A policeman calmed his trans? ports, and he was taken to thc Guardhouse in high dudgeon with a community that liked the song as rendered by Blanche Chapman in prefer? ence to his version. MR. PLACIDE'.S FUNERAL.-The funeral rites of Henry Placide, the veteran comedian, were celebrated at old St. Paul's, Kew York, on Thurs? day. The venerable edlflce was thronged with mourners, both from among his kin and thc great play-going world which loved him so well. Rev. Dr. Dix officiated, and thc services were very Impressive. As an evi? dence of the liberality or their hospitality the Re? publican states that full bowls of punch were pro vlded for the guests free at the different hotels .and bar-rooms. To prevent too great a suction, it was adroitly mentioned that none could drink who did not show a proper badge. CHARLESTON TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION, NO. 43. At the last regular monthly meeting of this Union, held on Saturday evening, January 29, 1870, at Masonic Hall, the following officers were unani? mously elected to serve for thc ensuing year, viz: Thos. C. Neville, president; James Ronan, vice president; Wm. J.Moslmanu, recording secretary, rice C. Adams declined re-election; Howard P. Cooke, treasurer; John C. R. Taylor, correspond? ing secretary, rice S. D. Hudson declined re? -election ; George W. Nickerson, sergeant-at arnis. Relier Committee-V. Little, Joshua Burle, George A. Moore, C. Adams and S. D. Hudson. Executive Committee-S. Henry Rodgers, Wm. McIntosh, Wm. N. Faulting, E. Hamlin, James Ronan, ex-officio. Special Committee-James D. Parry, John Carr, Thos. A. Murray, S. H. Gilbert and Theo. F. Havens. Delegate to International Union, T. J. Webb. A NEW AND IMPROVED PAVEMENT.-The Council Committee on Streets have now under .consideration the adoption ol a new composition for street and sidewalk paving, which bids fair to excel anything or this kind yet offered. It is Known as the "Vulcanite Cement," and is equally suitable for streets or sidewalks; has been in use in Philadelphia and other Northern cities for some time past, giving entire satisfaction, and just now the Fairmont Park, In the city named, is being paved with lt. It can be laid over cobble stones, bricks or any other surface, and In one hour be? comes as hard as granite, equally endurable, and possesses the noiseless qualification or the Nichol? son pavement. Our City Fathers, we are inform ed, will have lt tested at the great thoroughfare, corner of Meeting and Broad streets, where the incessant noise of vehicles has frequently disturb? ed their quiet convocations. Dr. L. S. Filbert, of Philadelphia, ls the proprietor and patentee of the Vulcanite cement. THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC ox SATURDAY NIGHT. The double bill on Saturday night drew to the Academy of Music an audience large enough to nu fairly every part of the house. The great fea ture of the evening was rh? "Paul Pry" or Mr. Bishop, who made in that character one or the -decided hits of the season. Peals of laughter greeted his coming in and going out, and at thc .end of the play, loud cries for 11 hop brought the inimitable humorist before thc curtain. Mr. Bishop is always fresh and new, his business is marvellous, and taking him all in all, it will bc a precious long time before Charleston sees his like again. Miss Blanche Chapman as "Phoebe," and Miss Ella Chapman as "Eliza," played with their .accustomed spirit, and Mr. Hastings, (Colonel Hardy,) gave a capital rendering of the role of an inconsequential, Irascible, yet easily-fooled old man. This was the first appearance of Mr. Hastings In Charleston, and he will prove, we are sure, a valuable addition to the company. In "Kenilworth," Mr. Bishop out-did himself, although we stUl thiuic that his great powers are shown to best advantage in unmixed comedy. "Leicester" (Blanche Chapman) was a bewilder? ingly nice young man. The legs or Mr. Kennedy ("Trevilian") became absolutely fiendish in their ? contortions during his burlesque danclug. This gentleman, by the way, is always up to lils work, and always does lt well. "Varney" was made but little of, but the "circus burlesque" brought down the house. The singing was very good throughout. The Chapmans,-"thc tulips of the stage,"-were encored in "M' apparl tutt' amor," and "Shoo Fly" was also encored. A3 we have said before, the dresses In this piece border on the gorgeous, what t' ere ls of them, and the scenery Is both pretty and appropriate. Tlie Very Rev. Richard S. Baker, D. D. j This distinguished divine breathed Iiis last , at ll o'clock yesterday morning, al the parochial residence of St. Mary's Church, in WeiilworWi street. Ur. Baker was born on thc-24th June, 1SO6, of Protestant parents, in the County of Kilkenny, Ireland. After thc death of his father, his mother became a Catholic, aud, while a young mau. Dr. Baker also joined that church. Ile arrived in this city in 1S27, several years after thc erection of Charleston into a distinct and independent see under Bishop John England, lt was his intention to follow some mercantile pursuit, but, upon mak? ing ihe acquaintance of Bishop England, he deter? mined to prepare for the priesthood. Ile accord? ingly studied theology in Bishop England's sem? inary, and was ordained a priest by that renowned ecclesiastic, t'pon his ordination, be became as? sistant pastor ot St. John's and St. Piubar's Cathe? dral, in Friend street, where he remained uutii July 3,1S47, when he was called to succeed the Her. Dr. Lynch, now Bishop of Charleston, as pastor of St. Mary's Church. He frequently ac' companied Bishop England on his missions through North Carolina, and Tor a short time dis? charged the dulles of oflloiating priest at New? born, In that State. He was constituted Vicar General under Bishop England, and, upon the demise of that lamented prelate, was made ad? ministrator of tbjj diocese. He served the press for several years as*cditor of thc Roman Catholic Miscellany, of Marleston, in which position he defended ably and well the cause of religion and morality. As a pulpit orator lie enjoyed a high reputation with his own flock, and, however modest and unassuming, he could not confine within thc nar? row bouuds o^kis own fold a fame which widen? ed with every new display of fervid eloquence, until it was recognized and known wherever learning, sincerity and ardent zeal arc respected or loved. Thc sad, ye: pleasant duty of preparing a last? ing tribute to the memory of thc deceased, must bc remitted to the care of others who knew him longer and more intimately than ourselves. .And yet all who knew him, for never so short a time, learned something to auralre. Them was an elo? quence in hisMong life, a pathos In the last scenes of the sad evenful history, more touching than words of ours could be. The laborious and pains? taking student, thc earnest and ardent priest, thc frugal simple and kindly man, thc orator whose keen Damascus blade never rusted, though sealed by disease to the scabbard-after nn useful and upright lire of more than three score years, sleeps the sleep cf the just. Thc pain and suffering of many months is over and forgotten, and he who so often solaced thc grief of thc heartbroken mother, directed aright the footsteps of the way? ward child, confirmed the doubting and strength? ened the weak, is now himself at rest. TUE FUNERAL. The mortal remains of Dr. Baker, dressed In thc sacerdotal robes in which lie was ordained forty years ago. were carried yesterday evening to St. Mary's Church, Hasel street, where they will lie in state until to-morrow, when thc interment will take place. The clergy and vestry of thc five Catholic Churches, walking in procession, accom? panied the remains to St. Mary's Church, and were followed by two or three thoi land persons. The church was draped in black for thc occasion, and upon thc arrival of the procession the ves? pers for the dead were sung. A requiem High Mass for t he repose of thc soul of the deceased will take place at 9 o'clock to? morrow morning, at St. Mary's Church, immedi? ately arter which thc body will bc lowered to its las; resting place. Thc clergy, and thc Mends anitaoqualntances of the deceased, are invited to be present. CRUMB s .-The ex-city officers-assessors, sheriff and clerk-have commenced suits ror the recovery or their salaries for the past quarter. No action can be taken in their behalf, however, until the decision of thc Supreme Court. We have seen a statement of Captain A. S. Ure's or the ship Hope, just cleared at this port by Messrs. Willis & Chlsolm for Liverpool, by which lt appears that she now carries rrom Charleston J506 bales cotton, weighing 1,073,721 pounds. She las loaded at Mobile with 1872 bales cotton, 1 fveighing 910,262 pounds. Showing an excess .or ?velght In fovor of Charleston or 163,459 pounds. All or the cotton was compressed at the Ships' Press. THE EXCURSION TO NEW YORK CITY.-TWO large audiences, on Satur-lay, again paid their respects to Bullard's Panorama ot New York City, at Hibernian Hall. A catchpenny affair might flourish for one night, but it ls sale to conclude that when an ex? hibition, put before audiences as intelligent as those which have visited Bullard's Panorama or New York City for the past two days, and each time twice a day to crowded houses, lt ls con? clusive at least as to the opinion or the people as a body. But this work or art has met the approval or the severest critics, and ls pronounced good throughout, and splendid In some or its views. The public edifices, hotels, shipping, battery, Staten Island, Sic, are alone worth many times the admission ree. The accompanying lecture by Mr. Norton ls folly explanatory or everything. Persons who have not yet seen it should remember that to-day, to-morrow and Wednesday closes Its exhibitions here. Exhibits each day at 3 and s o'clock. THE REGULAR COMBDY.-Theatre-goers will be pleased to learn that during the present week Manager Ford will produce on the boards those sterling comedies rrom Shakespeare and other dramatic writers that have always charmed the public. The company has been increased by tcv eral effective actors who arc thoroughly posted in these plays. Bishop is as capital in comedy as in burlesque, with a for better opportunity or show? ing his powers, and the broad comicalties that brought down the houses or the past week will now be succeeded by thc regular comedies equally as mirth provoking. To-night we have Gold? smith's grand old comedy, "She Stoops to Con? quer," in Ave acts. This Is fomiliar to every thea? tre habitue, and will be rendered lu a superior style by the present company, lt has been many long years since the Charleston public have wit? nessed a genuine comedy, and "She Stoops to Conquer" will certainly draw a crowded house. Shakespeare's "Comedy or Errors'' is now in preparation, and will bc presented on an carly night, when Bishop will double himself, and two Dromios and two Antipholuses appear to the as? tonished audience. Decrepitude is the natural accompaniment of old age, but it may be ameliorated, and thc period of entire helplessness long postponed by the. judi? cious usc of a healthful stimulant. Physicians, fully aware of this fact, usually recommend mod? erate stimulation when the strength and vigor or maturity have been suspended by the feebleness and prostration which are the inevitable results or declining years. Port wine, gin, brandy and othcMiquors arc orton prescribed by medical men for aged persons, but the impulses which ferment ed and distilled liquors give to thc circulation, and thc energy they seem to Impart, ls transi? tory, unless the alcoholic principle ls modified and qualfled by thc presence of medical tonics and invigorants. or all the combinations or dif? fusive stimuli with thc juices of herbs, roots and barks that have ever been administered to the aged and Infirm, with thc vlcworsustalnlng their waning strength, cheering their drooplug spirits and relieving their aches and pains to which they are subjected, none has been found so efficacious, so agreeable and so permanent in its ctfects as HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. The differ? ence between the effect of the Bitters and that of a mere excitant, however pure, ls thc same as be? tween the effect of a sudden and momentary ap? plication of excessive force to a given purpose, and thc result of a steady, continuous applica? tion or exactly thc requiste amount or force to the same end. The mere spirit of physiclal energy produced by a dram (aud which is -always suc? ceeded by corresponding depression) never yet benefltted any man or womaa suffering from physical decay.
