special meeting of the Chamber, held yester?

! REFOEM MEETINGS.-A very earnest, and en?
thusiastic gathering of the citizens of Ridge -
ville and its vicinitywas held on last Wednesday -
night. The meeting was called to order hy
Mr. A, T. Cordes in a very pleasant, chaste
speech; and after the usual preliminaries. Mr.
W. M. Cummings was appoioted chairman,
atuLMr.'.T. J^Qariey secretary. Mr. Cummings
in a spirited address informed the meeting of
what had been done by the Beform Convention
the day previous at Walterboro. He painted
the prospect of Reform in Oolleton in glowing
colore, and appointed committees to transact
business touching the day of election.
.: At about ll P. Al., a tram arrived having on
board a delegation from Charleston, consisting
of Meaers. Nathans, Steinmeyer, Lawrence,
Sims and Thomas. Mr. Nathan?, in tones that
made the welkin rintr, addressed the assem?
blage for about an hour. He was listeneJ to
attentively, and .frequent questions and repor?
t?e passed be ween him and the colored citi?
zens-all in the best of humor. He mudd a
deep impression on hie colored audience that
will make itself felt at the Ridgeville, pole on

the. meeting of the. .Reform .Convention,? the
proclamation ordering the election wai for the
first. 1 time published; and at io o'clock the
.Charleston delegations, as lam informed,
went Into secret caucus, and at 12 o'clock the
convention into secret session, thus cutting off |
all communication with its members, and pre- ;
venting all canvassing unless lt was between
its own members. It was cn these grounds
that my friends and myself objected, more
especially when it is remembered that Mr.
Roche was a member of the convention.
My friends thought I had not been fairly,
dealt with, and a'few days after the nomina?
tion by the convention I was nominated by a
card, endorsed by forty of my fellow-citizens.
This nomination I did not immediately accept
until I had consulted with tay friends, and
submitted the proposition to Mr. Roche pub?
lished in my card of the 13th instant. Under
these circumstances, I am perfectly willing to
leave it to the determination of the voters of |
this county to decide between the nomination
of a convention so made, and the nomination
