CoLLisrox.-Two freight trains on the South Carohna Railroad came la collision yesterday morning, abont half-past 7 o'clock. Both engines were somewhat damaged, bat no injury was done to human life or to the freight. The accident occurred at Cypress Swamp, about twenty-eight miles from Charleston. Meyer, tiler: COTTON* BURNED.-On the night of the 25th instant three cars, containing about one hundred and fifty bales of cottou,*were burned al Belton, on the Greenville and Columbia Railroad. The cotton was owned by parties in Anderson, S. C., and we arr pleased to lear.') that they will not suffer by-.he are, as the road has an open policy which will cover their loss. Tlie temperature, however, ls still mild, and we hope that westerly,breezes wlU soon bring with them balmy sunshine ami settled weather. STEAMSHIP BURNED AT SEA.-The Wilming? ton (N. C.) Star, of yesterday, says: "A dispatch was received in this city yesterday by Mr. Old, agent of the Lonnard Steamship Linc, from Mr. }j. Lorillard, New. York, proprietor of the hue, stating that the steamship -Fairbanks, bound from Wilmington to New York, Hail been burned at sea. The dispatch further stated that all hands were saved, but makes no mention of the precise time of the disaster no;* where lt occurred. The Fairbanks cleared from Wilmington on the 10th, under command of Captain Howes, and her car? go consisted of ninety-four casks of spirits ter? pentine, three hundred and ninety one barrels of rosin, four hundred and eighty-six bales of cot? ton, eight hundred and twenty-two bushels of peanuts, thlrty-one packages of dried fruit and eight packages of merchandise." THE WEED.-The office of the Uniter! States Commissioner yesterday presented somewhat cf the appearance of a large wholesale tobacco store, nameruns packages of the mach-abused and mnch-loved weed being piled up along the walls. Forty-four of the boxes had been seized in this etty at the Instance of Mr. Clontman, collector of internal revenue on achargeof not being proper? ly stamped. Those boxes were neatly fixed up, and all marked in large letters "Smoking tobac? co-tax paid-stamps within." From their weight and solid packing Uncle Sam claims that they contain chewing tobacco. The difference is a alight ene. and consists lu the fact thu chewing tobacco ought to be stamped at the ra?e of 32 cents to the podad, while smoking is allowed to go with a label indicating 16 cents per pound. Thia tobacco Is wrapped tn paper and stamped as smoking tobacco, but the otucers say that on opening lt, it was found to bo s lid, first-rate chewing tobacco. The matter is the hands of the lawyers, and promises, at arl events, not to end in s jgJke. . ._ _ FUNERAL OP JAMES W. GRAT, ESQ.-The funeral obsequies of this distinguished citizen were performed yesterday afbirnoon, at half-past 1 o'clock, at the Unitarian Church. A large num? ber of the members of the bar and-maoyof the leading merchants of Charleston assembled to pay tribute to the memory of the deceased, and to those manly virtues which for fifty years or more of activo life in onr midst have endeared him to thia community. The services were re sd ky the Rev. Mr Yates, and an eloquent prayer delivered by Rev. Mr. Cutler, the pastor of the church. In his comments upon thc character Of Mr. Gray, Mr, Yates said that language w,as unnecessary to add to the silent hat all powerful example contained In the coffin about to be interred. Few purer men ever lived. His high, public character, his person? al worth, his* private virtues as a son, a brother and father, and above all, his touching love for attie children-a sign of his young heart, which be retained catii Jae hoar of his death-testified of a nature. Elizabeth Bayer was arrested yesterday morn nlng nnder a warrant from Trial Justice J. O. Mackey, charged with a breach of the peace in assaulting a little girl. The plea was necessary chastisement, but her right to administer this not being fully established, she was bound over to I < keep the peace. | < John Williams was arrested yesterday afternoon ' by Lieutenant Phlilippy and Officer Lovett,chargcd with being a confederate of Freeman, in the late robbery on board of the steamer Baillie. A tab of mackerel, part of the goods lost, was recovered at the same time.
