OF MORTALITY.-D?ring the week end? ing July the 16th, lhere were forty-six deaths An the city-seventeen whites and twenty-nine blacks and colored. Among the deaths were . seventeen infants under one year of age 'seven white and ten blacks and colored. One still-birth is reported. HONEST COLORED MEN ! You who have borne the heat and burden of the day, while the fat places have been gobbled by selfish white adventurers, show yourselves to be in? dependent and intelligent citizens by hearing j for yourselves to-night what the Reform can? didates have to say. No FIGHT.-During the earlier part ot yes- j terday, the streets were rife with reports that Bowen and T. J. Mackey had had an hostile . encounter, during which Mackey was severely beaten. The reports assigned any number of j places where the hostile meeting occurred. Atter, careful investigation, we are convinced that there was no troth whatever in the re- | ports. " _ A HIGH OLD Toes EXPECTED_To-night the Radicale of Charleston County will hold a con? vention at the Military Hall for the purpose of ] ejecting delegates to the State Convention, which assembles in Colombia on Tuesday next. The delegates to the County Conven? tion are composed of the friends of both Bowen and the Mackeys-the latter at present being { slightly In the majority. < As each faction will endeavor to send its delegates to the State Convention, lt is believed that the meeting will result" in a scene of disorder never before | ' witnessed in this section. CRUMBS.-Trying to do business- without ad? vertising is like winking through a pair of green goggles-you may know that yon are doing it, bnt nobody else does. 4 The executive axe is uplifted. One head has been brought to the block, and others are expected to follow soon. We shall see how this Mohammedan style of making converts, or rather of getting rid of troublesome friends, will succeed. It seems (o> be the policy of the . Benben Tomlinson ^and Niles G. Carpen? ter and General M. C. Butler will address the mass meeting to-night, was erected yesterday opposite the Charleston Hotel. - The anti-license party are paying very dear for their culpable neglect of municipal re? quirements. Quite a large number of cases have been reported within the last few days. An ?oe creamery, a grocery and two millinery establishments have been. reported and fined. Let other delinquents profit by their misfor? tunes. *: "."-/'-' " Bather a -serious ppssag?-at-arms occurred, on Monday night, at the corner of Elizabeth '? and Charlotte s tree ta, between Nat Campbell and Tom Marshall, when the former inflicted a dangerous wound on the latter with a com moa pocket-knilo. The cries of Marshall - brought the police to his assistance. Camp? bell was arrested and handed over to thc State authorities for prosecution. The municipal authorities have anticipated ! - ? miler's Almanac tius year, and brought on the dog days somewhat lu advance of the regular v -time. Every dog has his day, but now some of those days are being shortened. The plucky peddler who drew a knife on a policeman who demanded his "Ucease, was brought before Trial Justice Levy yesterday #aornlng, and gave bail in $200 for his appear? ance at court - An affray occurred in West street on Moa .day evening, in wiich Graham .Gaillard got ?the better of John Small., The matter under? went a Judicial Investigation, and Gaillard ?was flned-five dollars. The citizens of Ward 8 wooli most respect? fully proteat against the practice indulged by Idle boys in digging holes in the sidewalks, to facilitate the game known by the classic name of uKnucks.?, Some of, the holes are so deep and large as to endanger the limbs, If not the live?, ot nocturnal pedestrians. Will the po? lice look after the offenders and bring them to condign punishment ? ' Another very annoying habit of the same branch of precocious humanity, is the making of swings from the limbs of shade trees, and . leaving the sidewalks obstructed by them. Ia these dry times, when good drinking ?Od water is barri to get lt is suggested that the large cistern at Spring Street Church be pat in order, ann kept so by the city authorities, and that A'po'deem an be stationed there, as was the. case l ist summer, and have the pump se? cured by a lock and opened for the public for one hour In the morning and afternoon. B A CHANCE TO BET.-Our good old city is all agog over the Fran co- Prussia n wari* Now is the chance for the betting men. The length of the war, which will whip the first fight, which capi? tal will be occupied by the enemy first, Paris or Berlin, and other things afford plenty of J scope for judicious "hedging." Now that f both nations have "let loose the dogs of war," we shall soon hear that "red battle stamps his foot and nations feel the shock." Time ! INJUNCTION-On motion of Duryea and Coben, a rule was Issued on last Saturday, by Judge Carpenter, requiring George Addison, city sheriff, to show cause before the Circuit Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Charleston County, on the second Monday lu November next, at 10 A. M., or as soon there- | after as practicable, why a writ of prohibition should not be Issued, restraining him from proceeding to levy upon or sell property own? ed by Mr. John Chadwick, known as the Aca? demy of Music, and that until said hearing he be restrained from making any levy upon or sale of said property, on any paper in his hands claiming to be an execution for taxes. MACKETTTES VS. BOWENTTES.-A few days since the colored people at Strawberry, a place about twenty-seven miles from the city and about six miles off from the Northeastern Railroad, elected delegates, (composed of the friends of the Mackeys, who are supporting DeLarge for Congress in opposition to Bowen,) to the county convention. Day before yester? day, as reported, Bowen went to Strawberry with a number of his supporters to attempt to set aside the election and send delegates of | their own ilk to the convention. The Mackey [tes beard of thia movement, and about the lour of meeting T. J. Mackey and a few of his idherents came upon the ground. Shortly af? ter the last arrival, the meeting was called to jrder, and a white friend of Bowen's called to the chair, but his being objected to by Mackey ind his friends on the ground that be had jeen convicted of forging bounty papers of | :olored soldiers and imprisoned, was ruled rat, and a colored man was called to the chair instead. After much booting and howling, Bowen and Mackey spoke, the former In his Dwn behalf, and the latter in favor of sending i colored man to Congress. After the meet? ing, which resulted in two new delegates be ng elected, the crowd dispersed and started or the train. Bowen and two or three others cot to lt in time, and came on to the city, eaving the remainder of the party in the roods, where they remained until late at tight, when a special train was sent for them, .oe Strawberry delegation ls now claimed by toth factions._ Hotel Arrivals-July 19. This trite aphorism, though generali j applicable to our worldly actions lu every day life, can, with great propriety be used to exemplify the errors we are so apt to commit with reference to a care? ful attention tb our health. I "To err ls human," as regaras the means we ought to employ to preserve a healthy condition of the body. The blood is called the life or the body-the biotic auld-keep this up to the natural standard and health ls produced and life is prolonged. All the functions of the human frame, the cir culation, the digestion, the secretions and excre tiona, sleep, mental vigor, Ac, are performed per? fectly if the life fluid is in a healthy condition. SOLOMONS'S BITTERS will be found the great biotic corrector, the producer of the red parti cles of the blood, enriching and purifying it, whereby the whole machinery of the body will do its duty naturally. j aly20-t uths3 ^TEMPERANCE MEN ADMIT ITS utility. No attempt has ever been made or ever will be made, to disguise the character of PLAN TATION BITTERS. It contains alcohol; and no Bitters that do not contain alcohol are worth a rush. Water will neither preserve the virtues of tonic vegetables nor render them active In the system. This ls a chemical fact which no one competent to deliver an opinion on the subject will deny. Water tonics turn sour on the stom? ach, if they are not sour to begin with, (which ls frequently the case,) and produce and promote indigestion, Instead or curing it. Let lt, there fore, be distinctly understood that PLANTATION BITTERS ls an alcohol restorative. But mark this: lt is strictly a medicine, not a beverage. It is to be taken In limited quantities and at stated times, like other remedies and antidotes, and, therefore Its use Is lu accordance with tempe? rance law, as well as with that "higher law" which renders lt Incumbent upon every being gifted with reason to resort to the best possible means or accomplishing a salutary end. Conse? quently in summer the flesh loses, In some degree, Its firmness, the muscles lack their usual elasticity and vigor, and the weight of the body diminishes. These are clear indications that the ordinary sup? ply of the life-sustaining principle afforded by the food we eat is not sufficient to meet the require? ments of the system under a high temperature. There ls another reason for this besides the direct influence of the heat, viz : the loss of appetite and the weakening of the digestive powers which it occasions. Under these circumstances, a whole some lnvlgorant ls evidently needed, and the best and safest Is HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. nils admirable vegetable tonic and alterative acts favorably upon the system In several ways, It increases the appetite and facilitates digestion, thereby inclining the stomach to receive and en? able it to assimilate a dne amount of nourish ment. It also tones the relaxed secretive organs and the bowels. Under its operation the process of emaciation, occasioned by the dram through the pores ls arrested, the whole frame refreshed and invigorated, and the spirits exhilarated. The dyspeptic, the bilious, the nervous, the debilita ted, scarcely need to be told that lt ts precisely the stimulant and corrective they ought to take at this season.
