Hut it should be said that the one hundred and twenty adults living in thai ft inoto village of Indiana, kuc^^nd cared nothing nbout the case, and Unit the de serted husband bad no opportunity of de fence. So far as Mrs. McFurtand is con cerned, she cannot be held blameless, for the divorce was tin Illegality, und was se cured for the purpose of facilitating her union with '"her husband's friend." As to llicb nrdson, who is now in his grave, the evi dence protty clearly shows that ho had so licited and won the affections of bis friend's wife before any separation had taken place; and he pursued, with an eagerness which Mrs. MeFarland herself was constrained to moderate, his purpose of making her his own. Regarded from whatever point of view, the case was an ugly one. The min istry had nothlna to do with it except as they are ofllcially appointed to "call sinners "to repentance.."* It was n horrible outrage when they appeared, in their robes of sanc tity, to bless an affection which has cast a gifted genius into a V . V ? "* which i?.MS'lWd the lmi,l.;..?ooTsji a beautiful, acco'.walJs.b?ail woman, ami which is likely to bring n wretched husband to the gallows. This case is taken out of the ordinary class of crimes by the circumstance that till who have acted in it from first to lust belong to the Republican party, and are representa tive members thereof. The humblest of j them nil in station wns MeFarland, who was first in the provost marshal's olllcc und then received an appointment lo the custom house. His wife was employed as contribu tor to the Independent. Ills "friend" Rich ardson was an editor of the Tribune. So was his wife's fournie friend and adviser, Mrs. Calhouit. No less a person than Vice President Colfux welcomed Mrs. MeFarland, on her divorce expedition to Indiana, and introduced her "lo the best society in In dianapolis." The card which introduced Mrs. McFarlttnd'a female friend lo lleecher, bore the signature of Horace Greeley. The two ministers who performed the public con secration of the bigamy are among the most distinguished men of the parly. In short, the terrible burlesque was an act of domes tie "reconstruction," to which Republican ism lent its greatest names. There was n iiinrshiilling of the clans, a grand magnifi cent uprising?Yicc-Presidcnt, editors, secu lar mid religious, mule and female, and min isters, orthodox and hctorodox?for the vir tuous, glorious, nny sublime purpose of taking away n wife from her husband and giving her to another man. Hank after rank, with civic trophy und sacred sign, they threw themselves, body und soul, into Unit grand conflict ; nnd when it was over, one, perhaps the noblest of Ihetn all, lay dead in the arms of victory, u heurt-broken woman ut his side, and in the prison house there wns one miserable blood-stained cap tive, wringing his hands and louring his hnlr und gibbering in his mad anguish. Grcal is the honor of the conquerors ! They have reconstructed a fumily in a way just as legal, just ns moral, and just us successful as that in which they have reconstructed the .Southern Stutes. The Tribune, in Us issue of the 1Mb iiistuni, is particularly mid justly severe on what nre called Southern loyalists. One of | this sweet set?the Hon. Mr. Ulnckburn resldes in the Parish of Claiborne, Louisiana, which he represents in Congress. He is also editor of the Hind, "the olllcial jonrunl of | the United Stntes," from whose tripod he de nounces his opponents as "buzzards," "boltle-bolllcd toads," "skunks," "hogs," "dogs" and the like. "The inference may "be drawn," says the Tribune, "that It is "ns necessary for a Republican to i>c as "dirty in Louisiana ns n Democrat in Ncv "York. Heaven help Ihe negroes if thoy* "are to take their primary lessons in clvlll "zotioH and rellncment from such an educa tor and champion !" Another loyalist de nounced by the Tribune Is the Hon. John A. Wimpey. oft?eorgia, who, "last September, "sent lo Noyoa & Co., No. So Wall street, "#l()Ofor a quantity of coiinterfcibjdlls, and "got nothing in return but some old news "papers, a stove, and a promise that if ho "would keep. cool, the bills would soon bo 'sent, 'f have been keecping cool,' he "writes, 'ever since, but thoy have not come. ' "Mr. Wimpey declares that ho ia 'true bhto,' 'that Wogan's letttor (offering counterfeit "greenbacks) 'has tho ring of the true "mctul,' ami that with his inlluciiee lie can " 'innke u big ttalngOUt of it.' It is- n great "pity Unit Mr. Wimpey (whose scot; is con "lostod) is not n member of Congress." Thus gaily docs Grecloy flout ut the Southern loyalists, flout and jeer at the shameless ronogmles, whom \vi, with Colfax and Itlchnrdson, and Mrs. fjalhoun ami Mr>. MoKarland, ami Bcechcr ami Frotltiiighuin, have mtttlc tho legislators of these States, or Utc tnemhers of the national Congress. Hut henceforth Brown und Blodgelt, and Mackoy aud Moses, have a hold upon Grecloy & Co. They can say. stay youv Ii - !s, gentlemen; we uro all |tlayitig tho ?ante gait e, and wo need not Interfere with each other; wo are nil tarred with tho same stick, aud wo need not blacken each other ; wo all live in glass j houses, anil wo need not throw stones at each other; wo nil form one party, and I "from the crown of tho head to the sole of the foot there Is no soundness in it, bat I "only wounds and bruises und putrefying -oivs." Change of Dasc. Tiie Newark Journal says, that at a lute religious mooting in Trenton, N. J., Rev. Mr. Kennedy called on a Mr. Noble, a well known Abolitionist, just returned from a visit to the South, to toll Iiis observations und experience. Mr. Noble said: If he had known as much in iho past of the true character of the black race as he knew through Ids vlfil lo tho Southern spates, his comtact might have been different. Wliilo H?here, lie took notice of what lie saw and innde Utqiilrica everywhere. The black people were nut ns well prt' as previously, und they wore so thriftless Hull if they gol a dollar Ihey spent H In gewgaws and littery Instead of pr^TFP.ug for their nctttul necessities. He said I hey would not work steadily nlong, and cotivcj tl I he Idea that I here was little hope of their i ?vallon." Add to this what Mr. I'illsbury says; and let all honest Uepubllcnns prepare to rolract their calumnies of so many years' duration, niul admit that the Democracy wore in the right oy. the terrible issues of Utc past. To this complexion it must come ul lust. Wo Ljiave already published a part of I'illsbuiy's "otter from South Carolina. i-'.wco then he pas given further testimony which will hi torost the Abolitionists, of which Darker Pillsbury was a leader for so many years. Speaking of tho etlccts of reconstruction, he says: A majority of iho Legislature of South Carolina arc colored mon. arid ninny of thorn can neither write nor read. Rut several of their host friends assured me Hint they should nover support such again for the sake of tho colored race itself?not even lo save the Stute from the Democratic party. Such a burlesque oh the name of government, they declared, was never before soon. 1 have witnessed enough myself to easily understand that it may he so At the opening or tho session col ored voles were easily bought ul live dollars, though later tho;- rose on their price." The Bone mu. Tlio speech of Senator Corbin in favor of what is familiarly called the " Rone Hill," was both plnusihle und ingenious, and it must bo admitted that the great* apostle of Monopoly is consistent in defending for others what ho practices for himself. Tho senator who monopolizes the sweets of ut loasl half, a djMvo Plltctsf. "? '. - ? --? duiiuiursio giant to it few respectable gen tlemen, it monopoly of phosphate mining. In one respect, however. Mr. Corbin is not .consistent. Ho urges as n reason why the phosphate monopoly should bo granted, Hint it requires groat capital to mine phosphates successfully, and yet denounces, those who have already employed capital for the pur pose, and who so employ it still. Why it is necessary lo give one set of capitalists a monopoly of the river phosphates, becnuse another set of capitalists have boon mining those phosphates without paying a roynlty, which 1ms never been demanded of them, Mr. Corbin does not condescend to explain. The Bone bill will come up again after the recess, and we nrc assured that the rep resentatives of the companies now engaged in the phosphate business will thou exhibit lo the Legislature the true history of tho dis covery and working of the pho3putic de posits, and will lie able to show the injus tice of monopoly anil tho justice of free trade. Mr. Corbin in his speech on the "Boue "Bill," sought to justify his Monopoly by n plausible suggestion that the South Carolina Railroad Company had been given "exclu sive privileges," for the purpose of induc ing capitalists to build the road. The only privilege that the company has, besides its exemption from taxation, is the sole right to build and operate a railroad within cer tain narrow limits. If the South Carolina Railroad Company enjoyed the exclusive right to build and operate railroads in the ir/iole State, then, and then alone, would it be a monopoly of the same class as the "Bono BUI." S The barn and stables of Mr. Bonj. R. Cockrell, near Blackstock, wore burned by an incendiary on Thursday night. Governor Scott will please isstto that proclamation. A thousand dollars reward will do, as Mr. Cockrell is a white man. *** (Eotutitional. HIGH SCHOOL OF CHARLESTON.? The Exercises or this Instltniion will be resumed on Mos ha v. January 3d, 1S70.
