And the Radicals themselves know it. . The Cost of a. Committee. In March, 1869, the General Assembly ap? pointed a special committee to investigate j the disordered state of affairs in the Third Congressional District, and the causes of I the "intimidation, outrages and murders"! perpetrated duri?g the preceding general election. The committee consisted ol Joseph Crews, chairman, and Messrs.' Wright (col? orad,) Elliott (colored,) .Bryant (white,) Smalls (colored,) and McIntyre (white.):] (They went to .work in May, and presented | > the. result of their labors, last session, in a j work of nearly 800 pages, printed at the ex? pense. ?r the State. AccordiDg to this re-' j port, the last meeting of the committee, to [ take.evidence, was hehl in September, 1869. Ti ?be question[jfto&ff ko. bai retained Dunbar as'attorney, he said he had. The questions' whether Dunbar bf himself had drawn the $7500 he declined to answer. He, also, de? clined to! say! whether the warrant drawn io the order of Mr. Danbar was paid to him. in answer to. another question, Mr. Crews expressed the opinion that the Third Cou-' gressional District Investigating Committee had-riot 'been 'properly disehapgwd-up- to 'th is Time, and had a perfect right to draw on the treasury until properly discharged. ? luis is_ bow the ?ase stands. A s um. of $27,815 45 has been spent, or which $7500 is charged to Mr. Dunbar. This sum, at all events, lise between Mc Crews and Mr. Dun? bar, and 'if the' General Assembly has a shadow of regard, for decency, it will push the investigation.. We should like to know whether the Attorney-General cannot act in this matter. We do not believe that Mr. Dunbar received the money. A Judicial in? vestigation will show who dil '.' '. There is not much room for doubt. The St ato Treasarer shows that $7500 was paid to the order of Mr. Dunbar.. This gentleman majf.es affidavit' that he "never received a "dollar." J.J. Wright, of the committee, says that no attorney, was employed, and Messrs. McIntyre, Smalls and Elliott coo firm the statement.
