VIGILANT FIRE ENGINE COMPAXT.-At the firty-flrst anniversary meeting of this company, held on Tuesday evening, the following officers were elected to serve for the ensuing year: L. D. STREET IMPROVEMEHENTS.-Exchangft street, leading from East Bay to South Atlantic wharf, and a highway of tratic for passengers and freight to the Savannah and Florida steamers, will soon be furnished with an asphalt sidewalk by Captain A. Habenlcht, the contractor for the work. Cap? tain Habenicht has nearly eompleted the side? walk at the corner or East Bay and Broad streets and ls now preparing the materials In order to commence work on his new field at an early day. A good sidewalk has been sadly needed in that .section for some time. THE SISTERS OF MBRCY.-Sister M. Xavier, .of this city, we learn, will soon leave for Wash? ington, to again petition Congress for aid in re? building the orphanhouse destroyed during the late war. The petition is signed by Governor Scott and nearly all the members of the Legisla? ture. It ls also accompanied by letters from a number or Dnited States arrayo filcers, testirying to the kindness and attention paid them in their confinement in this city. Congress can certainly afford to grant this small boon to the petitioners, and we trust it will be reseived with tavor. LECTURK OX TURKEY.-The Rev. Arthur Dogdon gave another interesting and instructive -lecture at the music hull or the Academy or Music last night. As on the previous occasion, the hull was crowded, and the reverend speaker fouud no .difficulty in retaining thc full attention of his hearers. "Life and Sceues in Turkey," "Thc East? ern C&urches," and "The Great Kastern Ques? tion," were the subjects chosen by tlie lecturer for the series, and the exercises have on each day been agreeably diversified by the skilled touches or Mr. Withers on his cremona. The lecture to? night will close the present coarse. AURORA BOREALIS.-The unusual display of electrical or northern lights was witnessed early yesterday morning, In all its brllliaacy, by 6ome gentlemen who were out on a hunting party, a few miles from this city. It was before day? break, and the sky was cloudless when the atten? tion of the spectators was riveted by the grow? ing brightness of the horizon, and the streams or light that shot forth toward Hie zenith describing an arc or surpassing brilliancy. This phenomenon .ls seldom witnessed In our mild southern lati? tude, and as it is rarely seen, except In extreme cold weather, it is thought to portend some chauge in the atmosphere. LECTURE BEFORE TUI: CHRESTOMATHIC SO? CIETY.-The Rev. James Vf. Miles, Professor ol Languages in the Charleston College, lectured last night to the Chrestomathic Society, on thc Ro? man Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The lecture was ?dellveredln the College Chapel, which was well at? tended. The speaker referred to the life and times .of the Emperor Aurelius, and gave graphic des? cription of the empire under his sway. Though the subject was apparently not one that was cal ciliated to Interest a modern audience, it was treated by the lecturer in such a manner as to Interest hts hearers, and was replete with infor? mation not found In a general course of study. CRUMBS.-The fire company recently organ ized in ghester have made overtures to the Stone? wall Fire Company, of this city, for the purchase of their machine. Thc latter company have or? dered a steamer, and will soon have no usc for their present hand eugine, which is one of the best in th? department. A Columbia correspondent states that General John B. Dennis has been ordered by the Governor to proceed to Tutt nud Wilson's precinct on Four Mile Branch, Upper Three Runs, Barnwell County, to take charge of ninety-six stands of arms ih thc possession of W. Ncwnios, who is considered an improper person, lt is understood that this has been done at thc urgent solicitation of the in? habitants. THE CHARLOTTE, COLUMBIA AXD ACOCOTA RAILROAD.-Colonel William Johnstone, the presi? dent of this company, has been in this city for some days,and has perfected arrangements where? by thc bonds of the Charlotte and Columbia and Columbia and August a Railroads are redeemed by? an exchange for first mortgage bonds of the con? solidated road. The securities are represented as one of 'he safest investments ever offered, as the bonds bear ?even per cent. Interest, payable iu Jauuary a?d Oul%, and are amply secured by a mortgage of property that cost per mile more than three times thc amount of the bonds former? ly issued by the two companies. In order to fund the floating debt of the company, $50,000 of tlie bonds above mentioned are now offered for sale in Columbia at PO cents on the dollar. ?BBE MASKED BAU..-Thc masked ball to be given to-night at thc Hibernian Hal! by the Freundschaftsbund promises to be a signal suc? cess. lt is the lirst of the setteon, aud every care has been taken by the managers to make it per fect in every detail. A railure to comply will result In ejectment from Hie hall. A general unmasking will be required at twelve o'clock, and before that time no one will be allowed to enter unless masked. There will be no sale of tickets at the door, but persons will be in attendance to preserve order and assist the managers in disposing or the outer apparel. There has been quite a furore for masks and costimes during thc past few weeks, and many doubts and rears have been expressed before thc characters arc selected that will preserve thc wearer Incog. Von Santen's Bazaar and Ash? ton's headqsarters have^been thronged with visi? tors, who, by the aid ot counterfeit races and noses, and raise hair and beard, will disguise themselves from all prying eyes. Thc masque balls given by our German rellow-citlzens are always noted for a superabundance or run and an entire absence or any thing that would cloud the merri? ment. The Freundschartsbund have enjoyed a lengthy experience in masked balls, and that given to-night is expected to bc one or their best. THE ASHLEY RIVER MURDER.-Friday Nix? on, the elder or thc two prisoners convicted tor thc murder of Dick Richards on the Ashley River on Tuesday morning, made the following con? fession under oath at the Jailor's oillce, and in presence of a number or witnesses: On Thursday, September 30th, I, Friday Nixon, and mj son Anthony and Richards, left Church Flats for this city lu a flatboat loaded with wood. On Friday evening, about 5 o'clock, we arrived at Elliott's Cut, .md stayed there until about mid? night. We then started again, and on arriving at thc mouth of WappooCut, Richards stccriug at the time. 1 and my sou both objected lo cross Ashley River, on account ot the.roughness of the water. Richards insisted on crosslug. and wc went to oblige him. At about one hundred and fifty yards from Chlsolm's Mill, when between two schooners, we got into an eddy, and Rich? ards, who was still steering, snug out that he could sot steer, whereupon I went back aud struok him with two sticks of split pine wood, each about four feet long and six inches wide, sharp on one edge. Richards fell, and when about to rise again I threw the sticks ou him. A ware at the same time washed lato the flat, aud she sunk, and I never nftcr siw Richardsalivc. I and my son were rescued from the water by the crew of one or the schooners. Friday completely exonerates lils son Antho? ny, and stated that Richards did not cry out when struck; that his son could not have seen him, as there was a wood-pile six feet high be? tween them, and the night very dark and boister? ous; and that he never revealed the facts of thc deed to his son. Anthony Nixon, the son, substantiated thc statement or his rather, and both mea ap? pear reconciled to their rate, though strong efforts are being made to obtain the Executive pardon tor the younger. Friday, thc 25th or this month, has been fixed as thc day or execution. ACADEMY OF MUSIC-"THE RIVALS."-DO we love "The Rivals'' more mr bs own sake, or be? cause lt is "the child or its rathor ?" It is hard to decide; for the name and rame or Richard Brins? ley Sheridan would float a far less charming comedy than thc one which contains Hie house? hold words of "Bob Acres" and "Mrs. Malaprop;" or "Lydia Lane .?-.'-" and "Sir Anthony Absolute." It is said, that o.. ..e very night on which Sheri? dan achieved his deathless glory in the House or Commons, by his famous speech on UK Impeach? ment ot Warren Hastings, his "School Tor Scan? dal" was acted "with rapturous applause" at Covent Garden, and h's "Duenna," no less suc cessfully, at Drury Lane. What a triumph tor the boy, whom Dr. Parr called a dunce at Har row ? "Thc Rivals" was his lirst play, lt was written in 1774. It Tailed on Its first appearance, owiug to the bad acting ot the part ot "Sir Lucius O'Triggcr," by Mr. Lee; but the cast was improv? ed ou the second representation, and from that time to this, there has been no ebb in the tide of its success. Without thc striking originality and sustained verbal felicities of the "School for Scan dat," "The Rivals" stands, ecverthclcss, lu the very first class or the acting comedies or thu stage. If thc "Teazles" and "Surfaces" belong to higher school or dramatic art, it must oe ad? mitted that, Tor pointed stage effect, the superiur to "Bob Acres" is not easily to bc round. In Mr. Bishop's hands, thc comic elements or the part are tully utilized and consistently carried out. Mrs. Chapman played "Mrs. Malaprop" re? markably well, though with a little too much con? sciousness or the part; and Mr. Hastings, as "Sir Anthony Absolute," was, as usual, very correct. Mr. Foster's "Captain Absolute" was somewhat better than hl3 "Marlowe." For thc rest there is nothing particular to bc said. The bill for to-night is unusally attractive. Shakespeare's charming "Comedy of Errors" will be produced Tor thc first time in twenty-five years on Charleston boards, with new and splen? did dresses and all the appropriate paraphernalia. Bishop will appear as the real "Dromlo," a part in which his wonderful facial power and comic action will find full play. Shakespeare has al? ways drawn well in Charleston, and the "Comedy or Errors" can hardly Ml to All the house. The new burlesque or "Mazeppa" will also be given.
