Our advices by. telegraph from Richmond
bring Intelligence that Mr. Lleb, of Tampa, Flor?
ida, Messrs. George and Andrews, of Syracuse,
Kew York, and Bernstein, or Washington, reported
missing, are safe. Wilcox, of Lynchburg, and
. Vaden, of Chesterfield, are safe. Holmau, of
Jackson. Tennessee, ls known to.be lost, making
the eighth victim. Jive are still missing, of
whom there are ?ttle hopes.
The Richmond Dispatch of Monday brings us
the following details of the catastrophe :
On the morning of Christmas day, at aoout 2
o'clock, Patries Byrd, thc night-watchman at the
Spotswood Hote', was sent by Mr. Knowles, the
night clerk, to call the women, whose duty it la to,
scour thc floors. Going up stairs, be thought be
detected the smell of smoke, and looking more
carefully, presently he saw it curung from a fis?
sure m the weather-boarding of the old wine
room, of late used os a pantry. The alarm was
Imm?diat el? given, and Mr. Knowles and Dr.
Latham, of Lynchburg, running to the spot, tried
to get m the room to extinguish the fire, but
found it impossible to>gct m without a key. Pres?
ently, however, the door was broken down, and
the flames were seen crawling up the walla and
licking the celling with their fiery tongues, lt
was too lute for buckets of water, and a messen?
ger was seat to sound the Dre alarm. Meantime
the cry of Ore was rahed In the house, and the
halls of t he second floor were'In a few minutes
filled with frightened, stupefied, half-clad people,
throwing open the doors, and otherwise dealing
the path of the fiery element.
THK BUILDING IN FLAKES.
Thone who escaped say that in a space of time

made so speedily available. In less than half an
hour Arc was observed on every one of the flv
floors, and the passages were choking with ha' air
and almost impalpable ashes. The scene was now

children were li the burning building, and
all who were awake wero striving to get out.
With fire on every side and smoke-blinding, suf?
focating smoke-penetrating everywhere this
was no easy task to those not thotoughly ac?
quainted with the landmarks. Tne screams and
prayers of tte panic-struck terrified the eelr pos?
sessed; the weak were either trampled under foot
* on the narrow starrs or sank where they stood

y, however, there were those within who retain?
ed their presence of mind, and those without
bold enough toi bk : he danger to save ahuman
life. So far as is known, all who left thefr^-ooms
' found means to escape, though with Ufe alone;
and there was no woman's cry for help, or In?
fant's wall of terror, that did not hiing aman to
the relief. Most of those who lest their lives were
awaked by finning the flames In their rooms, or
remained In the win hope of saving also their
property. The floors bogan to fall, and all in the
building then could not but perish.
rROGBESS OF TUE FIRE.
? A strong wind swept the flames westward, and
the sparks and ashes flew all over the city, cab?
ing t-erlouB apprehensions lest there should bc
fire in remote places, while the services or the
firemen were needed where they were. After the
Spotswood, the adjoining building, occupied bv
the Grover & Baker sewing machine depot, ?.
Currant's house-furnishing store, and Mr. Run?
ge rh rd's banking establishment, caught and was
speedily destroyed. Wolldecke's cigar store and
Anderson's tin and stove depot were thea fired,
and only the constant play or the engines upon
the building on the corner or Malu uni Kin th
streets, known as Bosher's Hall, and under which
was the grocery and liquor store or W. D. Blair A
Co., saved it from following snit. On Eighth
street the old framed building in the rear of the
Spo s wood, and belonging to the concern, was
partially destroyed. At 6 o'clock the Ore was
stayed. .
INCIDENTS.
On the fifth floor there were more children than
ta any other part of the hotel, and it seems almost
miraculous that any of these escaped, when
strong men like Robinson. Hines and Ross perish?
ed. Here were the families of the proprietors.

Mr. A. c. Schaffer, of Lynchburg, superinten?
dent of public priming, had a narrow escane. He
heard ihc roar or the advancing flames, and first
thought lt the noise of a Chrisimus fiolic; but
presently, smelling Are and hearing an alarm,
?pened the door to see the passage full or smoke.
Realizing that bis retreat by thc ordinary avenue

the window, some in thc crowd urged him to

and other cities, the only employees awake at 9
