it) reserve for expected lady passengers, or
bis looks may not have been in bis favor, or
be muy have hud loo much musk?on his

whole wrong consista in litis, that the ag
grieved senator tried to take u lady's place
and was ordcredyMlt of it. There is no evi
dence to show that lie or she earriud the cus
tomary fun und luneh-busket, or wore, her
veil, her bonnet, or even her chignon. There
Is Mason to believe that she dressed like n
iiiiiti, thai she disputed lier place like a liti
gous niuii, und bln3lered among the ladies
like an ill-bred man, and that she wot finally
carried out of the cars, and not kicked out.
This is the substance of Wright's wrong.
Now us to Wright's proposed sacrlliee,
not for lite sex, as one would suppose, bul
for the race. Hero the lawyer so clearly ap
pears tluil we must ask the outraged lady's
pardon for resorting sometimes lo the mas
culine pronoun. We do not mean lo preju
dice the case by this little change.
"We see Hie Wright and wo approve It too."
We know the cause is lost unless she can
maintain the character of an outraged lady,
nut Wright before the Labor Convention at
Washington, or the Legislature at Columbia,
is not ii whit more feminine than Mrs. Dr.
Walker in her coat and pantaloons. Well,
then, Mrs. Wright in Columbia proclaims
that he will spend his hist cent In vindica
ting her right to sit in the ladies' cur, or us
she expresses it, in testing tho virtue of the
Civil Higlit.s biil. That bill shall be liquida
ted by the turning inside out of Uncivil
Wright's pockets. But, as Tope says:
"Woman's at best a contradiction si 111,"
for it was this same lady who engaged the
Labor Convention :it Washington "lo create
"a fund to prosecute any such case of ex
clusion tinder the Civil Rights bill, and lo
'^est the virtue of ihulrfMl." That is the
fund that Wright intends lo work on, and
we have no doubt that be will even consent
lo receive his fee for bis work. Whether he
succeeds in the c;i3c or not, she can certain
ly make mon1 in that way than by stitching
or darning stockings. White women are so
poorly paid, what can we expect but an
eifbrl on their part to secure a larger sphere
and more remunerative employment. Let
Mrs. Wright go ahead with her railroad case.
He will make a good thing out of it ami put
money in her purse!
Wt: received, last evening, a copy of a
bill now before tho Legislature granting to
certain parlies, in consideration of a small
j royalty to be paid lo the Slate, Iho exclusive

of our navigable streams. Wo print In
another column the bill, together with some
shrewd comment; from u writer in the Co
lumbia i'lmsnly, who leaves Hille to be said
in regard t<> the expediency of the measure.
We ourselves favor free trade, as well us in
phosphates as in all oilier commodities; bul
if such a monopoly us tho bill provides for
is io be created, justice lo the taxpayers de
mands that il )>e sold under the auctioneer's
hammer, so that Hie State may reap the
largest possible advantage therefrom. Wo
shall watch with some interest the fate of]
the bill. _ _
It is KRPOKTRn that (Joveruor Scott will
veto the bill to provide for the payment in
coin of the interest on the Slate debt. His
Excellency is not opposed to the bill, which
was ialroduccd wiih his approval and is
fathered by his financial put, but he may
have sold out his bonds, or bo mad because
the House would not agree to pay principal
as well as interest in coin. And if ho docs
veto tho bill, we suppose that It will be pari
of the programme to pass it over tho veto
without more ado. In this way Scott will
seem anxious lo save his ' beloved Slale,"
and the bond and stock Ring will not be
disappointed'
The Radical members of the South Caro
lina Legislature are usually in the market,
but their price not to put loo line a point
upon it?is a Iceile high, considering the
quality of the article. During the debate
on the bill lo pay the Slate debt in coin,
votes in its favor fold at from $10 lo $2?U.
One comfort is that votes will be cheaper
later in the session. The members take a
practical view of things, and count their
honors and dignities by dollars:
