DEATH OF A COLORED WOMAN. - An old col?
ored woman died very suddenly night before last
at the place of Captain Wiley, near the Six-mile
Pump. During her old age she had been taken
-care of by Captain Wiley, whose slave she was,
and when emancipation came she refused to
leave him. Coroner Whiting wen> up to view
the body yesterday, and decided-that she died
from old age._
' .NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.-Yester?
day morning a small boat, in which were three
men, two white and one colored, upset ta front
-of Ferguson's wharf. The colored man and one
of the white men swam to the wharf, but were
so exhausted on reaching it as to need assis?
tance to get upon lt. The other man, who contd
not swim, clung to the boat until rescued by a
-boat from a steamer near by.
.SUDDEN DEATH OP A SOOTH CAROLINIAN. -
The Richmond, (Va.) Enquirer relates that a gen?
tleman named John L. Humphreys, a native of j
Anderson, s. C., died on Saturday night at the
infirmary of the Medical College of that city, very
suddenly. He bad arrived In town recently from
Kew York, and registered himself at the Spots?
wood Hotel, presenting a card which Indicated
that he was oonnected with the Arm of Eldridge,
Dunham A Co., dry goods merchants, No. 340
Broadway, New York, and it ls supposed he was
acting aa their agent. Becoming.very mach In?
disposed, Hr. Luck, of the Spotswood, deemed it
advisable to place Mr. Humphreys in the College
infirmary, which was done. Saturday night the
atjCadant carried in his supper, but he told him
to take it away, as he did not want anything.
During the night he was heard by the occupant
pf the ward adjoining, talking to himself. In the
morning, when the attendant opened the door of
his ward, she found him lying on the floor dead.

COLORED WOMEN.-One cf Leslie's -special
artists" writing from Charleston, says that the
advantage the colored men enjoy in having
their women to work with them, may not be the
case a rew years hence. 'iThe young negro girls
or that day will doubtless be desirous of Imitating
their white sisters in all manners and rashlons;
and when they do, their husbands, brothers and
fathers, like those of the pale races of this era,
wlU have all the work for their share of life's toil
and trouble."
FATAL ACCIDENT.-Mrs. Caroline Reid, moth?
er of Mrs. L. B. Lee, of Columbia, met with a fatal
accident on Sunday afternoon, the 15th Instant,
near old P Ickens Courthouse. M<~. and Mrs. Reid,
with two little boys. Samuel Keith and Willie
Reid, were riding in a carriage down a steep hill,
when the horse ran off, throwing Mrs. Reid and
the two little boys out of the carriage. Mrs. Reid's
head struck a rock, by which she was instantly
killed. Samuel Keith had his head badly hurt,
and Willie Reid had his ankle sprained. Mr. Reid
was not hurt.
DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN.-Hon. John
Foster, a prominent citizen of Augusta, died at
his residence o n Bay street Monday, after a long
and very painful Illness. Mr. Foster for many
years occupied a very prominent position in the
municipal affairs of Augusta, 'le repeatedly
served as a member or the City Jouncil, and was
also elected to the highest office within the gift
or his constituents-that of Mayor of the city. He
held that position at the time the municipal gov?
ernment was removed by General Pope and the
military connell with Foster Blodgett as Mayor
appointed its successor.
LMPORTAXT DECISION.-A very important de?
cision was made yesterday by his Honor, Judge
Bryan, in the District Court, sitting In bankruptcy.
The question was whether discharges in bank?
ruptcy could be granted, unless the assets of the
bankrupt should pay arty per cent, or the debts.
The 33d section or .the Bankrupt act or 186"
provided, that in coses commenced arter one
year from the time the act wea: into operation,
no discharge should be granted, unless the assets
of the debtor should pay'fifty per centum of the
claims against his estate, unless the assets In writ?
ing of a majority la number and value of the
creditors who had proved should be had.
His Honor, Jadge Bryan, has decided that the
act of Congress of 27th July, 1S68, has modified
the act of 1867, BO that lt ls not necessary that the
assets should pay fifty per centum, but that they
should be equal to fifty per centum or the claims
proved.
Thia view was presented to the court by Messrs.
Simons ? Simons, and Messrs. Memmlnger, Jer
vey A Plnckney, as the true reading of the
statutes; and Judge Bryan, after hearing the ar?
gument, decided that that construction was right,
and granted the discharge.
It will thus be seen that many debtors who
have been restrained from applying ror the bene?
fit of the Bankrupt act since 31st December, 1868,
upon the generally received opinion that a dis?
charge could not be had unless their assets should
pay fifty per centum of their debts, can enjoy its
advantages ir their assets be equal to fifty per
cent, of their debts.
