ALL ABOUT THE STATE.
Painful Accident.
The little son of Mr. W. Joel Smith, ot Laurens,
had both his hands taken off by agin a f*jw days
880 - Death.
Mr. Allen Barksdale, one or the most aged and
estimable citizens of Laurens, died on the Tin,
aged 87. He was often honored with the trusts ot
the people, and was sheriff of the district, ?epre
sented the people for several terms in the Legis?
lature, and was commissioner of public building-,
for almost half a eehwry.
Fire In lexington.
A Are occurred last Tuesday night on the pre?
mises known as the "Samuel Wlngard place,' on
Fourteen-mile Creek, about two miles from town.
The flames spread to all. the adjacent wooden
buildings on the premises and t -tally consumed
the same. The houses were occupied by colored
people.
Sudden Dentil.
On last Thursday, while Mrs. Maria O'&eall.
oLGreenville, was engaged in removine some arti?
cles, she fell suddenly to the floor, and died almost
Instantly. She had been subject for a long time
to disease or the hean, and it is presumed that
her death arose from this cause. She was the
. mettler of the lat e Major Charlas C. O'Neall, or the
16th regiment. S. C. V., whorell gallantly on the
field or battle.
Distressing Occurrence.
We regret to leam that the dwelling or Mr.
Franklin Hancock, In Chesterfleld County, near
Bornsboro', was burned on Saturday la3t, and
that his youngist chtld, about two years or age,
perished in the flames. We learn that Mr. Han?
cock lost his entire stock or provisions, rurnlture.
clothing, 4c. The -fire ls supposed to have been
accidental; both the parents were absent at a.
neighbor's, and only their two children (one two
and the other six years old) were on the premises.
Assistance arrived too late to save the yonogoot
child or any or the rurnlture. The eldest child
was unable to give any account of the origin of
fte ire.
An Outrage.
The Carolina Spartan says: "On Sunday night,
the 27th ultimo, a party or disguised persons went
to the house or one Ferry Price, in this county ,seiz- j
" ed blindfolded and i-arried him off some distance,
and inflicted upon him a most cruel and brutal
troting. Opon information of the facts, Triai
Justice Fleming, with three discreet and prudent
cltlzeps or our town, went to Price's house to in?
vestigate the matter. They found abundant evi
deuce of the inhuman lashing he had received,
but unfortunately for the'cause of justice and
humanity, he could not identify any of the party.
We do not know that Price's politics had any?
thing to do with his being whipped, and, if so, we
do not know which party ls responsible; but one
fact is a little singular which we will .venture to
-mention. On the eve of the last election, several
persons were cruelly maltreated, just m time to
have three strong Reform boxes tiirown out, and
this case occurs just before the Legislature de?
cides upon a contest concerning the same elec?
tion.?
Btotebreaklng and Attempted Arson.
Last Wednesday night some person broke Into
the store of Messrs. Branson A Ansley, of Gran?
ville. They rifled the money-drawer, m which
had been left a small amount of money, and took
from the showcase abont a handfnl or pocket?
knives, and, lt may be, appropi lated sundry other
articles. The villains then took from the counter
a bolt of homespun, and wrapping a Uve chunk or
llreln.it, placed lt in the back entrance. Fortu?
nately, the smell or the burning stuff - attracted
the attention of some of the theological students
who occupy the rooms over the store, and search
being Immediately made, they found the smoke
proceeding from the entrance mentioned. The
door was immediately broken open, and the Are
arrested before any serions damage had been
done. This occurred about 10 o'clock; had lt been
a few hours later, very disastrous consequences
would no doubt have lollowed, owing to the close
contiguity of several wooden buildings.
Inhuman Murder of a Negro.
The Tor kv il le Enquirer says: A negro, named
Thomas Black, who lived near Harmony, in this
county, three or four miles from the State line,
was murdered at his house on Saturday last.
The testimony addnced before the coroner's in?
vestigation elicited the facts that, at about l
o'clock on Saturday morning, the Inmates of
Black's house were aroused by the firing of guns |
tn bis yard. Surmising trouble, Black attempted
to conceal himself In the lort or his house, but
was discovered, when he attempted to make his
escape by flight, but was fired upon, and fell lu
bis yard, pierced by a number of balls, arter
which his throat was cut. The party, estimated
gat sixty in number, was recognized to consist of
white men, with the exception of three,?who
were disguised, and whose complexion conld not
be distinguished. They rode off m the direction
of North Carolina. The jury rendered a verdict
that "the deceased, Thomas Black, came to his
death by gun-shot wounds, and having his throat
cut by persons unknown, thongh it ls In evidence
that Samuel Randau, of North Carolina, and
John Hicks, and Mac Byers, of York County, S.
C., were In tLe company." On a warran' issued by
J. H. Faj s sou x, the coroner, Mac Byers has been
arrested by the civil authorities, and was lodged
m the jail, at this place, on Tuesday.

The first grinding on several estates has shown
the price too light, (say 5c,) and such places have
stopped, to have better concentration by cool
weather. This ls the effect of the-tempests In
low grounds, where the accnmnlated waters had
unsufticlent drainage to carry lt off. In molasses,
nothing done In the past week; new crop not yet
appearing In quantity to attract attention. Leaf
tobacco, suitable for Ne?? York, continued as ad?
vised last week, with $2 advance upon each bale.
When a contract, now marte, for the Spanish Gov
ernment ls lilted, there will be an abundance of
miers on hand iuitable for thc Northern trade.
