How to Live on One Thousand a Year.
A contributor to the Now York Evening Post
tells how a small family may live comfortably
on $1000 a year, and, at the same time- keep a
bank account. He says:
WheB I married I had a salary of $20 per
week. My wife la a neat body, who had, per?
haps Unwisely, consented to take me for bet?
ter or for worse. We engaged two rooms, un?
furnished and only plaster finished, In a new
house just built In Eleventh street, In which
there was a grate, ample closet room and run?
ning water, at $15 per month, (too cheap.)
The cost of papering cheaply was $3; a box to
bold' half a ton ot coal, $3 50: carpets, $51; a
?Ola, bureau, bedstead, small table, three chairs
and bookcase, $94; chlnaware, ?c., $16 25,
and frying* pan, stew pan, boiler and some
little things, $3 80; the bed linen, towels, Aa,
were in the possession of my wife, als?,
some Ht?e trinkets', ornaments and pic?
tures, all of which added to the appear?
ance ot the two rooms without further co.st.

The second year saw us beginning with $128
saved from the salary of $1000 alter expenses
-of clothing, Ac, and only a crib and baby

"dothee, $24 84; and the cost of light and Aire
was $40j some additional furniture, $39; housV
rent. $180, and living expenses, $313 25;

This included clothing, washing and every cent
of expenses paid out during the year, leaving
to the next year's account $664 91, which was
the $138 left over from the last year; and my
employers hearing of the "incidental" addi?
tion advanced my salary to $25 per week for

cured from Interest. Two years and -a lew
mouths have since passed, and the balance In
favor of the rainy day now In the Manhattan
Savings Bank stands $2115 28, upon which they
have just credited me a dividend of seven per
oem. This is the item of living.
The fine arts of cooking, washing the dishes
and aavlng thc doctor's bills,' consists in living
aim ply. buying your provisions fresh and In bul
sin all qu au tl Hes, und neyer spending over three
fourths of an hour in all the preparations and
clearing away of breakfast, dinner and supper.
Were there space, the little deinils of prepar?

that the hundred thousand young women of
this city, walting to be made happy heads of
households, need to be told.
