Many of onr business men went, caught as many fish as they wanted, and altogether enjoyed themselves hugely. FATHER GARESCHE'S LECTURE.-The Cathe? dral Chapel was thronged last night to hear the lecture of Father Garesche on the subject of j, "Transubstantiation." Near the Scott's Hill Church, twelve miles from Wilmington, are the graves of two Confederate soldiers, upon the head-boards of which are the following inscriptions : J. M. Easters, Company * 0, isth Regiment, s. C. Volunteers; died Febru? ary 22,1803. John A. Mann, Company H, 8th Regiment, N. C. State Troops; died July ll, 1863. IMPORTANT MEETING.-An extra meeting of I the German Rifle Club will be held at Llndstedt [ Hall, to-morrow evening, at 8 o'clock. A. Malloy 'a plantation, a colored child, the daughter . of Patrick Fleming, was burned so badly that lt died In five hours afterwards. Her mother was In a field near by, working at the time, and alarmed by the screams of the little unfortunate, * hurried to the house, but arrived too late to save lt from fatal Injuries. How TO MAKE ICE LAST.-TO make a little ice last a long time, get a double pocket of strong woollen cloth, have a space of two inches or so ? between the inner and outer pockets, and pack this space as foll as possible with feathers-hen'i feathers will do. With a pocket thus constructed and kept closely tied at the mooth, a few pounds of Ice may be kept a week. As ice. wiU be pretty -dear thia summer, this knowledge may pro7^ im? portant. ._ SENTENCED.-It will be remembered that a short time ago the Jury of inquest upon the body of a colored man found that the deceased had come to his death from tubercular consumption, and were or the opinion that the death was somewhat attributable to the malpractice or a Colored man named Alex. Hamilton, who prac tifies medicine. Hamilton was then arrested and committee" to Jail Yesterday he waa arraigned before Trial Justice J. G. Mackey upon the charge of practicing medi?me without a license. He ?as found guilty, and sentenced to pay a tine or j , fifty donara. UNITED STATES COURT_HON. GEORGE S. BRYAN, JiDOS. Petition ..for involuntary bankruptcy.. The company h av - lng failed to show canse, were adjudged in bank? ruptcy, and lt was ordered that George W. Water? man be appointed provisional assignee until the election of one, and that he take charge oran property of the bankrupts; also ordered that the said petition and proceedings be referred to Reg? istrar Jaeger, and that on br before the 18th of Jone, the provisional assignee shall file with the assignee a duplicate copy or the petition and the schedule and indebtedness. Circuit Court.-In the oase of the United States IVB. Alfred Huger, an additional order amending -.a former one waa made. . AN OLD MERCHANT VICTIMIZES THE MER? CHANTS OF SAVANNAH.-Day before yesterday the Savannah'community was more than shocked, lt waa actually fermented, by the discovery or im? mense forgeries on the part of Messrs. Epstein & Einstein, a weU established dry goods firm, carry? ing on business at No. 140 Congress street. As soon aa the forgeries became known Epstein fled, tut Bn?teta was arrested and gave ball in the eum ur $8000; but he denies any knowledge or the forgeries. When Einstein was arrested the goods er the Arm were levied apon. The stock though large, ls not sufficient to cover the losses, which it ls believed, win amount to almost $70,ooo. However, losses footing up over $40,000 have been discovered. Parties who seem to know, ?tale that this system of forging on the part or Epstein has been going on for a year or more, his plan ha vic g been to pay his obligations promptly, ?, oath payment running bim, however, still deeper ? into the slough of defalcation and consequent ruin. It Ls believed that most of the money was lost at the* gaming table. CRUMBS.-The Council Committee of Ways and Means have been holding a meeting to pre? pare business for the next session of the City Council. It is stated that some Northern capitalists pro? pose buying White Point Garden when it is offer? ed for sale by the sheriff. One of the colored prisoners died at the Jail yesterday. He had been ill for some time. The steamer Dictator has been taken off the Florida line for the summer. The property at the corner of Pitt and Beaufain streets, advertised by Messrs. Leitch A Bruns to be sold at auction to-day, has been sold privately. THE SUPREME COURT.-The decision of the Supreme Court has been flied in the case or W. R. Burgess vs. W. R. Carpenter. This was an action brought to recover damages which plaintiff claim? ed to have sustained by reason ol a gunshot wound charged to have been inflicted by defend ant upon one Henry Burgess, who was a contrac? tor with plaintiff in common with other persons for a share of the crop, which all parties to the contract were labor?o; to raise at the time the gunshot wound was said to have been Inflicted upon the said Henry Burgess. The court held, (Justice Willard dlssentlag,) that on the state cqptof the plaintiff he had no cause of action; lt made no difference at what stage of the case the Judge below ordered a non-suit, and his inter? position stated In the brief did not prejudice the plaintiff. At times the cars are filled with a cloud of Inst so thick that the panting passengers can hardly see from one door to the other, and the company owe lt to the public, lt seems to us, to make travel on their, line more pleasant than a lying trip across an African desert: CHARLESTON, May 17, 1870.
