Two LAST DATS HERS.-Thc liberal patron onage the panorama of New York City has re? ceived In Charleston must be pleasing to the manager, as it ls welt worthy of the patronage lt U receiving. ACADEMY OF MUSIC-When Dr. Oliver Gold-" smith's comedy of "She Stoops to Conquer" was -produced for the first time, nearly ninety-seven years ago, at the famous Covent Garden, the repre? sentative dramatic critic of the day, Dr. Samuel ?Johnson, said of it that "ID knew or no comedy for many years that had so much exhilarated an audience; that had answered so much the great .end or comedy-that or making an audience mer? ry." The worthy Samuel hlinseir headed a large party or the author's mends and admirers who .crowded to sec the first performance of the play, and led the claqueurs of thc evening rrorn the fr?llt row of,a side box near the stage. The play was Immediately and thoroughly successful, and Di spite of several, very bitter attacks from per? sonal roes of the poet (for even poor lovable "(Joli dy" was not free from the calamities or authors,) the verdict or Johnson ou its merits liai been am? ply sustained by posterity. "She Stoops to Conquer" is founded upon an adventure which befoll the author in his youth, when he mistook a gentleman's house for au inu. Around this central incident are grouped, in ad? mirable harmony, the droll humor or "Tony Lumpkiu," thc amusing eonnublalities or the "Hardcastles," and the charming double love story or the real heroes and heroines or the play, while thc elegance and polish of the dialogue re ?deems the extravagance of the plot from slipping into taree. As produced last evening, the play was fairly successful. Bishop's Tony Lumpkiu was as droll as Goldsmith meant it to be, which ls siyiug ali that need be said. Blanche Chapman ns Miss Hard ?castle was a little lacking in spirit in (he earlier scenes, but warmed up as the play proceeded, and In the barmaid scene played with great .effect. The important role of Uarlowe was given to Mr. Foster, who, though a conscientious actor, was hardly equal to Its varying demands. Mrs. Chapman and Mr. Hastings played excellently as Mrs. and Mr Hardcastle, and the rest of the cast was well sustained. The musical extravaganza ot Jenny Lind Closed the entertainment, and herc Blauchc Chapman was encona most consistently through? out. Tonight, thc rare old comedy or "Paul Pry," which was so well received on Saturday evening, will be repeated, and the burlesque or "Mazeppa" wm be given for the first time. RECS msc STOLEN GOODS.-Wm. McElhose, thc proprietor of a store at thc corner of Calhoun and Wall streets, was arrested on Saturday under a charge of receiving stolen goods. A number of articles alleged to be stolen were recovered, ami McElhose was committed to jail by Magistrate J. G. Mackey, in default of bail, lt was thought that a number of arrests would be made u con? nection with the above. THE MARKET IMPROVEMENTS.-Tito workmen are now engaged in demolishing the old ?nices of weights and scales, public measurer, ?c., at the cud of thc Ash market, and the latter will soon be known only in the memory of thc past, as it is doomed for destruction. The pavement lu the market on thc west side of the street that will bc the new abode or the piscatoral vendors, is now being raised and graded, and thc stalls will ' soon be placed lu position. No special contractor has charge or the work, but lt ls done from plans fur? nished by thc city engineer, and by day work un? der the direction of an cfllcicnt superintendent. IMPORTANT TO AGRICULTURISTS.-Tho neces? sity for improving land by good fertilizers is now generally appreciated in thc South, and our plant? ers and farmers are anxious to learn what brands are suited Tor the different products. The best qualities are found to be those that combiue all the Ingredients needed by vegetable life, and none rank higher than Mapes' Nitrogeuized Su? perphosphate or Lime. This is in such a condi? tion that its phosphates quickly become soluble and are thus made available to the crop. Messrs. Kinsman A Howell arc the agents Tor tills fertil? izer, and samples can be seen and testimonials as to its efficacy produced at their ofllce, No. 12S East Bay. EXODUS OF HA?TIEN CELEBRITIE? -General Prophett, the generalissimo of Sainas J'S forces, General Francois, general of a division, aide-de camp to the President of Hayti, and command? ant of the port and district of Port au Prince, Madame Odetde Jean Baptiste, who is thc mother of General Francois' son, aud thc Rev. Chrysos? tom, private secretary to thc late Salnave, who arrived here on thc French war vessel now in oar port, left by the Northeastern Railroad yes? terday for Washington. Notwithstanding the multiplicity of titles, there were only four In the party, the first three bel..g negroes and the Rev. a white man. lt is supposed that they will lose no time in Interviewing Sumner; though it is somewhat singular that Mrs. Stowe, who is now In Charleston, should have allowed this opportu nlty to escape her of investigating any scandal in the Salnave dynasty. THE REV. DR. W. W. LORD.-This distin? guished divine, who has been rector of St. Paul's Church, Radcllffeboro since the war, has recently resigned lils charge in this city, and will return to his former field at Vicksburg, Miss. The con? gregation have tendered a call to the Rev. C. P. Gadsden, of St. Luke's; but this has been de? clined by that minister, and it is understood that the Rev. James M. Miles will lill the pulpit for the present. Dr. Lord has for nearly ave years been a faithful guide and monitor to the congregation of St. Paul's, and his ministrations have endeared him.not only to his own flock, but to a wide circle who knew his worth as pastor and friend. Retakes with him thc heartfelt wishes of all who have known him in this city for bis future welfare in his rormer home, and his memory will bc cher? ished by the church that he aided so earnestly In the dark days succeeding the war. CRUMBS.-Five persons who thought it a fine joke to turn off the gas in the upper part of the Theatre on Saturday night, have been sent to the workhouse for live days, each to reflect on the error of his ways. A man named Charles Sherman was arrested by Magistrate J. G. Mackey, and committed for trial at the next term of the court, on a charge of bigamy. Mr. J. P. Mosseau has completed an admirable copy of the act incorporating the Longshore? men's Union. It ls done entirely with the pen, and can be seen at the sheriff's office. The colored mechanics will meet this evening, at half past 7 o'clock, as the Military Hall, to hear the report or the committee on the constitution and by-laws. The fines impost d at the Mayor's Court yester? day morning amounted to $12. Martin Brill and Morris Small were arre? ted on Saturday for steating a bag of coffee from ..dger's wharf. Henry Crawford, for stealing a gold thimble, was turned over to a magistrate, and John Shep? ard, Ben Hay nos and James Gallagher, charged with stealing gold watches and a pocketbook, arc held for examination. Henry Chisolm, a noted colored fowl thief, has been sent to the workhouse for two months. Governor Scott has made thc following appoint? ments: R. C. Griffin, magistrate, Edgefleld; J. S. Fillenbrown, magistrate, Darlington; Noah M. Mlshaw, magistrate, Horry; Wm. M. Holy man, notary public for Conwayboro'. And has remov? ed John T. Walker, magistrate, of Spartanburg. The dwelling of Mr. Thomas P. Purse, on Lum? ber street, Columbia, was entered by thieves on Friday night last and robbed or a watch, clothing and other valuables. Manager F jrd had a complimentary beneflt at Augusta last ulght. Thc bill was "Claude Mcl notte"and Ella Chapman. Nell Warner opeus a live day engagement at Augusta to-night. Land Commissioner Leslie received a dispatch on Saturday, communicating intelligence of the death of hts mother, at Phoenix, New York. He went North on Sunday, and will be absent for a few days. GLOVES-FASHIONS AND PRICES.-Harper's Bazaar says that "gloves to be worn with mid? winter costumes are of black kid, delicately em broldered with a solid gold thread that will not tarnish. With two buttons at the wrist, the price ls $3 a pair. The new seamless gloves are com? mended for durability, as they permit greater pressure than gloves of ordinary, make, because they have no seam outside of the fourth Huger to be easily ripped open. Ladles can safely buy a smaller size of seamless gloves than of othei shapes. Adjustable studs of gilt, drawn together by a delicate chain, are prepared for fastening gloves made with but one button. A pair of studs cost fifty cents, and may be transferred from one pair of gloves to another. "Gloves fastened by but one button, and without wristbands, are restored to favor, now that the wrist ls sufficiently covered by the drooping frills worn en cuffs and dress sleeves. Soft elastic kid gloves of this kind cut In the seamless shape are sold for $185 a pair, or $10 50 a half dozen pairs. The laced Duchess gloves that foi merty cost $2 25 a pair are uow $1 so, aud those with eight orna? mental studs on the back are $2. Longer gloves, fastened by two buttons at thc wrist, make thc hand look slender. These are $1 25 in both light and dark shades. The colors chosen ror church and the promenade are the red, Egypt? ian browns, chestnut, stone cray and black. Pink coral and ciW-bluc glo\cs are Imported to wear with dresses of those shades for full evening dress, and with carriage toilettes for visiting, the opera and at matinees. Tinted gloves, scarcely deeper than flesh color, are more fashionable ami more becoming than Ivory-white gloves for evening. The three shades most worn are cream-color, ecru-buff and pale salmon. These are shown, with very long wristlets, fast? ened by three buttons, for $2 50, by four buttons for $2 75, and by six buttons ror $3 26. A novelty la white gloves has stitching or violet, green, and other colors on the back, with a silver thread In point-Russe stitcli ou each side or thc silk stitch? ing. Wedding gloves are snowy white, with crimped silk tassels and silver studs. Velvet mittens, without cuffs, are worn in the carriage for warmth, or are drawn over light kid gloves to protect their delicacy of color. Price $1 50. KUI gloves for skating are warmly lined with plush or lambs-wool; $2 50 a pair. Buff ami white castor gloves, fastened by one button, are 75 couts; mode-colored castors are $1, or fastened with two buttons $1 25. A RADICAL RAID.- Our city was graced (?) yes torday by the presence of Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe and Miss Susan B. Anthony, or Byron scan? dal and woman's rights rame. They were escort? ed around by Mayor P.llsbury, and interviewed the Mayor's Court, Guardhouse and City Hall. Barker Pillsbury, one or the shining lights ot the extreme Radical wing, has already given hts ex? perience among the South Carolina darkies, and thc civilized world arc prepared to receive any statement, however exaggerated, rrom the Stowe ical pen. Decrepitude is the natural accompaniment or old age, but lt may be ameliorated, and the period or entire helplessness long postponed by the judi? cious usc or a healthful stimulant. Physicians, fully aware of this fact, usually recommend mod? erate stimulation when the strength and vigor ol maturity have been suspended hythe reeblencss and prostration which are the inevitable resulLs of declining years. Port wine, gin, brandy and other liquors are often prescribed by medical meu foraged persons, but the impulses which ferment ed and distilled liquors give to thc circulation, and the energy they seem to impart, is transl-^j tory, unless thc alcoholic principle is modified amt quallled by thc presence ot medical tonics and invigorants. Ol all the combinations ot dll ruslve stimuli with the juices of herbs, roots and barks that have ever been administered to the aged and luflrm, with the view of sustaining their waning strength, cheering their drooping spirits and relieving their aches and pains to which they arc subjected, none has been fouud so efficacious, so agreeable aud so permanent in its effects as HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. The differ? ence between the effect or the Bitters and that or a mere excitant, however pure, is the same as be? tween the effect or a sudden and momentary ap? plication or excessive force to a given purpose, and thc result ot a steady, continuous applica? tion or exactly the requistc amount of force to thc same end. The mere spirit or physicial energy produced by a drain (aud which is always suc? ceeded by corresponding depression) never yet hencllttPd any man or woman suffering from physical decay. A cordial like Hostellers Bit? ters, at once soothing aud invigorating, is thc remedial agent, required.
