Mackey committed to Jail Venus Cooley and her two sons, who had taken her daughter Susan and beaten her unmercifully. The only excuse orTercd by the mother was that Susan intended to marry against her wishes. TRINITY CHDRCH SUNDAY SCHOOL.-Thc an? niversary exercises of this school will be held to? morrow afternoon at four o'clock. THAT KIDNAPPING AFFAIR.-In our issue of yesterday lt was mentioned that two men had been kidnapped and carried off on the ship Win? throp. These men were not natives of the city, as some Inferred, bnt were from the North, and, though carried on board of the ship as stated, they were not kidnapped, for they had regularly shipped and then refused to go on board. Cap. tain McDonald, the pilot, informs us that he brought no letter from any oue on the ship. "Many of our readers will remember the big Ash tha^was caught near here last December, aud waa kept on exhibition for several days. Since then, its owners have been exhibiting it around the country. At Columbus, Ga., last week, the monster fell into the hands of a constable, who sold its skin for one dollar and a half. Mr. Noble, of Savannah, subsequently bought lt for fifteen dollars, and it will soon be on exhibition at his Broughton street Museum of Natural Curiosities. LECTURES NEXT WEEK.^On Monday, Tues? day and Wednesday-evenings of next week, the Rev. W. w. Hicks, D. D., will deliver three lec? tures In the Academy of Music, upon Interest log subjects. HOLY WKBK.-To-mor? row ts Palm Sunday, ths commencement or what 13 known as Holy or Posion Week, during which ls commemorated the surrerlngs and death of thc Saviour or the world. From very remote times the seven days Immediately preceding the anni? versary of the resurrection of Christ, have been set apart by the church as a season of peculiar solemnity, to be observed by aots of penitence, devotion, fasting and prayer. On Palm Sunday, the Catholic Church celebrates the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem, when the fickle mul? titud^ greeted him with shouts of "hosanna," and thc waving of palms. In Catholic countries on this day, palm? are blessed, distributed and car? ried in procession through the streets and along the roads, -hut in this couutry the clergy and those who serve at the altar only Joni lu the pro? cession along the aisles of the church, and distri? bute the blessed palms to the worshipping con? gregation. The ceremony of bles?lng the palms ls com mcuced by singing "Hosanna la Excclsls." A prayer, asking that the fruits of the passion of our Lord may descend upon the faithful, ts then orTercd; arter which, the priest, asiisted by the sub-deacon, sings a portion of the collects and lessons of the day. The palms are sprinkled with holy water and fumed with Incense, and then distributed to the clergy aud laity, who receive . them kneeling, while au appropriate anthem ls sung by the choir. In the Episcopal and Anglican churches the practice or blessing palni3 bas rallen into disuse but the term "Palm Sunday," and the events it commemorates, continue to be associated to? gether. Daring the week which this day prefaces, Christians are called upon to enter seriously into themselves, to exclude all thoughts of worldly things, and to meditate upon the end ot the great mysteries they are required to commemorate. To this end the ceremonies are ot thc mo3t solemn and imposing character, and the prayers and les? sons are such as to excite humility and repent? ance in the breasts of those who are devoutly In? clined. f AMUSEMENTS. Thc School for Scandal. Tho crowning performance of the present dra? matic season was the comedy of The School for Scandal, as produced last evening at the Acade? my o' Music. Thc sparkling wit of this master? piece of Sheridan's dramatic genius might well cover a deal of indifferent acting; but lt is simple justice to Miss Keene and her company to say that the play, taken as a whole, was one of which Charleston would not have been ashamed, even in the palmy old times, when her people were as rich and prosperous as they are discriminating and cultivated, and when her stage was the acknowledged dramatic centre of the continent. Of course, the features of the performance were the Lady Teazle of Miss Keene, the Charles Surface of Mr. Mordaunt, and the Joseph Surface of Mr. Stuart. The style in which these three parts were acted was simply beyond praise. Mr. Wallis played SirPetcr capitally : and we must say that the Sir Oliver of Mr. Reed (whose high tragedy has not been always to our taste) was very well done Indeed. The whole cast, in fact, was an excellent one; and the dresses ol the several characters was quite rich and elaborate. The house was well filled, and never was play received with heartier zest. For the last two performances of thc season we are to have to-day at the matinee Goldsmith's She Stoops to conquer, and in the evening Our American Cousin.
