Let the white people do nothing that will give
any pretence of excuse for calling out the col?

cause of Reform; and should the Governor's
minions attempt to intimidate- the people or
commit any outrage upon their rights, then let
us step forward In one organized and deter?

What tn? l'nIon Leaguers Think of it
-A Call from lancaster.
The Lancaster Ledger talks right out in
meeting. It says: "
Appearances would indicate that Governor
Scott Intends to attempt, at least, to carry pal
his' doctrine -of .^-Winchester Elfie Law'! in
8outh Carolina.. Every, day discloses some
new feature in the programme of the cam?
paign. It is said by certain Radicals here that
tho arma sent t?thls-county to be distributed
among the colored people-men of their party
-are for their protection against the whites.
"Others have said that tha '.-Scott Ring party"
are-determined to carry the elections in this
county, If necessary, at the point of the bayo?
net A speech was made in the League meet
lng on Tuesday night, 26th ult., In. which, the
members were counselled to organize at once
for this purpose. The speaker said: "There
are certain men here opposed to your having
these arms, but I .say bring them QD,. and. if; jt
is necessary, Tsay use-them for your rights."
What we have to Bay is just this: Knowing
the sentiment of the white people of this
county; they Would -deplore. anything calcu?
lated to disturb the friendly relations at pres?
ent existing between- the races. We regret
that Governor Scott ls taking such an unwise
step, In placing arms In the hands of one class
of citizens tolntimidate and ride rough-shod
over another class.. And with all the facts
and demonstrations before us, with threats
dally ringing in our ears, we are certainly not
so unmindful ol our welfare, and the safety of
our families, as to lie stilt and do nothing for
self-preservation.
! The''white-'oompaniesorganized throughout'
the State and tendered to Governor Scott as
volunteer militia, have been systematically re?
jected,1 while the eolored "companies bave Been
systematically accepted. This action of the .
Governor alone, who ls the recognized tribune ;
of the people, without regard to" party or race,
is sufficient to place every white man In the '
State upon hie guard. It ls advisable, that- the 1
whites organize, not to serve as'militia, but as
a protection to the several communities, and \
to defend at the noll* their own-rights ana the
righ'ttfoT those colored citizens"wno will vote
with them. God knows we want no disturb?
ance. .All we ask ls a fair election, allowing
every man to go up and deposit his vote as he
pleases. This let us have at all hazards !
Radical Tactics-What Scott is After.
The Columbia Guardian exposes the iniqui?
tous behaviour of Holden's ruffians, ?md says:
"HeMeiaV by'his arrests. Imprisonmente'arid
savage tortures, has done rro more, than to
carry out those principlesTo! government which
are embodied In Governor scott's W3nche6ter
rifle speech at Washington. He ls now organ- '
izing and arming a colored militia loree over
the entiie State, in view of the coming elec?
tions. Aggravations and insults will be offer?
ed to th? white people, to provoke violence, as
was done when Randolph was murdered, and
it will require the heroic forbearance that ha?
characterized the conduct ot the citizens ol'
North Carolina to withstand the assaults that
will be made against them.
