about the Ch?nese as servants. They under?
stand bow to make cotton, or can be taught,
as cotton ls a leading product in their own
country. You hare seen the Nankin cotton,
Which ls theirs. They learn everything so easy
yon wlfl be astonished. They have not only got
more sense than negroes, but more than many
white folks. They are very docile and
tractable, because they love money, and will
do anything for the money. Of course they
wm have to learn our ianguage, walch they
will soon do. Whin yon snow them how to
do anything once, they will do it exactly that
way ever alter that, They are remarkably
nice about everything-iiffer totally from the
negro. For house servants I would not give
on? ot them for' two negroes. I think the
trouble about their working on Southern plan?
tations would be that they know nothing what?
ever about managing a horse or mole. I have
.never seen one of then have anything to ob
with either. As to all other work of the farm
they would dolt better titan the negro ; but the
ploughing I have no idea they could be trust?
ed with at all. They aro capital with the axe,
and rival the Irish with the spade.
As to T?ages, Ac, they can be got in any

have to pay their way out, and afterward de?

pose yon could not get them for less than $12
a month and feed them: And at that they are
. cheaper than negroes, because yon do not
have to feed a whole family to get the services
of one. and their labor will be more reliable
than the negro for such as they can do. Tbey
w?l pretty much live on rice and fish, and
heans, dried and brought In barrels. You will
not And ns much difficulty as you imagine, in
providing for them. They will not contract to
go except in companies, and tbey make their
bargains straight and intelligently. One of
the-company will keep a Chinese e'toro for the
community, and you will be well Instructed,
what they want. They look very much
like yellow negroes, md act like lbem,
ont have five timen as much sense
as any one would suppose. I, am satisfied that
- the Chinese and blacks would hate each other,
and each be made better for the white man.
It would be some time Wore you could under?
stand them well enough to talk with them, but
they could go to work Immediately, n We have
had several of them for servants, since we have
been here, and one does all our washing and
Ironing. In a company for a neighborhood,
cay 200men, (they are nearly all men,) there
? would probably be two or three who could
. speak Kngii ah and traneiict business for all.
Taking all In all, som 3 can get along with
them finely, others cannot at au. If any ene
will be kind and patient, and pay them their
wages promptly, there will be no trouble. I
have seen a good deal of them, and think them
superior to a lower order of white,1 and not to
be compared to the negro.
