There ls, however, one afflnljfve type which ls
interesting from the fact that it cannot be
traced beyond the last dreader development
of liberalism, strenj thened by the reform bill
ol 1867. He is n "sc ind" politician, and repre?
sents his constltu^ucsjn society. He has al?

Just going there; he comes in to dinner very
late, and impresses hiB hostess with the belief
that Bomettlng is going on for the good of the
country.--'-On the same principle ne goes to
balls about two o'clock, and assures his part?
ners during the intervals between the figures
that there ls nothing going on in the House.
If he ?8 Introduced to any one, he offers him a
place in the gallery from which he can hear
the presentation of a petition or the asking of
a question, and contrives at the same time to
give the impression that there is only one
member who can introdute strangers, and that
heis that member. He stops everybody whom
he knows-In the street to inquire what their
opinion ls of the state of the currency,
and looks pained if the question is .evaded;
Ho goes into society, because he considers
that a little relaxation unbends the mind, and
when he ?B not discnealng politics, he ls apolo?
gizing for being Been. ; If a lew intolerant per?
sons ?call him occasionally tiresome, he has, on
the 'other hand,'the satisfaction Of hearing
many worthy people say that he is a rising
youngman. He has an extreme contempt for
tte good-natured and harmless struggler who
spends Bis time on landings or staircases, re?
trieving cloaks and third daughters and car?
riages-a variety which is too well known to
need description, which delights In afternoon
teas, and represents manhood at those mys?
teries. Like Gulliver, by tile Brobdignagian
maids ol honor, this struggler is treated "with
no kjnd of ceremonyand ls looked upon by
old worn.m aa one of themselves. He has,
however," the merit of performing definite ser?
vices in return for the Invitations he receives,
and sometimes crowns. a happy old age by ar?
ranging a marriage long despaired of. Au
have a certain small individuality, even down
to the drawing-room acrobat who issnpposed
to cause the amalgamation of a party, and
who at least succeeds In preventing all conver?
sation, while he sings, songs .which by some
strange accident are termed comic.
The disappearance, however, of all these ex?
istences would leave no void-they could have
no hope of being missed. The women, on the
other hand, to whom we have referred, are on
a wholly different footing. We have demon?
strated that they are social necessities; as much
so as tt?niOr lords of the treasury or vestrymen,
and the only wonder is that they have not been
called into being at an earner period. This
season they are appearing in quantities, like
the lady-birds and yellow files of last year.; It ie
equally- unnecessary to speculate -as to the
source- from which thev come to ns. ?They
leave their homes' and counties to do us good,
they supply a vaoaaey? raise tte general stand?

Their vanities are* very harmless. IfHhey

sons affected by the change. If they send out
their cards of invitation at first as recklessly as
wine merchants Issue their circulars, and ellen
witt as little result, the evil ls one which is
remedied In tte. succeeding season. We have
described the opportunities they enjoy. Thc
age is a very material one, and it ls painful
to think that strawberries In the bouse of
a lady-bird can be preferred to a com?
bination of Portugal grapes and sixteen
qnarterings. It ls needless to dilate upon
the advantages to be derived from them; any?
thing muet ce. welcomed which lins such an
obvious tendenoy to promote circulation and
stimulate rivalry;. There In no limit to the pos?
sible consequences. The sleeping palace may

The war in Europ e will, of course, affect all
vaines, but lt ls yet too soon to speculate on re?
sults. Cotton ls the most sensitive, yet the ad?
vance m gold win probably compensate for any
decline abroad. Naval Stores apparently should
suffer at once, as the closing of the North German
port9 will cat off8ome of our best customers.
