CHT AFFAIRS.
LOOK OUT FOB THE cmcKNs.-Not content
-*lth tte nightly invasion or the henroosts, anew
?mode o? effecting their purpose iB now made use
o? by sharp young poultry thieves In the broad
light of day. Yesterday a gentleman saw a young
negro urchin come into his yard, and leavlug the
gate open, commence deliberately to drive his
chic*ens into the street. A shout set the young
scapegrace off in rapid flight, and upon being
pursued and caught, begged lustily for mercy,
saying lt was not bim. Thc attempt ls so open
and barefaced, that In niue cases out of ten the
leathered inhabitants of the yard are driven Into
the street and there run down at leisure by these
young desperadoes. Christmas tunes, and the
consequent high price of poultry, emboldens
them, and a sharp watch alone will frustrate their
Attempts._ .
A SHARP SPECULATOR.-A family residing at
Conrdin's Station, on the Northeastern Rai!road,
were surprised by a visit from one Augustus Carr,
who called himself a constable anti stated that
he came to collect money for the liberation or a
Member of the family, who was serving out a
term in jail The kindhearted stranger was re?
ceived with all giadness, and by thc most strenu?
ous efforts of the house Ave hundred pounds of
cotton were scraped together, and the sum of $5
in.money raised, both of which were placed In
the hands of the promised liberator. Carr was
subsequently arrested under warrant from Trial
Justice Magrath, for swindling, and was proved
to have an alias, "Greene,"'and to be an ou offen?
der and a notorious sharper. Fortuna ieiy, he had
not yet disposed of the cotton, which ras return?
ed to the owners. He himself was sent to ?ai!,
where he now remains in default of $1000 bai:.
A few days ago Carr was sent to jail cn a charge
of stealing $J0O, and had only been liberated by
producing the necessary ball.
THIBV?S GOING TO LAW.-A lew ?lays ago
Thomas Prvcnt, who has lately arrived here from
Bichmond, deposited the sum of $050 with Fran?
cis Jenkins fer safekeeptng. The latter keeps a
cookshop at the corner of Bast Bay and Market
? streets, which is said, arnonp those who know, to
ne a general receptacle and deposit for plunder
acquired by a gang of thieves infesting our city.
Jenkins subsequently refused to deliver the money
up to bis bailor on demand, who forthwith insti?
tuted a suit against him for breach of trust and
grand larcency before Trial Justice Magrath, lc
default of bau, Jenkins was locked up in jan, ar.d
te has now employed a lawyer to get him out.
Bryant has likewise retained counsel, and is In
jail also. He says that he obtained this money in
Richmond, where hts share of the plunder, on the
division among his gang, who robbed the Bank 01
Richmond o? {26,000, was $1000. Of this he spent
$30 on his passage hither, and $20 subsequently in
the city. Be has two witnesses likewise in jail
who can prove tte fact that he deposited thc $950
with Jenkins, watch the latter denies.. A habeas1
corpus has been issued to bring Jenkins before
two other trial justices fox the purpose 01' : educ?
ing the ball, which ls now flied at fisoo. The
sheriff claims all the time allowed him, and no re?
turn wm he made until to morrow.
CRUMBS.-Julius1 C. Carpenter, Esq., thc re?
gistrar in bankruptcy, has received permission
from his Honor Judge Bryon to be absent from
the city until the 10th of January next, until
which Urne all cases before him will be con?
tinued.
The bojB have already begun to celebrate -ho
Christmas holidays by firing crackers and torpe?
does along the streets.
By the Mayor's proclamation, pyrotechnic
amusements of this kind must be confined to the
White Point Garden, Hampstead Mai.', Gadsden
street, the west end of Broad street, and private
yards.
.Many parties took advantage of the fine weather
yesterday to indulge their passion for shooting
anfl hunting, for which the abundant game with?
in a few miles cf the city oilers every tempta?
tion.
One of tte famous ' Six Hundred, 'who rode
Into "the jaws of death," with cannon to thc
right of them and cannon to the left of them, (vide
Tennyson,) during the Crimean war, ls a Cnitea
States official in Charleston.
The Gilfort Brothers did not perform yesterday
and their rope was taken down. The fool-bard:
ness exhibited by people who tempt Providence
xo break their necks, receive little sympathy here
at least, and we are happily relieved from thc
probability of writing a touching obituary notice.
SPECIAL MEETING OK CITY COUNCIL.-Pur?
suant to a previous resolution, a special meeting
of Council was called by the Mayor las: evening
at the usual hour. Present, the Mayor, and Al?
dermen Potter, Cunningham, Holloway. Voigt.

On motion of Alderman Collins, the bill to regu?

the blU for 1870, was taken up and read the sec?

. Several sections were read, a'Vi, after eliciting
much discussion, were passed with various
amendments to the curd reading.
On the reading of the Mh section, a motion was
made to adjourn and give :!:? AjdMfianftime :o

In the discession which ensued, thc Council
found themselves without a quorum, and were
about to break up, when the quorum was restored
