[Several C-.trioas Examples.
The pending investigation concerning thc
death of the Welsh fasting girl reminds the Tal!
Hall Gazette of several curious instances of long
abstinence from food in the sixteenth century. It
.ays :
In 15S4 there was a case of a girl at Heidelberg
which caused so much wonder that the Count
Palatine appointed a commission of Ave matrons
to watch her, and they reported that her absti?
nence both from food and drink was complete,
and in an account published in Frankfort in 1587
there is an advertisement to the effect that the
girl still remained In the same state.
A few vears after, Jane Baton, thc daughter of |
a locksmith in a village near Poictiers, became
celebrated nuder the title of the "Maid of Confo
lans" or of "Poitou." In her eleventh year, alter
a violent attack or vomiting, she remained specch
. less for nearly a month, and thenceforth, though
sh? recovered all her faculties except the com?
plete use or one hip, she could take neither meat
nor drink, and even declined thc sucking or sweet?
meats, which thc Knghsh narrator truly tells us
are "agreeable to such young years." At thc
time he tells thc story, she had fasted near three
years, but in all other respects had . et urned to
her ordinary occupations-sleeping, spinning and
marketing, and making herseir in no way an
object or compassion, although "sometimes rrom
her eyes Issued a few tears."
But a fuller and more interesting account is
that or a boy named Codean, given by "Simeon
de Provcncheres, M?decin du Boy," or which wc
have before us the fourth edition, printed at Sens
in 1616. It consists or live discourses, going vcr r
elaborately into all the physical conditions or the
case. Including the autopsy or thc youthfol prod?
igy. We will not reproduce the scientiito de?
ductions or thc worthy doctor, Inasmuch as very
few of his premises will stand the test of modern
discovery; but the facts respecting his patleut
are stated with simplicity, without any apparent
credulity, and with no application to any espe?
cial theory. The state of abstinence from food
and drink lasted four years and eleven months.
The flrat essay was written before the chUd was
taken to Fontainebleau, to be shown to the King
and Queen, and had returned home much exhaus
. ted with the journey.
At that time the' doctor had only known the
case by credible testimony, but he was then de?
termined to judge for himseir. Codean was
brought to his house by his parents, apparently
without any difficulty, and folly examined to hts
satisfaction. A short time arter he persuaded the
father to leave the child alone with him for some
days, and be gives the most complete details or
its demeanor and condition. Ile was a pleasant,
handsome little follow, rather/nrowte at first, but
soon adapting himself to a new life. Ile slept
comfortably alone, said lils prayers devoutly, was
easily amused, and full of activity. The subject
of food or drink was never mentioned, as it
seemed to annoy him; but he made no difficulty
in Ettling at table with those who were eating,
. and would even say grace.
The vlBlt was repeated on two other occasions,
and at the last the doctor found him stronger and
firmer on his legs, but not grown iu height from
Ahe time he first saw him. All this time his
tongue wes red, his breath pure, and his teeth
clean. About the end of the second year or his
fast, he l<?t the use of his legs, and was confined.

slept on a paillasse with his clothes on; at the end
of that time he suddenly recovered his strength,
and went about as before. A short time after he
was attacked with smallpox, which he took light?
ly, and the pustules soon disappeared, without in?
jury to the skin. His usual occupation was that
of watching in the fields, and he was very adroit
In snaring and netting birds. One day having
returned from Seas, and complaing of the heat",
ne asked his father to go and see a surgeon who
had promised him a gun, and during his absence
fell into a high fever.
In Uils condition he put a pitcher of water to
lils lips and wetted them, but would not swallow 1
a drop, thongh evidently enjoying the coolness
on his face and hands. His rather returning with?
out the gun, he seemed vexed, but soon said, "It
would do me no good now," mid attrr two days'
unconsciousness, expired. The dissection showed
that the child died or inflammation of thc lungs.
The upper portion or the oesophagus was found to
bc tightly compressed, but the lower part open
and tull or thiuk phlegm. There were several
dead worms in the body. M. de Provenchcres's
theories on this prodigy excited much controver?
sy and objection, but there does not seem to have
arisen In auy quarter any suspicion or Imposture
or collusion, in another account or the same
chHd, lt is mentioned that Monsieur Siby, another
doctor, geing to see him, could not get him to
take his hands from his face, which the mother
explained by his terror, lest food thould be pre?
sented to him by any one. Instances are not
wanting or three strange affections among the
higher classes or society.
A certain Marquis de Pizany, an Italian diplo?
matist, was never known to drink; and on a visit
or the King and Queen or France to Blois in lois,
a gentleman rrom Provence was presented to
them who had the pecu Iarity or living without
food or drink, with the exception or sometimes
rinsing his mouth with a Utile sugared water.
He was apparently a man or condition, and at?
tended by two servants or line person, lively con?
vection and good manners. Under thc pre?
tence or not knowing where he came rrom, but
no doubt for tho purpose or testing his physical
Singularities, the magistrates kept him m dt-r ar?
rest for a fortnight, but they could detect no
fraud, and alter having borne his imprisonment
with much good humor, he was conducted back
to his hostel, which he soon left to return home.
Now, allowing every scope for exag?ration, and
every probability or occasional deception, these

investigation at this moment could beso thoroush
ly examined that it could bc known on how little
nourishment this Welsh girl really futislstcd. and
what were flic nervous conditions under which
the abstinence became, as her mother expressed
