ATTIMPTBD ROBBERY.-On Wednesday night, sorao enterprising genius spied some coverUds near the door of Messrs. J. G. M ila or A Co. 's auc? tion store, on Meeting street. A small pane of glass was soon broken and the thief unsuccessful? ly endeavored to draw one of the coverlids through the net work of Iron rods that guard the Interior of the door. After mach tugging, which J only resulted in tearing the coverlid, the would be thief was compelled to depart, cursing the man that invented such strong fastening. BEAL ESTATE SALE.-Mr. Z. B. EDWARD SOOTIIWORTL*.-We are pained to announce the death of the Hon. Ed? ward Southworth, of Springfield, Mass., which took placa on Saturday last. Mr. Southworth waa a native of Pelham, a graduate of Harvard -College of the class of 1836, having for hU class-' mates such men os Richard Hlidreth, Dr. Nehe? miah Adama and Samuel H. Walley. He was fa? vorably known for many years to our citizens ss ? teacher in Charleston, and lt may be remem toe red that when on a visit here a few years ago, he was complimented with a dinner by his sur? viving pupils. Upon his retara to Massachusetts he became Interested In paper and cotton manu? factures, and acquired a Urge property. He held many officers of trust and responsibility, such as the trusteeship of Amherst College and Mount Holyoke Seminary, and had long been a director in the Agawam Bank and the Fire and Marine Iu anranoe Company or Springfield. Last night the Academy of Music was as full as on thc .pening day. Every Joke went off as sharply as a firc-cracker, and the local hits, tonching the Radical friends of TUE CHARLESTON NBWS, were as welcome as daisies to a cow's mouth or this? tles to a Charleston donkey. Blanche Chapman as Ganem (gain-cm and keep-em, loo,} was os bright as a sunbeam and as piquante and effervescent as the choicest vintage of the Cllcquotian widow. Ella, as Morgiana, twinkled to and fro like a cluster of firs-nies, ard acted and sang with her usual brilliancy. Bishop was huge, tremendous, Cyclopean, a Pelion on Ossa of mer? riment and run. The singing was capital, thc medley being encored four times and almost five. And the Charleston donkey behaved beautiful, .but sniffed at the stage gross in a way thai show? ed a vile suspicion of fraud. The whole performance was the most success? ful that the company has ever given, and it will be a source of gratification to the public if Mana? ger Ford will play twice more, on Saturday these "Porty Thieves," two o? whom at least de their delicious best to steal orr hearts away. To-night we are to have the "Serious Family," with Bishop os Aminadab Sleek, and Jenny Lind. This is the benefit night of thc "Goliath of Mirth." Let him have a bumper ! TESTIMONIAL TO MR. JOUJi CUADWICK. Since the commencement of the Academy of Music the public interest in thc undertaking has never wavered, and when its completion was an? nounced and it became evident that thc drama had not lost its wonted charms, thc community of Charleston felt the debt of gratitude that was due Mr. John Chadwick, the energetic projector of thc enterprise. A committee was formed among the citizens and a subscription list opened. This was rapidly filled, though each donor was limited to a stated amount, and a magnificent silver service was purchased from Messrs. W. Carrington & Co. and presented In au unostentatious manner to Mr. John Chadwick, on Tuesday last, at the Mills noose. Thc service consists of nine pieces, a waiter, water pitcher, teapot, coffeepot, hot water pot, sugar dish and tongs, milk pot, gob? let and slop bowl. They are all of solid silver aad beautifully chased and ornamented, and on each is the Inscription : "John Chadwick: From the Citizens or Charleston, December 1, 1800." The set is valued ut $1000, and is one of the most ap? propriate testimonial! that has ever been pre? sented. Few persons could have done more to build np Charleston, and the offering of the citi? zens ls but a faint expression of their feelings. The Academy or Music is the pride and boast of our city, and Indelibly connected with thc mem? ory of the unselfish proprietor.
