Lyon vs. James Pawley, an appeal for a new trial was refused. Admiralty Court.-In the case of Wm. Buckley VB. the schooner Dearborn-a libel for vessel and freight-lt was decreed that the vessel be turned .over to the libellants. THE ARTESIAN WELL.-Yesterday's NEWS in referring to the fact that the Artesian Weil and White Point Garden will be sold by the sheriff on the 6th of June, to satisfy an execution held by "the executors or George Gibbon, ror over -due city stock, amounting to about $40, ooo, gave brief accounts of each one of the places. Since . then, we have learned the following particulars ?concerning ike Artesian Well. The first well was commenced In 1847 or 1848, and was finished about four years later, costing $22,000. Ita depth ls twelve hundred and fifty feet, three inches in diameter, and yields about thirty thousand gallons of water per day. The second well was begun in 1855, and ls not yet completed. It ls twelve hundred feet deep, eight Anches in diameter, but yields only about five hun? dred gallons omvater per day. This well was partially choked ap in some way, and all efforts to remove the obstacles have been futile. Mr. A C- Welton, who has the lease of the welL .bas arranged a nice suite of bathrooms, and many of our citizens enjoy the luxury sr an arte alan water bath-on'e of the greatest luxuries to be .enjoyed in this sectioar Mr. W. has the lease for ten years, eighteen months of which has passed. _? # MECHANICS' LYCEUM.-A meeting of the members of this ins titution was held last evening .in the hall on King, near Calhoun street. Mr. Fisher called" the meetlng-to order, and on Oils motion. Mr. White was elected president; Wm. Brewer and J. M. Mulvaney, vice-presidents; "$:W. Kelley and T. Hoghes, secretaries. Kr. W. P. Russell stated that Mr. Alexander -Cameron had promised to preside at this meet? ing, but was prevented by sickness. He then presented an apologetic letter from Mr. Cameron, -anc. also an address. The address encouraged the member to proceed with the good work com? menc?e*, and expressed the interest which the author felt in the enterprise. pa motion, the letter and address were received ? as Information. ~fWr. Russell then, on behalf of the board of directors, who were appointed at the last meeting to make arrangements for a permanent organiza? tion, reported that they had transacted the greater part of the work entrusted to them, and thea submitted the constitution and by-laws. Barnwell Appoints Delegates. The Barnwell County Convention assembled, as reported, on Saturday last the Uth Instant. On motion or Colonel w. H. Duncan, Mr. G. P. Harley was called to the chair, and Messrs. E. A. Bronson and J. S. Shuck requested to act as sec? retaries. After a number of speeches by both white and colored delegates, a committee, consisting of two white and two colored delegates, were appointed Tor the purpose of suggesting to the meeting pro? per persons to represent Barnwell County in the approaching State Convention, to be held at Col? umbia on the 16th of June. The committee suggested the following persons and their report was unanimously adopted: Bry? ant Weathersbee, chairman; Daniel Minor, R. B. Wilson, Robert Aldrich, B. W. Middleton, William Singleton and W. L. Ball. The chairman was in? structed to fill any vacancies that might occur. It was Resolved, That each township be requested to hold a meeting at its voting ground-or some other convenient point in its bonnd9-on the 4th day of July next, to nominate six men-three whites and three colored-delegates to a grand county convention, to meet at Barnwell, on the Saturday following, to nominate candidates for district officers. There being no further husiness to transact, the meeting was then adjourned.- i SODDEN DEATH.-Yesterday morafcg a col? ored man named Fred. SpWcer died at the Guard? house of an apoplectic flt. He was-arrestcd carly Sunday morning, while-in a drunken state, and confined In a ceU. He was subject to fits. Coro? ner WhlUng held an Inquest, and the jury re? turned a verdict that he had died while In a flt. A REMARKABLE STORY.-A few days since, there was a colored man in the city with a scar entirely around his neck. It is stated that dur? ing the closing days of the late war he was tried by a drumhead court-martial, found guilty, sen. tenced to death, duly hung, and pronounced dead by two surgeons in attendance, one of whom secured the body. He then restored the hanged man to life. Although he was to all appearances dead, yet the vital spark was not quite extinct. The hanged man hld himself until the war was over, and then settled on a farm within thirteen miles of the city, where he is now at work. The scar alluded to ls but the marks of the rope by which be was suspended. The execution, it is alleged, took place in Kershaw County. It is also stated that the surgeon who restored the man to Ufe is now a resident of this city. Senator Robertson has presented the petition or John Fox, of Lexington County. South Caro - lina, praying the removal or his political disabil ties. The lady proprietor of an ice cream saloon was arrested yesterday upon a warrant issued by Trial Justice Mlshaw, for refusing to sell Ice cream to colored persons. A little boy, who gives his name as Isaac Brown, is at the guardhouse. He was picked hp in the streets. Some drunken Individuals contributed $15 to the city treasury, yesterday, by order of the Mayor. A. C. Richmond, Wm. J. McKinlay, Sam Dicker- ? son, John G. and E. W. M.
