THE LATE WM. VILMOB-E 8IMM8.
Meeting of Citizens to Consider the
Practicability of Erecting a Monu?
ment to his Memory.
Ia response to a call through the papers for
the friends of the late Wm. Gilmore Simms, to
meet at the Charleston Library Rooms, to con?
sider the practicability of erecting a monu?
ment to his memory, a number of our most
prominent citizens assembled at the place
designated at 12 o'clock M. yesterday, among
whom we noticed lion. Alfred Huger, Judge
Geo. S. Bryan, Hon. W. D. Porter, General
James Conner. jTolonel C. H. Slmonton, Colo?
nel T. Y. Simons, Hon. Henry L. Buist, Ma?
jor T. G. Barker, J. Barrett Cohen, E. S. Dur?
yea, M. P. O'Connor. S. Lord, Jr., James M.
Wilkinson, Thos. M. Hanckel, C. R. Miles, G.
H. Sass, W. Y. Leitch, B. F. Evans, John Rus?
sell, R. S. Bruns.
Shortly after 12 o'clock Mr. B. F. Evans
called the meeting to order, and nominated
Hon. Alfred Huger as chairman.
Mr. Huger was unanimously elected, as was
Mr. C. R. Miles, who was subsequently nomi?
nated by Mr. Evatts, as secretary.
On taking the chair, Mr. Huger paid a glow?
ing tribute to the memory of the deceased, and
affectionately alluded to his intimate personal
relations with him, and how he learned to love
and revere the deceased, not only for intellec?
tual ability, but for his private worth.
Two letters relative lo the deceased and the
proper mode of paying a tribute of respect
to his memory were read-one from Rev. J.
W. Miles and the other from Mr. W. L. King.
At the request of a number of friends of Rev.
Mr. Miles, we publish, his letter in full, as fol?
lows:
To the Chairman of the Meeting held in refer?
ence to the memory of Mr. Simms:
Having received an invitation to attend this,
meeting, which it is not in my power'to ac?
cept in person, I beg leave, being with you in
spirit, to express my humble, but most heart?
felt concurrence with the object of the meet?
ing. It,has not assembled to eulogize Mr.
Simms-its very object shows our sense ofthat
worth and genius to which we propose a me?
morial tribute.. Can -there be . in any mind-a
doubt of. the "propriety" of such a tribute ?
Surely in no one who can sympathize with and
admire the heroic devotion with which Mr.
Simms not only cultivated letters for noble
ends, but I may say, in a certain sense, for the
sake of his beloved South, upon which has
been reflected the lustre of his own reputation.
Least at all can there be any such doubt in ?ny
one wno was privileged to enjoy his personal
friendship. It was unselfish,. generous-and,
abo ve" all, faithful and true as diamond, when
once it, was bestowed. It was-my privilege to
be brought into veryTIntimate .relations with
him, at a time when one's nature ls tried, and
the Beeret heart revealed-I mean at a time of
domestic, affliction. There was then knit be?
tween us a bond of affection, which he show?
ed on his death-bed was, on his side, as true,
and faithful, and loving as ever. And other
obligations I owe to his nobie and generous
spirit for encouragement and suggestion, and
intellectual communing,', which prompted and
aided me in some literary efforts, which al?
though of the very: humblest grade, might
otherwise have never been attempted at all.
As to the "practicability" ot the proposed
tribute, was there ever a question bf the prac?
ticability of Carolinians giving expression to
their generous Impulses, or or their ever fall?
ing to express gratitude and admiration for
the man whom they wished to honor ? It
seems to me, sir, that the objeet Of the meet?
ing need only be known, to secure Its accom?
plishment.
Asking your pardon for having so far tres?
passed upon you, I remain.'
Most respectfully,
. . Your obedient servant,
J. W; MILES.
Hon. w. D. Porter moved that a committee,
to consist of-:-citizens, be appointed tor
:he city and State at large by the chairman, at
ila leisure, who shall be charged with the duty

>e erected oven the remains of Wm. Gilmore
jimms, at Magnolia Cemetery, and of raising
be means necessary lor the purpose, and that
be said committee report at an adjourned
neeting lo be called by the chairman.
The motion was. unanimously adopted.
Mr. Evans said that Hon. J. B. Campbell had
.equested him to state to the- meeting that he
?egretted that urgent business would prevent
ila attendance.
On motion of Dr. Lebby. the meeting then

this distressing condition ls, in a majority of]
cases, attributable to a breaking down of the
digestive and secretary apparatus. Vitalize the
one and regulate the other; strengthen and sus?
tain the one, and stimulate and modify the other.
This can be readily done by having recourse to a
health-giving alterative vegetable tonic, that will
restore the dilapidated system, and rouse and re?
awaken the dormant corporeal and mental ener?

pm* MORE POWER THAN CALOMEL.
HOME EVIDENCE.-AUGUSTA, Ga., December l,
1889.-Messrs. Wm. H. Trat. <?. Lana- Gents: For
several years past, I have been subject to Bilious
attacks, and always was a Arra believer that there
was no remedy for the complaint but mercury,
until about a year and a half ago, as an experi?
ment, I tried your Vegetable Liver Pills, and was
agreeably surprised to And that they accomplish?
ed all the resal?s, and more besides, of Blue Mass
or Calomel, without any of their bad effects. I
was always an unbeliever In Patent Medicines,
but can say this for your Pills, that, since I com?
menced using them, I have not taken a particle
of Mercury in any shape, and I consider this fact
an important one, and one that those who are In
the habit of taking Mercury for Bilious diseases
can properly appreciate. I cordially recommend
them as the best Liver Medicine ever Introduced.

FLAVORING EXTRACTS.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.
GREAT REDUCTION IN PRICES.
QUALITY STILL FURTHER IMPROVED.
We beg leave respectfully to call the attention
of the public to our Superior Flavoring Extracts.
As ten years have now elapsed since we first in?
troduced them to the notice of the American pub?
lic, we deem lt unnecessary at present to enter
Into a lengthy description of their merits, Ac
There ls hardly a elty or town of any note in the
country into which they have not fonnd their
way. The reason of this widespread popularity
and daily Increasing demand ls owing entirely to
their peculiar excellence and intrinsic worth.
Being determine J to make them the Standard Ex?
tracts of the day, we have still further Improved
their quality, and now we firmly and honestly be?
lieve that they Btand without a rival. Onr Van lila
Extract cannot be surpassed for richness and
delicacy of flavor. It ls a strictly pure and high?
ly concentrated Extract of Vanilla Beans. In
short, we think lt the best that ls made, at least,
this ts the decision of the best judges In the coun?
try. We don't pretend to compete In price with
many of the so-called Flavoring Extracts of the
day, which are really but worthless compounds,
undeserving of the name.
For quality and style, we defy competition.
