islature who would vote to cede to the Federal

?The particulars of Mr. Stunton'a death are as
follows: On Thursday he complained of his sick
ness, but his family were not nliirmed as Ion fatal
restait, as ho had apparently been in a worse ron
dtllon previously. Shortly after midnight Ids
symptoms became nlnrmlng. Surgeon-General
Harnes was present on his accustomed visit, but
found it impossible, (o afford relief. Rev. Dr.
Siarkle, of the Church of the Epiphany, Protes
tant Episcopal, of which Mr. Siunton was n mem
ber, was summoned, but shortly afterward the
sufferer lost consciousness and was unable to cor
verse with any one. The pulsation of his heart
ceased for a few seconds and Ilten returned, his
breathing being very faint. It was not until half
an hour before hlsdenih Hint his family could real
ize that he was dying. About three o'clock hi

This case is taken out of the ordinary
class of crimes by the circumstance that all
who have acted in it from lirait lo last belong |
lo the Republican parly, and are representa
tive members thereof. The humblest of
them nil in station was McFarlaild, who was
first in I he provost marshal's olHce and then
received an appointment to the custom
house. Ili.s wile was employed as contribu
tor to the fmfcixmdtHit. Ills "friend'' Rich
ardson was an editor of the Tribu nr. So
was his wife's female friend ami adviser.
Mrs. Calhonti. No less a poison than Vice
President ColfttX welcomed Mrs. McFurland.
on her divorce expedition to Indiana, and
introduced her "lo the host society in In
"diannpolis." The card which introduced
Mrs. McFitrhmd's female friend to Hcecher,
bore tin signature of Horace Greeley. The
two ministers who performed the public con
secration of the bigamy are among the most
distinguished men of the parly. In short,
the terrible burlesque was an act of domes
tic "reconstruction," lo which Republican
ism lent its greatest names. There was
marshalling of the clans, u grand magnifi
cent uprising?Vice-President, editors, secu
lar ami religious, male and female, anil min
isters, orthodox and helorotlox?for tlie vir
tuous, glorious, nay sublime purpose of)
taking away a wife from her husband and
giving her to nuother man. Hank after
rank, with civic trophy and sacred sign,
they threw themselves, body mid soul, into
(hat grand conllict ; and when it was over,
one, perhaps the noblest of iliem all, lay
dead in Ihe arms of victory, a heart-broken
woman at his side, and in the prison house
there was one miserable blood-stained cap
live, wringing his hands and tearing his
hair and gibbering in his mad anguish,

posits, and will, he able to show the injus
tice of monopoly and the justice of free trade.

Railroad Company bad boon given "exclu
