IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC An old proverb advises the public "to let well -enough alone," but the proprietor or the Academy of Music has not been content In furnishing Charleston with a theatre, but bas already per? fected several improvements that will add materi? ally to thc comfort of theatre habitues, and will make the building more popular than ever. Ad? ditional passages have been cut In the orchestra and dress circles that greatly facilitate the in? gress and egress. Windows are now being open? ed In the north and south walls, and every effort will be made to Improve the ventilation so as to render the theatre a comfortable place of resort in the hottest weather, ?s. neat iron railing now secures thc doorkeeper from any outside pressure, and prevents thc entrance of unauthorized per? sons. The entrance to the vestibule on King street has been greatly improved by the addition of a cornice, and the Academy of Music ls now perfect In every detail. CRUMBS.-A Spanish ?ailor who was confin? ed in the Guardhouse on Monday night, turned on his companion of the* cell and mangled his face and neck terribly with his teeth. Suits have been commenced against several planters of Beaufort for supplies famished by the government. A large number of colored hands have been passing through this city for some days en route for Florida, where they are engaged to work on railroads. The streets in thc upper portion or the city are now receiving thc attention they have so long needed. Wooden curbs have been Tarnished, and thc sidewalks tilled in with earth and levelled. Thc unseasonable weather of the past few days was drowned ont last night by a drenching rain. The one hundred and fourth anniversary of the German Friendly Society will be celebrated to? day. After the business meeting the society will dine at thc Hibernian Hall. The Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows meets to-day, and will elect officers for the ensuing year. Mr. Wm. B. Seabrook, an old and respected planter on John's Island, died suddenly on Mon? day from congestion of the lungs. KING HENRY IV.-The chief attraction at the Academy of Music last night was the reap? pearance on the Charleston boards of Mr. James H. Hackett, who twenty and thirty years ago divided with Cooper the suffrages of our play-go? ing public. The play chosen wu* "The First Part of King Henry IV," in which Mr. Hackett played "Slr John Falstaff," a part with which he ls iden? tified and which he has made pre-eminently his own. lt was evident as soon as Mr. Hackett came upon thc stage that his conception of the charac ter did not contemplate broad lights and shad? ows, or strainings after effeet, but would find Ita perfection in the elaboration of the mauy details which go to thc making up of the curiously com? pounded character or thc rascally Knight. Every word, every gesture, every glanes of the eye, had Us place In the picture, '?nd the whole formed a life-like image of "Fat Jack," full or humor, full .of unction, and fui! of wit. The acting of Mr. Hackett was keenly relished, and the familiar scenes with men in buckram, with Dame Quigley. with the ragged regiment, and with the dead Percy, were welcomcdwith long rolls of applause. The audience entered fully into the spirit of the play, and showed that they knew when ami where to bestow their praise. "Harry Hotspur" is an attractive character .on the stage, and in the hands or Mr. O'Neil full Justice was done to the petulant and arrogant, bat generous traits of the young Rebel. Mr. O'Neil acted with warmth and discretion, and lt was fancied that in his gestures there was oc? casionally a soupcon of the young tragedian who has just left our city. Mr. Wood took thc part of "Prince Hal," playing with life and spirit. The minor characters were acceptably tilled. During the first act Mr. Rose (Poins) fainted and fell on the stage. Tills caused some li ttle de? lay and alarm, but it was soon ascertained that Mr. Rose was recovering, and in the second act he took up thc broken thread and played to the end. When he came upon the stage after his mishap, ho was warmly applauded. Taken as a whole, the play went off remarkably well, and "Sir John Falstaff," as he first showed himself at our Academy or Music, will not soon bc forgotten. King Henry IV will bc repeated .'.his evening. ANNIVERSARY 0? THE PlIONlX Fl UK ENGINE COMPANY.-Thc great event of thereat with the Phoenix boys i.s thc recurrence of their anniver? sary, anti tito occasion is invariably celebrated by a supper. Though the weather was unpropitious, a goodly number of invited guests, with thc mem bers of thc company, assembled at the Market Hall last evening, where a :'ea?t. furnished in Tully's best style, had been prepared. The tattles were arranged around Hie silica of the mom, leaving a clear centre for thc busy waiters. Each seat vas soon filled, and the tempting viands rapidly disappeared before thc vigorous attack. After thc substantials had been removed their place was supplied by thc "flowing bowl,''and glasses were hued and clinked, and toasts offer? ed and drank. Thc following were thc regular toasts of thc evening, which were responded to by the gentlemen whose names arc mentioned: 1. The Day wc Celebrate. sponded lo by P. J. Porcher, Esq. 2. Thc Eire Department. Responded to by A. T. Smythe, president of the Pioneer. 3. Thc Hoard of Kiremasters. Responded lo by a letter from Chief Nathans. 4. Charleston. Responded to by C. \V. Styles. 3. South Carolina. Responded to by R. Dewar Racot, Esq. C. The Press. 7. Woman. Responded to by R. S. Bruns, Esq. Thc regular toasts were followed by volunteers, and thc proceedings during the remainder of thc evening were agreeably interspersed with flashes of wit, song, sentiment and story telling. Jollity reigned supreme, and though the elements were at discord and Pluvias had full sway outside, yet the merry party lu thc Market Hail made the time pass rapidly, and did not sepaiate until their an? niversary day wasnninbcrcd with thc past. At thc regular meeting, held previous to thc supper, thc following ^oflicers were elected to serve for Hie ensuing year: W. A. The Invigorating and trantiuillzlng operation or ilOSTETTElt'S BITTERS is most powerfully de? veloped In cases of indigestion. Thc first effect of this agreeable tonic is contorting and encourag ng. A mild plow pervades thc system, the .hronic uneasiness in thc region or the stomach s lessened, and thc nervous restlessness which characterizes the disease is abated. This improve? ment is not transient, lt ls not succeeded by the return or Hu- old symptoms with superadded Torce, as is always thc case when unmcdicated stimulants are given for thc complaint. Euch lose seems to Impart a permanent accession of Healthful Invigoration. But this is not all. Thc ipcrlcnt and anti-bilious properties of the prepar? ation arc scarcely secondary iu importance to Its Louie virtues, if mere ls an overtlow or bile thc secretion is soon brought within proper limits, and tr tho biliary organ is Inert aud torpid lt is toned and regulated. The BITTERS also promote healthy evaporation from thc surface, which is particu? larly desirable at this season when sudden spells of raw, unpleasant weather arc apt to check the natural perspiration and produce congestion or the liver, coughs and colds. Druggists, although their profit upon lt Ls small, find lt absolntely necessary to keep a preparation fer which everybody inquires, and for which nobody will accept a substitute, it ls to-day the most popular modlclne In the civilized world. Extensively as it is advertised, its best ad? vertisement 1B the beneficial result which uniformly follows Its use. Every bottle sold in? sures the sale of at least haK a dozen more. Un? like other stimulants, it braces and tonifies the system without exciting undue cerebral action, Thc cheering effect which lt produces upon the mind ls not momentary, but permanent. There is no subsequent depression. It docs not, as Ls the case with all other stimuli, beget a craving for ex? citants. On the other hand, lt soothes and calms the nerves, combining, s trangc as the anomaly may seem, the qualities of a sedative aud gentle ano dyne with those of a tonic and lnvigorant. The perfect purity of all Its ingredients, their admirable adaptation to the purposes they are intended to ""subserve, the judicious pro portions ki which they are combined, and the scientific skill with which they arc Wend? ed, render this famous article at once the most potent and the most harmless of all known tonlos and alteratives.
