RSCAFTCBE OF AN ESCAPED MURDBRKR.-lt
-will be remembered that in 1S63, a negro named
William Singleton outraged and murdered a
Miss Crook, In Greenville, S. C., far which he was |
tried and condemned, but escaped from the
Btoufoi tjail some time in 1SS9. It appears tha?,
he went to Savannah and obtained employment
4t the mil! or Mr. Jeff. Roberts. The sheriff or
Beaufort, hearing or his whereabouts, went to
Savannah and arrested Singleton; but again he
was fortunate, and made a second escape by
draw :.ig himself rrom his coat aud swimming the
cana!, leaving Hie garment in thc tuuds or the
sheriff, ne was not again heard or till on Wed?
nesday night last, when Mr. T. M. Taylor, engi?
neer at Mr. Rob-rts's mil, recognizing him, inter"
rogated him as to what he was doing, Ac., ami
.was luforaicd by Singleton that he was on the
bunt ror work. Further Inquiries elicited infor?
mation as to his abiding place, when Mr. Taylor
took the proper steps ror his recapture by calling
upon officers Morgan and Entires, at hair-past
twelve o'clock Wednesday night, and conducting
them to his lodging place, accompanied with a
posse to assist in overcoming any resistance
that might be offered. The party surrounded the
house, when thc officers and Mr. Taylor entered
tit and commenced their search. They found scat?
tered over the floor or the dee upwards or eight or
ten couples or disreputable character. The last
couple reached discovered the game, and Mr.
Taylor nailed his captive, who, Unding himself
recognized, made an ?Hort to escape through the
.window, but was brought to by a timely shot
.from the pistol or Mr. Taylor, lt wa? with great
difficulty that the officers prevented the crowd
?which was assembled from rescuing the prisoner.
The following day he was committed to Jail, to

EnglUh Opera.
In calling attention to the fact that a season of
opera ls about to be Inaugurated in this city under
the competent control of the accomplished prima
donna, Mrs. Caroline Rlchings-Bcrnard, and that
the first representation will take place on Mon?
day, the 20th instant, wo are sure that wc shall
alford unaffected pleasure to the music lovers of
Charleston. Mrs. Bernard (known to the lyric
stage as Caroline Rich lng:;) conceived tho idea of
popularizing the work of thc great masters, and
presenting them In English form to thc public.
Bslng an excellent linguist as well as vocalist,
she brought to thc task of translating her libret?
tos from the French and German, the finest ac?
quirements. Beginning in 18C8, she has brought
out and successfully performed twenty-five ope?
ras, tea ot which are of her own translation. It
was ia that year that she gathered around her
her present troupe, composed of the best
artists. The troupe has played ten months
out of twelve for the last four years,
and in a manner to establish its reputation
above all the German and Italian companies in
this country. The Empres?arla is said to be an
enthusiast in her heart, and has devoted her un?
tiring energies to thc perfection of her troupe.
The latter consists of herself, Miss Emma Ho wi
son, a young and handsome prima donna, who
has gathered a chaplet of laurels In the part of
Arline In the "Boherniau Girl," Mmp. Kemp Bow?
ler, Mrs. nenry Drayton, and Miss AnnaMischka.
Among the gentlemen of the troupe arc thc
names of Messrs. B. Bowler, Pierre Bernard,
Henry Drayton, James A. Arnold, II. C. Peakes,
James G. Peakes, and Warren White. The re?
markable ieature of thc troupe, In this latitude
at least, is Its strong and well drilled chorus of
thirty singers. The troupe has run a brillaint
career in thc North and West, and In New Orleans,
even in competition with the admirable French
company at thc Opera-House. has sung to over?
flowing houses.
Thc selections from Us rci-ortoiie for ?ts short
week in Charleston are most judiciously made
the majority of the operas never given in this
city, and none of them, except "Trovatore,'" for
many years. They are-"Maritana," by Wallace;
"Bohemian Girl," by Balfe; "Somn?mbula," by
Bellini; "Trovatore" and theshocklng "Travlata,"
by Verdi; "Doctor of Alcantara" (comic,) by Elch
berg, and the "Crown Diamonds," by Auber.
The orchestra ls led by the competent baton of
Mr. S. Behrens.

PS- HELP FOR THE MISERABLE
No wonder that the face of thc dyspeptic has a
dragged, worn, hopeless expression that ls pitiful
to see. No wonder that the miserable martyr to
Indigestion -ls fretrul, Irritable and unsocial.
Whoever can bear the pangs of this tormenting
complaint cheerfully sud with an unruffled tem?
per, is little short of a saint. But why should
human fortitude continue to be thus severely
tried, when an absolute specific for the disease is
always at hand. Everywhere within the limits
of civilization In this hemisphere, HOTETTER'S
STOMACH BITTERS ls obtainable, and the history
of thc first ease of dyspepsia In which it has been
administered In vain, has yet to bc written. The
sickness at thc stomach, the sense of weakness
and stupor, thc feeling of emptiness and hollow?
ness before eating, and of oppression afterwards,
the fluttering of the pulse, the Intense nervous ir
rltatlon, thc morbid Indisposition to exertion, the
weariness of life and indifference to all its plea?
sures, which are among the symptoms of thc dis?
ease in Its chronic form, arc rapidly ameliorated
by thc tonic operation of this palatable vegetable
restorative, which seems to renovate and quicken
all the dormant forces of the system, and rouse
the mind from the apathy and gloom Inseparable
from a derangement of the digestive and secre?
tive functions. In ordinary cases, a few weeks
suffices to complete the cure, but when thc dis?
ease ls complicated, as it often ls, with torpidity
of the liver, severe constipation, impurity ot the
blood, and a sluggish circulation, a longer time
may bc required. Persevere, however, and the
result is certain. An encouraging Improvement
will be perceptible from day to day, and the con?
valescent, knowing and feeling that he or she ls
on the high road to health, will await the happy
issue with comparative patience._aprl? 0
