?BERATED.-In the case of the State vs.
Stanisland Sharon, the accused was discharged
by Justice J. G. Mackey. It appeared that the
prisoner had given a check for eighty dollars
-on the Citizens' Bank, to a party, over his own
signature. The check was presented at the
bank, when lt was discovered that he had no
bank account; this led to the prisoner's arrest.
The Justice decided that as no money had
passed between the parties, lt was not an In?
dictable offence, and therefore the accused ,
was entitled to his discharge. i
BOLD ROBBERT.-A few days ago Rev. Father
Schachte left at the store of Mr. O'Connor, on
King street, to be cleaned and polished, a val- ?
uable silver chalice, inlaid with gold, and hav?
ing In raised work on the outside a number of
religions emblems, and the Inscription : "Pre?
sented to Father O'Neil, by the congregation
of St Patrick's Church, Cor his services to the
sick and poor;" and under it, "Bequeathed to
Father Schachte." While Mr. O'Connor was
ont, a bold thief stepped in and carried off the
base of the chalice, of solid silver. Officers
provided with search warrants from Trial
Justice T. J. Mackey are diligently at work in 1
the case. i
A white man named Napoleon Drummer, :
?who was arrested last Friday by Officer Burke, j
upon the charge or stealing the base of the (
?hailee, confessed the deed.
AMBROSINE_This name, says the New York '
Tribune, has been given by Charles TJ. Shep
ard, Sr., of South Carolina, to a mineral re- ,
Befouling both amber and rosin, which, he
thinks, originated In some of the coniferous '
trees that existed during the pleiocene epoch
In geology, when the phosphate formations l
lonnd In that State were in progress. It dif?
fers from any of the oxygenated hydro-car?
bons previously known. It melts into a clear, 1
yellowish liquid at abont 450 deg. Fahr., giving !
-offs considerable amount of succinlc acid be- 1
-fore melting. After fusion it yields a volatile ,
oil, which has a balsamic odor unlike that from 1
the rosin of the pines. Ambrosine is very '
-combustible, and, burning without ashes, <
gives a yellowish white light It ls soluble in \
alcohol, ether, chloroform, oil of turpentine, '
and in a solution of potash. *
MEDICAL EXPERTS AS WITNESSES.-The New
York Tribune, in discussing the question :
whether or not paid medical experts may not
be In some sense Interested witnesses, cites
the McFarland trial, the Victor Noir and other '
-cases In support of the opinion that they may ?
be, and says that the most recent Instance of
the views of a medical expert in a law case
-comes, within a few days, front Charleston, S.
C A prisoner having been taken before Jus?
tice Mackey, a physician came forward and
-claimed the prisoner as his patient declared
that the trial o? the case at law would ruin the ;
case which he was so successfully treating,
and vehemently Insisted that the necessity of ]
keeping the prisoner under the counterpane i
should be accepted as a counter-plea. The ,
JcisUce, however; resented the interference of
theTEscuIapIan expert, and, as he persisted in
lt imprisoned him for contempt" of court
This is the case of which mention was made ;
<s short time since.

Cases of wife-beating, by colored men, are
becoming very frequent ic the Justices' Courts.
Wives thus situated should do like the wife

The opinion of the city attorney is, that prl-1
vate property belonging to the city is liable to [
seizure and sale for debt, when levied upon
under Judgment of court, but that as the Bat?
tery, Artesian Well, and other city property, is
dedicated to public use, and ls, therefore, the
property of every individual citizen, their
seizure ls illegal, and will not hold good in
court. _ _ _

^WANT OF VITALITY.-SOME?
TIMES there ls a lack or vitality In large and ap?
parently well-developed frames. Herculean sin?
ews and muscles are not always Indicative of
stamina and constitutional vigor In their posses?
sor. " Health depends more upon the condition or
the stomach, the liver and the bowels, than upon
the breadth of the shoulders, or the size or loose
levers and pulleys or the system in which strength
is supposed to reside. All this grand animal ma?
chinery ls or itsell no protective against sickness | <
and decay. Easy and perfect digestion, regalar
and healthy secretions, uncontaminated blood, I <
and a regular discharge of the waste matter of | j
the body through the Intestines, the kidneys and
the pores, are thc most potent safeguards against
disease, thc best guarantees or longevity. To pro?
mote these objects ls the great end and purpose
or HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. The In?
gredients of which thc Great Tonic and Altera?
tive is composed are taken solely from the vege?
table kingdom, and their medicinal virtues aro
not counterbalanced by the acid and poisonous
elements which exist, more or less, In all thc
powerful mineral drugs. Sufferers from Indiges?
tion, biliousness, Intermittent fevers, nervous de?
bility or constipation, not only find Immediate re?
lief from the use of this agreeable stimulant and
InvlgoraDt, but become conscious, as time wears | j
on, of an Increase of constitutional elasticity and
vital force. Labor and exposure no longer pro- j I
duce the same effect upon them as heretofore,
and they feel as if they had acquired a new hold | <
on lire, a new reserve or physical and mental en?
ergy. This has been the experience of thousands
of both sexes, and every day adds to the mass of 11
confirmatory testimony. At this season or the | \
year, when the temperature and state or the at?
mosphere exercise a peculiarly depressing Influ?
ence over the minds and bodies or invalids,
HOSTETTER'S BITTERS is the only tonic upon
which the debilitated can rely for swift and per
manent restoration._ Junl7-D?c6
?ST- MORE POWER THAN CALOMEL.
HOME EVIDENCE.-APGI'STA, Ga., December l,
I860.- Messrs. Wm. H. THU ??. Lana-Gents: For
several years past, I have been suhjeot to Billons
attacks, and always was a firm believer that there
was no remedy for the complaint but mercury,
nntil about a year and a half ago, as an experi?
ment, 1 tried your Vegetable Liver Pills, and was
agreeably surprised to lind that they accomplish?
ed all the results, and more besides, of Blue Mass
or Calomel, without ojiy of their bad effects. I
was always an unbeliever in Patent Medicines,
but can say this for your Pills, that, since I com- | (
men ced us?jg them, I have not taken a particle
of Mercury in any shape, and 1 consider this fact
an important one, and one that those who are in
the habit ot taking Mercury for Bilious diseases
can properly appreciate. I cordially recommend
them as the best Liver Medicine ever introduced.

FLAVORING EXTRACTS.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.
GREAT REDUCTION IN PRICES.
QUALITY STILL FURTHER IMPROVED.
We beg leave respectfully to call the attention
of the public to our Superior Flavoring Extracts.
As ten years have now elapsed since we first in?
troduced them to the notice of the American pub?
lic, we deem lt unnecessary at present to enter
Into a lengthy description of their merits, Ac
There la hardly a elty or town of any note in the
country into which they have not found their
way. The reason of this widespread popularity
and dally increasing demand ls owing entirely to
their peculiar excellence and intrinsic worth.
Being determined to make them the Standard Ex?
tracts of the day, we have stUl further improved
their quality, and now we firmly and honestly be?
lieve that they stand without a rival. Our Vanilla
Extract oannot bo nnrpanscd for richness and
delicacy of flavor. It ls a strictly pnre and high?
ly concentrated Extract of Vanilla Beans. In
short, we think lt the best that ls made, at least,
this ls the decision of the best Judges in the coun?
try. We don't pretend to compete tn price wita
many of the so-called Flavoring Extracts of the
day, which are really bat worthless compounds,
undeserving of the name.
For quality and style, we defy competition.
