ROAD.-Yesterday morning, while the tram that left the city at 8J? o'clock was near the Six-mile pump, the axle of a freight car in the front of thc train broke, and tore up several rails from the track. Fortunately the train was proceeding very slowly at the time, and no damage was done to ^he other cars. The accident caused a deten? tion of nearly three hours. THE HON. OKOROK S. BRYAN, United States District Judge, has returned from Columbia, after a long and arduous session of thc court at that place. T8e term was extended nearly three weeks beyond the allotted time, ando, number of very important cases were heard and adjudi? cated. SHOOTING APN?AT IN GEORGIA.-A difficulty occurred at Dearing, Georgia, en Monday last, resulting ia the death of A. N Uodo and Ellis Adams. The quarrel commenced at the store of Hodo, between Lambert and Adams. Hodo and his brother were shot while acting as peacemak? ers. Lambert then pursued Adams and his brother and shot Ellis Adams, and was himself shot tn thc lip. A. N. Hodo was shot In the breast, killing him instantly; his brother, a one-legged man, was shot In the side, but not dangerously. Adams was 6hot and afterwards had his threat ?ut by somo unknown person. The tragic occur? rence has caused much excitement in Augusta and throughout the county where thc parties were^eR known. ST. PETER'S CATHOLIC FAIR.-This fair has been organized for thc purpose of raising funds for St. Peter's Catholic Church, and ls a deserving ctiartty. Thehall has been tastily arranged and decorated, and thc tables show, besides the usual tempting array of indescribable nick-nacks, a number of useful articles. A fireman's prize is among thc prominent features. Last night tho largo and finely decorated hall was thronged with visitors, among whom were many white Catholics. Thc Catholic clergy, wit rr Bishop O'conner, als? visited the hall, and were received with every mark of kindness and re? spect. Tho orphans of the Catholic Male Orphan Asylum also visited the Fair, and went away with glad hearts and full hands. Wc hope that the Fair, so creditable to thc congregation, will be even better attended to-night than on the pre? vious evenings. CITY LANES.-Tho report or thc Committee ou City Lauds, made on Tuesday night, developed some Important facts concerning the real estate owned by the city. A large portion of this prop .erty had been leased for years at a mere nominal sum, and most of it had been improved by thc tenants during their occupancy. It was deemed but an act of common Justice to allow these per? sons to retain possession, but the terms or the leases wero arranged more in accordance with the appraised value of thc lands, and were con? sequently placed at a much higher figure. Some .f thc Ahlermen thought the Interests or tho city would bc enhanced by throwing these lands into the markctand ottering them for sale 'o the high? est bidder, bot met with a strong opposition as ob? viously unfair to these tenants of the slty, who Im? proved theproperty and erected homes on vacant lota. "Fanchon," we need hardly say, is not an opera or opcrettf, but a domestic drama, into which are Introduced a variety of appropriate, and Inappropriate solos, daos and trios, which enable the company to display their vocal as well as histrionic talent. U.VIVERSITT or THH SOUTH.-A number of thc friends of this enterprise met at Holmes' Ly? ceum last night in response to a call made in thc daily papers. On motion of Colonel D. IT. Rut? ledge, Bon. W. 1). Porter was called to the chair, and in a few remarks stated thc object of the call was to enable the friends of the proposed institu? tion to hear a report from gentlemen who could give full information. Rev. A. T. Porter stated as one of the trustees ha attended the last annual meeting at Sewauce, Tenn,, and was surprised to find that a nucleus had been formed and the school was In active operation, with an attend? ance of 100 boys. Thc institution was located on an elevated plateau, some63 miles from Chatta? nooga, and was delightfully healthy. Soven buildings had been erected and a fair progress made toward thc end proposed. Tho trustees de? cided at that meeting to employ an agent who would canvass the Southern States and urge upon the members of the Episcopal Church thc ne? cessity ef aiding the Institution. Thc Rev. 0. P. Thactara, of Fernandina, Pla., was selected for this important work, and as that gentleman was present he would ask him lo address the nfceting. Mr. Thackara iu response gave a history of thc enterprise from ils inception before thc war to thc present time, and stated that about $2?,0u0 were needed to complete tho buildings and inako the needed Improvement? on the properly.
