As 1 have said, thc accommodation of sleeping cars are a necessity for ladles nud children; gentlemen can, with a blauket and pillow, get ulong iu thc common Irst-Class car, though they should take sleeping cars at least from New York to Chicago, mid from Ogden to Sun francisco, because ou thc two ends of thc route the cars arc crowded, while on Hie Union Pacific Knllroad (from Chicago tn Ogden) the musket- of passen? gers is comparatively small, ut least nt this sea? son, so that the chances of getting two double seats for night travel are very good. The rail? roads arc throughout lu excellent running order, and punctual as to lime. Thc eating atong the route was, I hear, generally poor, nt a price of $1 25 currency per meal. I carried a basket full of provisions and bought a cu,i of very good cof? fee mornings and evenings ulong thc road, and I would advise others to do likewise. Thc Rocky Mountains appear, for the greater patt of thc route, rather like a high plateau than a ridge or mountains with lofty peaks. There perpendicular rocks, hundreds o? feet high, risc ou both sides of thu railroad, so close to thc track that there ls hardly room for a second one-sometimes the rocks hang actually over the mad. The scenery In this portion of the Rocky Mountains partakes altogether of the character or the Tyrolcso Alps. They are, however, far from popular in California; in fact, thu sentiment of stopping their farther immigration seems almost universal here.
