St. Aubyn'* Faith.
A CHRISTMAS. N. EM OR ?.
"Loyal je serai Mirani ma vie."
I.
Wc stood bj tho window, she and I.
And watched ?he sunset dapple the dells ;
And her voice was as sweet tn laugh and in sigh
As the sound of falrle bells.
II.
The antique room, with its carven oak,
Flushed red in thc yule log's lurid glare ;
And we stood, and never a word we spoke,
As wc watched the death of the year.
ni.
Watched how out of the violet sky
Faded thc smile of thc day that died :
And we turned from the window, she and I,
Thc bridegroom and the bride.
iv.
Without, thc strange dim Hush of thc snow
Grew pallid enough in thc gathering gloom :
But within, through holly anti mistletoe,
Gleamed ruddy the carven room.
Thc flickering light straugc shadows threw
On quaint-cut cornice and grim gurgolle.
Birds of barbaric shape and hue,
And serpents of cunning coil.
vi.
Woven with curions art and chance
In the olden days by some sculptor-hand.
Figures and forms of "the lost Komanoc
Of the sweet Provencal land.
VII.
LuriDg my fancy, and may bc her's.
To the golden days of that knightly line,
When Raoul de St. Aubyn won his spurs
On thc plains of Palestine.
VIII.
We drew the old-fashioned velvet chairs
Still closer into the Christmas hearth,
And I knew tbat she held me, sun.* doubts and
cares,
Her dearest thing on earth.
tl*.
A gentle girl with golden naif,
And chastened light in the great gray eyes,
And a face as tender and pure I swear
As the faces In Paradise.
x.
But still as her arms crept closer yet.
And thc loving eyes looked into mine.
It was not her face that my dim gaze met
In the embers' fitful shine.
xi.
The dragon over the chimney-place
Glares horridly down with its goggle-eyes,
And out of the gloom another faoe
Line a spectre began to rise.
xii.
I thought of a night on an Indian wad,
And a lurid sky and a fiendish shout:
And a dear face, trustful, yet pallid withal,
And wan with a nameless doubt.
XIII.
And a chill in the blood of stalwart men,
And a passion of prayer from godless lips;
A short sharp loving shrift-and then
The hush of a life's eclipse !
XIV.
And God's Light dim in the Christmas sky
That Christmas fierce with the battle-breath
And there on thc ramparts she and I,
And around and between us-death !
xv.
I thought of the gaze on my lost love's face,
Ere the last wild sally that clave the foe;
The kiss on the dead lips' pallid grace
Those Ups that had loved mc so !
xvi.
And I think she was happier too that night,
When under those pitying Indian stars;
Thc hand that she best loved struck In Its might,
And loosed her prison bars.
xvii.
Ay, happier then than I, as I sit
And quaff Love's goble: of Hippocrene,
In the light 01 this fair face, as exquisite
As the face of Magdalene.
XVIII.
F the) Is fair, and loves me well.
And the two old houses arc joined to-day;
For the heir of St. Aubyn weds ever, they tell,
With the heiress of Fontenayc.
e. ? . 3UX'
And never a shadow of doubt shall dim
Those great pure eyes that worship mc now,
She never shall know t he secret or him
Who hath pledged her his marriage vow.
xx.
Bat only ont or the embers' glare,
That other face will shine and rise
That dear lost face with its loose brown hair.
And its soft appealing eyes.
XXI.
But I swear by tue virgin to whose dear grace
That bright young life, was a sacrifice,
I bury to-night my dead love's face
In my living Ethel's eyes:
XXII.
And to this pure heart that has'crowned me
King.
Faithful for aye shall my service be;
"Loyal Je serai let the brave words ring,
"Loyal, durant ma rle." G. H. S.

MANCHESTER. December ll.-COTTON GOODS.
Tlie market has been a good deal disturbed all
the week by the reaction following upon the un?
due excitemeut aud activity lu cotton ii3 well as
manufactured goods during thc previous week.
There has been almost a continuous attempt to
break down the advance In prices obtaiued last
week, and cotton is about .'.id per pound easier
than on Saturday. In some instances yarns and
cloth were easier to that extent on Tuesday, ont
this market seems to hav? recovered fin?mes*
yesterday, and this morning to a considerable
extent, and there seems to be a little more dispo?
sition on tho part of buyers to operate on th2
basis of Tuesday's quotations. Thc aggretrmc
business of the week has not been so considerable
In cloth as in yarns, which have been in ralr de?
mand both on home and foreign account, espec?
ially for thc East as well as lor thc continental
markets. Hard spun coarse counts have ulso
been In request for the gLevant. For 32's water
twist and 30 to 40's weft for the home trade
rather an active demand has been experienced at
the close of thc week.

rjpHE WATT PLOUGH TRIUMPHANT!
This PLOUGH ls now the leading Plough of thc
Middle and Cotton States.
Among thc hundreds of testimonials wc have
from practical Planters and Farmers, we would
call attention to tim following extract from a let?
ter received from Colonel B. G. LOCKETT, of the
large planting firm of Jordan A Lockctt, dated
Albany, Ga.. November 27, l??9:
"Herore clus?ig this letter, 1 cannot refrain from
expressing my siuccre thanks to you for thc lu
vcution of the PEST PLOUGH NOW IN USE. lt
ls thc delight of thc negro. Besides doing tho
best work that I have ever seen any Plough do, it
runs with more ease to tho ploughman, and thc
draft lo thc auimal is lighter than any Plough 1
have ever used.
Your Plough has. already become a necessity
to me, ami 1 would feel ruined without H. I am
satisfied wc have saved, unusually, thousands of
dollars lu mides alone, li is thc Cheapest Plough
1 have ever used, ol any kind or description, and
I am anxious to bring, if 1 can, to the notice of
my fcllow-plantcra, this most valuable Plough."
Colonel Loekettcommenced using ihesc Ploughs
in the spring of lsus. ami now has moro than two
hundred and lilly pst?ffot them on his plantations.
Wc have testimonials as emphatic from leading
planters in North Carolina, South Carolina, Geor?
gia, Alabama and Texas, but Hus will sinllcc for
the most incredulous.
During inc present fall, this Plough has taken
Premiums al Eight Fairs held In Virginia, Norih
Carolina, South Carolina ami Alabama, and re?
ceived thc Highest Ratings al thc Great Field Trial
II Pennsylvania, lu August hist, when more than
Filly But?rent Ploughs were tested.
