than usual in?
terest, as the country wi lr be thrown on Its own
resources toa greater degree than any year since
the war, and also as' indicating the capacity to
raise the staple at present Agu res.
THE RKCBITTO.-The arrivals at the cotton ports
for the week np to Friday last were large, and
were 161,096 bales against 164,482 bales the week
before, and 98,614 bales for the contrasting period
mst year. At New Orl?ans the receipts were 67,
660 bales, against 61,801 bales the week of the
year, before. The total supplies at the cotton ports
from September l, 1870, up to the latest mali dates
were 2,601,908 bales, and 1,924,486 bales the year
prevlous, showing an increase of 577,423 bales.
The receipts at the chief Southern marketa from
September 1, 1870, np to the latest telegraphic ln
