Love in a Cottage. Yes, my Bweet little wife, this is lore in a cottage ? And scanty enough, save tn love, is eur store ; But we'll heed not the makings of envy or dotage That "Love flies the lattice when Want opens the doer !" Por I look in your face, and of Fate I'm defiant ; Brave, brave is the heart that for loved ones must oare. For the battle of life I've the nerve of a giant, And yon ! 0, vour bright eyes are honest and fair I So little we'll care for such adage as that is ; PU work while yon watch till our struggles are o'er, And If you with your bright eyes look well to the lattice, I, love, with my strong arms will safe keep the door ! EOEEION MISCELLANY. -The prejudice against Chinese testimony In California ls founded on the assumption of the utter untrustworthiness of the lower caste Chinamen under oath; and the local newspa? pers which oppose the admission ot the evi? dence of the Chinese In the courts find fre? quent opportunities for vindicating their posi? tion on this subject. A few days ago a China? man made a murderous assault, with an iron Oar, upon two of his countrymen. He was held In bonds of $1000. Subsequently lt was ascertained that two of the bondsmen, who made oath in court to their legal respon? sibility for the sum named in the bond, were not worth, a Chinese "cash," above their law? ful liabilities- which latter amounted to noth? ing, for the reason that they could not get Credit from their own countrymen. It seems that the officers of the courts find it quite im? possible to escape these impositions. -An English paper says: "Some French restaurants offer meals at a fabulously low price. For instance, a bowl of soup, a plate of meat and vegetables, dessert. half a bottle of wine and bread ad libitum-all for seven pence. How the keepers of these eating houses make them pay is a mystery which those who patronize them do not care about solving. Of. course the eatables are not of first-rate quality, and one must dine somewhat on the principle of shutting your eyes, opening your mouth, and taking what is sent you. It appears that there are a class of men who get their living by going round to the swell mansions and buy? ing i p the leavings. These men are called "Jewellers," and the leavings go by the gene? ral name of "Jewels"-a piece ol' fowl being "a pe.irl," a plate of game "a diamond," beef a "ruby," and so on. If Plutus gives a ban? quet to-night, the "Jeweller" comes down to? morrow morning and carte off thc leavings from his lordship's plate to some cheap restau? rant, where they are speedily transformed into most tempting-looking dishes, with most blgh soundlng names. The richest "Jeweller" ls he who possesses the monopoly of the Tuileries, from whence, lt is said, a van-load af odds and ends ls packed every day." -A new tunnel under thc River Thames, near the Tower, and for that reason called the 'Tower Subway," ls In process of construction. When lt is completed, a small rotunda-like building on Tower Hill, close to Lower Thames street, will receive the passengers. No tickets will be Issued, for the conductor of the omni? bus or carriage below will collect thc fares. The passengers will descend a spacious shaft often feet in diameter and fifty-six feet deep, by means of a "lift," such as is used in the great hotels. Second-class passengers will go down first, and will remain on the platform at Hie bottom of thc shaft during thc half minute or so necessary for the descent of thc first class passengers. The latter will immediately pass into the comfortable and commodious car? riage awaiting them, something between a railway carriage and the better kind of omni? buses; they will be followed by tho second class passengers,, and the vehicle will immedi? ately start on its Journey. The transit will bu made In about a minute. Arrived on the other. side, the first-class passengers, 'who will be nearest tho shalt, will take their places In the "llfV mid will be brought to the surface In about three-quar^rs of a minute. The "lift"' will then descend ?or the second-class passen? gers, and when these are brought above ground, the single "carriage below will lie ready for its return journey. The omnibus is constructed* to carry fourteen passengers. The tube only contains a single line of rails, and as a single carriage only will be employed, all rink of collision ls ont of the question. With regard to the whole time of transit. ?boot three minutes will suffice to convey pas? sengers from their arrival ut tuc station to the otherside of the river. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Queen Victoria and Her Man Brown. George Wilkes, editor of thc Spirit of the Times, write* fan his Doner a descriDtion ol th* formal opening by the Queen of the new Black friar's Bridge, London. The pageant, with all ito flourish of programme, was a burlesque aflalr, suggesUng a scene from Opera Bouffe. Se Bays: Nothing, certainly, could have been more lu dicrons than the appearance of the Lord Mayor and his suite, while the Queen herself, evident? ly very much out of humor and quite peevish from several momentary balts, did not look un? like "ur old Wend. Madame losten in one ef her most unfavorable moods. I had a good look at her Majesty, for she passed within ten feet of where I sat She was in deep mourn? ing, wore her widow's cap, but was robust, andlt may be said, looked well preserved. Beside her sat the Princess Louisa, and in front the Princess Beatrice and Prince Leo? pold, But the most distinguished looking person? age In the procession was the Highlander, John Brown, an attendant ol' the Queen, and whose avrtklng resemblance to Prince Albert has so commended him to her favor as to ex orte much scandal. He eat in the coupe of thc royal barouche on the side toward me, and I had 'quickly noticed him as the finest looking man in the whole precession. He was dressed in lull Highland costume, the chief garment of which was a rich black velvet tunic, with a tat tan sash of exquisite colors falling obliquely over the breast and back. He wore a bonnet w iiliu cook feather, which sat Jauntily, upon the head, and his arms were folded with an easy air, as If he felt he had no superior in the sur? rounding audience. He sat directly over the back of the Queen, and was the nearest to her person. I had no idea who this conspicuous figure was. and set him down at once as some Scotch nobleman of great regard ; but as the carriage passed, I heard a lady near nie say : "She had much better had left him at home !" "Yes." said the lady who was thus addressed, " I think so, too." It would have shown much more respect for public opinion ! The dissatisfaction in the Queen's want ol' respect for public opinion, in bringing John Brown ont with her on this occasion, culmi? nated In her being hisset} by thc crowd at thc Paddington station.
