ATTENTION*, LAWYERS. - Yesterday Judge
Bryan gave notice that on and after to-day the
civil law docket of the United Sutes Court would
be called regularly, with the exception or cases in
which counsel from the country are engaged.
These will be called on and after Monday next.
SURVIVORS' ASSOCIATION.-The anniversary
meeting of this association will be held to-night.

THE STONEWALL FIRE COMPANY had their
new steamer ont last evening for trial. With ono
hundred and ten pounds of steam, water was
thrown two hundred aud twenty-five feet. Tho
company will parade this afternoon In full uni?
form, and give their steamer a trial at the comer
of King and Broad streets.
. |bvo WOMEN DROWNED.-A dug-out contain?
ing a man and two women, all colored, while in
Wappoo Cut, Sunday evening, was swamped and
the two women drowood. The man reached thc
shore In an exhausted condition. He with others
searched for and found the bodies. Coroner
Whiting was notified, and yesterday held an in?
quest, the jury returning a verdict of accidental
drowning.

about 3 o'olock, was occasioned by the burning of
a small wing of the residence of Rev. Thomas
Smythe,'on Meeting street, near Lightwood alley.

ous exertions of the firemen prevented any dam

COLLEGS-A meeting of--the.Alumni of thc
Charleston College iras held last night in thc
chapel of the college.
The meeting was organized, on motion of Mr.
D. S. Henderson, by calling to the chan* the Hon.
H. D. Lesesne, and requesting Mr. D. Hager Ba*
.cot to aot as secretary. An Alumni Association
was then formed, to be kjiown as the "Alumni
Association of the College or Charleston." The'
constitution of the Alumni Society of 1347 was
adopted with amendments. An election of officers
for the ensuing year was then entered Into, re?

REV. DR. HICKS'S LECTURE,-The first of a
series of lectures by Rev. W. W. Hicks was de?
livered last night to a select and appreciative
audience at the Academy of Music. The lecturer
discussed ludia, and a variety or other matter?,
-with bis wonted fluency and animation or utter?
ance, and briUiancy or diction. The lecture was
too long, being enlarged by frequent digressions
from the subject ; yet there seemed to be no flag?
ging of Interest as the three stages of Indian
history-the independent, the Mohammedan, and
lite British-were unfolded, Interspersed with
some personal reminiscences and reflections.
The British conquerors and traders were handled
with great severity, too great, we think; for
the declamations of Burke and thc brilliant
sketches or Macaulay, which were freely quoted
from, do not indicate the present character
of the lud?an Government, and wc doubt
not that even the oppressions the Eng.
lish rulers are chargeable with do not
. surpass, If indeed they equal, that of the native
or foreign rule? whom the British lion sent. We

MEDICAL COLLEGE.-At a meeting ol the
Trustees of the Medical College of the State of
South Carolina, held at the Medical College yes?
terday, Professor E. Geddings's resignation from
the chair of Institutes and Practice of Medicine
was accepted. A new chair of Clinical Mediciue
was created, and Professor E. Geddings elected
Emeritus Professor of the Institutes and Practice
of Medicine and Professor or Clinical Medicine.
The chair of General Anatomy and Physiology
was divided, Professor Wm. M. Michel retaining
the department or Physiology, and Dr. F. L. Par?
ker, Demonstrator of Anatomy, bring elected to
fill the restored Independent cha ,r or Anatomy.
Dr. J. F. M. Geddings was elected to fill the chair
or the Institutes and Practice or Medicine, va?
cated by his father.
THE OLD POSTOPFICE.-It will be remem?
bered that the Chamber o? Commerce applied to
Congress for permission to flt np the old post
office Tor the purposes of the Chamber. When
the petition reached Congress, it wa3 referred to
the Committee on Commerce, which has not re?
ported. Yesterday, Mr. S. Y. Tupper, while
speaking before the Chamber or Commerce, men?
tioned that he had called upon Collector Clark In
regard to the building, and had been told by
him to write direct to Senator Sawyer, and get
him to usc lils efforts to push the matter. After
this interview, Mr. Tupper called upon another
prominent Radical and came away convinced
that it was best to abandon the idea of getting
possession or the building, which he had recently
examined and round much more decayed and di?
lapidated than he and others thought it was, and
was of the opinion that lt would take from $12,
000 to ?15,000 to put lt in proper order. Collector
Clark was of the opinion that the government
would shortly put it up at public auction.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE-MOVEMI NT TO SE.
CURE A HALI..-An extra meeting of the Cham?
ber of Commerce was held over tho office of C. T.
Lowndes, Esq., at l o'clock yesterday. Robert
Mure, Esq\ presiding.
Berore thc business for which thc meeting was
called was commenced, Mr. nanete! desired to
know what action had been taken relative to the
memorial of the Chamber to Congress, asking for
better postotUce accommodations.
The president explained that, according to in?
structions, he had commnulcated the action or
the Chamber to the Board of Trade, and request?
ed their co-operation, and that the memorial waa
aow ready for the slguutures of the members of
the Chamber.
Arter this explanation, thc president stated that
tor n long time the need or a hall for the meetings
of thc Chamber, lu connection with a reading
room and general exchange, had been sorely felt,
and as taere was a prospector securing such a
hall, the meeting had been called to ascertain the
sense of the members In regard to the subject.
Mr. S. Y. Tupper stated that Mr. Riggs intended
to improve internally and externally his building
at the corner or Broad and East Bay streets, and
had informed him (Mr. T.) that ir lt met the wish?
es of the Chamber, he would convert the whole of
the second story Into a hall, elevate the celling,
and arrange lt generally so as to be adapted to
the wants of the Chamber, and upon
terms satisfactory to lt. In concluding his
remarks, Mr. Tupper stated that there
were about $7000 In the hands of the charity com?
mittee of the chamber, and he thought that
$1000 or $2000 borrowed Dom this rund would bc
amply s?tlclent to fit up the hall for the purposes
to which the chamber might wish to devote it.
He then moved that a committee or three be ap?
pointed to coater with Mr. Riggs upon the sub?
ject, and report on Wednesday next.
The motion was adopted and the president ap?
pointed Messrs. S. Y. Tupper, J. T. Welanian and
F. Poroher as the committee.
The president stated that In obedience to in?
structions from the Chamber, he had called upon
the postmaster herc to ascertain whether or no:
the postoillce box at Messrs. Walker, Evans A.
Cogswell could not, for the convenience of the
merchants, bc kept open a little later at night,
but was informed that up to S o'clock was as.late
