Mackey was graced yes? terday afternoon by the presence of a massive silver-plated fireman's trumpet, concerning which an interesting case was In process of litigation. The trumpet, which is a one looking; instrument, was presented on the 14th or February, 1870, to Henry Larcoinb, the president of the United Fire Engine Company, and he having since died, an action of trover was now brought against his widow and executrix Tor the possession of the. trumpet, valued at $75, which she had relused to. deliver up. A gre it many of the members or the company who attended the parade at the presen? tation were examined, also the secretary, and the minute book or the Company was produced, all showing that the trumpet had been presented to the president or the dre company, and not to Lar comb personally. The justice, notwithstanding the complaints ol the widow, so decided, and the property was delivered to the United Fire Engine Company. _ WOMEN'S RIGHTS.-Some curious cases are about to come up before the United States District Court, now in Resslon. It seems that Tour women on Lady Island voted as proxies ror their hus bands and sons. In one case the son happened to be under age. Tho ie roar pioneers or women suffrage were arrested by the Bowen party, and arrived here per steamer from Lady I ?land last night. At the election, when the poll was first opened, DeLarge tickets W9re distributed gene, rally to the crowd by Samuel Green, now a mem? ber elect of the General Assembly. At Samuel's suggestion, and with the connivance or his father, who was chairman of the board of managen, these women deposited lu the box the rotes of their relatives, who were absent-perhaps veting somewhere else. The case against them is a plain one, but lt ls doubtful if they will be prosecuted. GLOBS AND STABS.-The Mayor's docket yes? terday morning presented a perfect blank, and the fraternity of vagrants, drunkards, rowdies and thieves seemed to have turned over a new lear urti h the new year. At ihe Detective's office, Sam Middleton, an itinerant bootblack and retail vender of the "Shoo fly" shine, was arrested for making too free with somebody else's, pants, valued at four dollars. He was taken to the office by his captor, Special Officer Johnson, where he awaits aa Inter? view with the Mayor this morning. JoopPrlole iu was also arrested in State street, for assaulting Albert, the well-known young min? strel who perambulates our streets with a crazy harp. Prloleau heard him play and sing Shoo-lly once, and resolving that this lay should be his last, broke the strings of Ute harp. Special Offi? cer Johnson happened to be near, and coming to the rescue of the young minstrel, arrested Prlo? leau, who ls staying at the Detective's office until he has an opportunity of seeing the Mayor. MURDER nv ST. ANDREW'S-VIOTIM UNKNOWN -COBO NB E'S INQUEST.-The body or a colored mau was discovered on Sunday afternoon lying in a ditch reside the Savannah and Charleston Railroad, a few miles from this city. The flesh on the upper part of the body had been devoured by buzaards, making lt impossible to recognize the feature?, but the lower limbs, although putrid, were secured rrom the .voracity or the birds by some pine bark which had been thrown on them. The skull had a deep cavity in lt, and appears to have been crushed In by a blow from some heavy weapon. The affair la a bloody mystery to which there ls as yet no clue. Parties residing tu the neighborhood admit hearing on Christmas Eve cries which seemed to be those or a person In dis? tress, but as these only continued ror a few mo> meats, no particular attention was paid to them. The coroner was notified, and au inquest held yesterday over the body. All efforts to Identify the man were in vain. He was dressed in a dark coat and a pair of grayish pants, and ?ad os a new pair or Congress gaiters, new socks, and a new pair or drawers. A new pair or hame strings and an old plaited hide whip were round close by the place where he was lying. After a short de? liberation, the Jury returned a verdict that the deceased came-to his death from a wound in? flicted on the right side of the head by a heavy weapon In the hand or hands or a party or par? ties to the Jurors unknown. SHOT m AK ATTEMPT TO ESC IFS_Yesterday morning Thomas Singleton was brought before Trial Justice Caulfield, charged with stealing a revolver, of the valse of $12, from Edward Wash? ington. The larceny was clearly proved and ad? mitted by the defendant, who refused to compro? mise the case by returning the stolen revolver. He offered to give Washington his own, however, won h about fifty cents, which the latter declined. Singleton was sentenced to pay a fine of 17 and costs, or go to jail for fifteen days. Not having the money to pay, and positively refusing to re? turn the stolen revolver, he was committed to jail under charge of Constable A. Kenford.. Al starting, he was obstreperous and resisted the ^unstable ror some time. At different points on the road he did the same thing, and at the corner ot Magazine and Mazy ck streets he made a desperate attempt to escape. Rushing upon his conductor, he knocked hfm down a.td grappled with him, attempting apparently to get possession or the latter's revolver. The constable, however, was too quick, and drawing tho revolv? er ?ie shot the prisoner In the leg. Policeman Goulden now came up, and with hin asuistaaco Benrord succeeded in carrying the woundr sd prisoner to the Jail. He waa placed In the hospital department, where hts wound was dressed by the jail physician. Tue ball had penetrated the fleshy part of thu thigh, without touching the bone. All efforts to extricate it were useless, and lt now remains deeply imbedded in the wound. The wound, how? ever, is by no means a dangerous one. A KNOTTY CASE.-Cypress Nelson wis arrest? ed yesterday morning on a warrant issued by Tnal Justice J. G. Mackey, charged with an as? sault and battery with Intent to kill and a rob? bet y upon Henry Dart. From the affidavit of the latter, itseems that he was quietly sleeping at his house, Ko. 25 America street, when Nelson enter? ed his chamber about one o'clock New Year's morning ana awoke him by striking him on the hoad with a stick. He had a gold watch and chain lu a pocket which Nelson then grabbed at and got possession of. Dart was now wide awake, and,.grappling with the robber, recovered his property. Thc latter now tried to make his escape, followed closely by Dart, who. on reach? ing the yard, was knocked down by Nelson with a stick which he held in his hand. While on the ground Dart's watch and chain were again grabbed by the spoiler, who this time effected his escape with the booty. Dart Immediately went to the Upper Guardhouse and reported the matter. Returning to his house, he was again assaulted by Nelson with a large knife, and this time Dart took to his heels in carnes'. Proving the faster or the two, he reached a large brick pile, and seising a largo brick, confronted his pursuer. Nelson turned and fled, and led his pursuer a lively race to tito corner or Mary and Elizabeth s'reels. He was here caught and ar? ro ted by a policeman, who took from bim the knife and the remaining portion of the stlok which had been broken lu the combat. Tho examination comes off to-day, and as no third party was present during the fight, the Justices will have a nice time reconciling the op? posing statements. COLI? Would you be kind enough to draw the attention or the pabilo to this fact, vis: that the children of the sehools are obliged to be out in the play ground during recess, whether it rains or shines., ls cold or nott Even In severe weather like what we have experienced the last week or two, they are not allowed to have on any extra covering while in school, and the teachers are not allowed that privilege either. In these hard times everybody has not very warm dresses to wear, and] aa they are not allowed to wear any extra wrap, visitors to the schools have all taken notice or ihe pinched blue look teachers and pupils have, os they are not allowed to go near the stoves, lt ls not to be wondered at that some or the best teachers leave, when we consider that they have to walk in tbe play-ground even when it ls pouring rain. The teachers and oh.ldren are hardly ever without colds.
