Encouraged ' by the splendid success of Humpty Dumpty last week, the Oates combination will this evening present Wallace's beautiful opera \ of "Lurline," with a magni?cence of scenic dis? play far surpassing anything that has ever before been given to a Charleston audience. Every scene ls said te be new and complete in Itself, and the costumes have been prepared with great care and the most minute attention to details. There ls no opera probably which gives greater scope 1 for picturesque and beautiful effects than "Lur? line," and the management have spared no pains I to make its production here a great spectaoular success. The realms of the water nymphs of the Rhine will be peopled by a full corps de ballet, in addition to the regular force of thc company, and the new and glittering scenery will be made more -dazzling by numerons calcium lights. The music -ofthe opera ls delicious, and in the hands of the excellent vocalists of the troupe will receive full justice. We look for an Immense house. Patti. The coming visit of Miss Carlotta Patti to Charleston is creating quite a flutter in musloal circles, and notwithstanding the price of tickets, which we take leave to say is outrageously high, there ls every prospect that her concerts will be largely and fashionably attended. We notice that in Savannah, where she sings to-night, the tickets for every seat in the hall had been sold before the evening of last Friday, the day on wnlch the sale commenced. A similar rush may be expected here. Wyman, the Wizard. After an absence of twelve years, Wyman, the celebrated necromancer, wizard and magician, will visit Charleston and give a series of enter? tainments at Hibernian Hall, commencing on Wednesday, the oth Instant. Wyman's reputa? tion will be sure to give him a full house. There are a number of oar people who recollect his for? mer visits, and who will gladly renew their ac? quaintance with him. The Thespian Dramatic Corps Is the title of a band of young Charlestonlaas who have formed an organization for the encourage? ment of amateur theatricals. On Saturday eve? ning the corps gavt an entertainment at Holmes' Lyceum, which embraced three pieces. The young actors acquitted themselves admirably, and mer? ited the applause that was bestowed on them. SUDDEN DEATH.-Mr. Isaac Woolfe, an old a:i^r respeoted citizen, died suddenly on Satur? day, aged eighty-nine years and six months. THE SAVANNAH RAILROAD.-The first through passenger train will run to Savannah this morn? ing, leaving St. Andrew's terminas at 9 o'clock. The trains will hereafter run regularly through to Savannah, and the Forest City and the City by the Sea bc once more united with Iron bonds. PERSONAL.-Mr. George C. Wilfong, the late local of the Savannah Newsr who was badly beaten in February last by two young men of Savannah, died in Philadelphia on Sunday last from the ef? fects of the injuries then received. Mr. Wilfong was a younf man of fine talents and a pleasing , writer. THE SOUTH CAROLINA RAILROAD AND THE CITY OF AUGUSTA.-The Augusta papers announce that President Magrath, of the South Carolina Railroad, had u conference with the municipal authorities of that city, on Friday last, in regard to certain street repairs to be made by the road, and that the matter was adjusted to the satisfac? tion of all parties. SEAL OLEUM ls the title of a patent cure-all medicine, sold by an olly-tongued perapatetlc philosopher, from the seat of his carriage, at the corner of King and Market streets. A great at? traction and a powerful aid to the sale is the presence of a live seal, from Labrador. The en? terprising owner of the seal has ten of his com? peers travelling In different parts of the country In charge of the sale of his wonderful oil. CRUMBS.-The new stalls recently erected In the Fish Market are vast Improvements on most of those that were transferred rrom the opposite sitfc of the street. The raid on the nnlicensed shopkeepers still -continues, and the city treasury ls enriched by thc fines imposed. The time for making city returns is limited, and taxpayers are warned that an additional penalty will be imposed on delinquents. EXPLOSION AND LOSS OF LIFE.-The boiler of the steam engine connected with the Charles? ton Mining and Manufacturing works, about fif? teen miles from the city, exploded on Saturday morning. A colored man named BenJ. Rivers, who was standing In the rear of the boiler, was instantly killed, and Benjamin Barnwell, a color? ed fireman, was seriously injured. The latter was brought to Charleston and taken to the City Hos? pital, where he died yesterday morning. Coro? ner Whiting was notified of the accident, and held an inquest over Rivers, at the company's works, on Saturday. The principal testimo? ny was that of the engineer, Mr. Ernest Guerick, who stated that two ef the flues of the boiler collapsed, causing thc explosion. Both -ends of the boiler were blown out, demolishing the brickwork and tearing down the adjoining tunees. There was not nfty-flve pounds of steam cn at the time, and the steam gauge was regu? lated at seventy-five pounds. The two men who were killed were standing lu the rear or thc boiler, and were injured principally in the head and up? per part or the body. The accident occurred about o o'clock In the morning, an hour when but few persons were about. If lt had happened later, a large number would have been killed or wounled. Mr. Guerick ls represented as being a good engineer and remarkably careful. * -0 ADDRESS OK DR. CHISOLM IN BALTIMORE_ The Baltimore papers contain extended accounts of the sixty-third annual commencement of the Medical Department or the University or Mary? land, which took place on Tuesday last. The classes ef this institution equal, if they do not ex? ceed in number, those of any other Southern in? stitution of midical learning. After the gradu? ates of this year, forty-four in number, had re? ceived their diplomas, the valedictory address was delivered by our former townsman, Dr. J. J Chlsolm, now a professor In the University. The Sun, tn reporting his remarks, says: He commenced by congratul?t lug the students upon the reception of their diplomas from the University of Maryland, which, said he, entitled them to rank among the physicians of the world. He told them that their duty was to rejoice with I the strong, protect the weak, and sympathize with the aitllcted, assaage pain, bind up the ?wounds of the suffering, and quiet the misgivings of the anxious. He then went on to advise them to continue to study; that the education of a phv sician was never completed. Labor, said he. ls the chief element In acquiring success. The diplo? ma, said he, which you have received this day does not Impart to you all medical knowledge; it only makes you the member of a learned profes? sion. He then warned them against the seduc? tions that would tempt them from their profes? sion. The laws of professional conduct, said Dr. Chlsolm. are the laws or merallty, of honor, abd of courtesy. As the character and position of the profession to which you belong will be elevated or depressed according to your qualifications, so will the status which you assume in society reaet upon the place or your early professional train? ing. The choir was rein? forced by some or thc best amateur singers in the city, as well as by Mr. Allen, or thc Academy or Music, whose rich, deep voice produced a marked effect in the solos and concerted pieces. The gems were the Salve Regina and Tantum Ergo, sung at vespers by a lady whose grand voice, and pure Italian method, were never displayed to bet? ter advantage. Kinsman ? nowell: GENTLEMEN-Having received your communi? cation or September 7th, asking ror an explana? tion in regard to the condition or my crops where Mapes' Superphosphate or Lime was used, I can cheerfully say that your superphosphate or lime increased my crops at least one-third, especially in my low lands. It gave my cotton a healthier color, and lt grew beyond all the cotton I had the first of the season, and I am satisfied lt put my crops at least two weeks in advance or crops that were planted without the phosphate of lime. I think lt has a tendency to warm, enrich and sweeten the land, especially where it has soured from want or thorough draining, and especially on these low lands that have never been thorough? ly sub-soiled. My cotton was rar In advance or any cotton about me where the Peruvian guano was used, and while the Peruvian guano, in thc heat of the summer, burnt the cottcn, Mapes' Su? perphosphate of Lime kept the cotton growing fresh and healthy. I did not use it ou any but my cotton laud; I don't know what effect lt would have with corn, but 1 believe lt would be the best manure we can have on these low lands.
