Three months of sawing and hammering have at last transformed the Washington Race Tracie into one or the most spacious and commodious Fair grounds to be fonnd in the South. The whole track has been surrounded by a close board fence eight feet high, which excludes straying cattle and vagrants, and gives the property a security that it bas long needed. The eatrance to the grounds ls through the two old sates at the northeast corner cf the track on Rutledge street, and between the g ate, and touching on the street, stands the grand building erected for the exhibition or the articles entered. The grand building has been under process or | erection ror three months, and to-day witnesses Its completion. It presents a fine sight at the head or the track, with its splendid balcony and long rows or windows. Mr. George W. Eagan,.t!i contractor, has employed sixty-eight hands three months In erecting this building, and has carried out bis contract under many difficulties in a wa that reflects great credit upon him. The interior or the bonding ls one grand hall, well ventilated, and admirably lighted by the large windows intervals or four feet along the whole extent the sides, a nd by the reflection from the white walls. On the right of the main entrance will be enclosed an apartment for the use of ladies rutt? ing the fair, and on the left a similar apartment for a committee roora. Twenty-four large tatles uro being made, upon which the articles on ex aibltion are tobe placed, and arrangements for the iron fountain and a stand for the band are rapidly progressing. Mounting one of the two itairways In the hall brings the visitor to the flue piazza commanding a splendid view of the track ?There the quadrupeds are to perform. The rubbish has beeu lately removed, and he grounds look neat and smooth. The Race frack has boen carefully worked, and with-.its Irm, level surface, seems to invite the tread of he magnificent stock so soon to grace Its surface, ieveral fine horses are already in town, entered or the fair, and among them we notice four plendtd animals belonging to Mr. Whitaker, of fortville. The animals are furnished with a sta? de, but the owner provides provender. "The old ockey club grand stand has been retained for a lar-room, and will be the only place on the grounds where spirituous liquors will be retailed, he arrangements for transportation to the .rounds are nearly completed, and trains will ?nu regularly from the. South Carolina Railroad )epot at short intervals, during the days that the ilr will be held. MURDEH OF A..CHARLESTO.VIAX.-Mr. Jesse lavage, well known some few years back as one f the proprietors of the Merchants' Hotel, corner f King and Society streets, in this city, was brn? aby-murdered tn- New Haven, Conn., on the 29th it. TUE ACADEMY OP MUSIC- English comedy alfords, perhaps, no more trying test of the gene? ral excellence of a'dramatic company than the School for Scandal. There ? hardly a character in the play that does not afford scope for acting of a high o.der; and failure or mediocrity many part or the cast ls pretty sure to become disagree? ably apparent. A fair house greeted the reappearance In Charleston last night of Miss Laura Keene as Ltdy Teazle. Of her admirable conception of the part, we have, ba a previous occa? sion, expressed our admiration; and we can perhaps give no hglher prafse to tho com? pany which she has gathered together with so much tact and discrimination than by saying that Its members gave her no unworthy support ta the play last night. LOUIS.-A train having n board several gentlemen, excursionists from t. Louis, has arrived at Savannah, Qa. The excursionists passed through Nash ille, and visited the great Sute Fair at Atlanta, a., on their way down to Savannah.
