Con ?5iii Insurance.
[Prom h : New York Sun.]
Would lt not be well for some speculative
fealuB to start the project of a Conjugal Insur?
ance Company.
Among the questions to be answered by appli?
cants for insurance, the following would not be
Inappropriate:
Are free-lovers numerous in you neighborhood ? |
Who are the clergymen in your parish 1
The Ku log i st* of thc Seducer.
[From the New York World.)
If such friends of Richardson as vice-President
Colfax and the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher
had not affronted the public 6< 'ise of decency by
ostentatious sympathy fora stduccr and Justin
osti?n of his conduct, the pres* would have no
other duty in connection willi this tragedy than
fj laid upon it in the similar cases which are of
nach frequent occurrence. Richardson waa no
?ach novice ss not to know that a man who se?
duces a wife from her allegiance carries his life in
kia hand, and may expect to forfeit lt to the ven?
geance vf the outraged husband. He dared the
eoasequenees, and they came. He doubtless
?ought the prize worth the risk and the forfeit;
sad we will do him the Justice to say that, BO far
ia the public is Informed, be met his fate without
any unmanly quailing, or any protest against its
righteousness. The avenging Nemesis, which is
ever on the path of such transgressors, speedily
overtook him; and if his eulogists had not at?
tempted to blnnt and pervert the moral sense of j
tte community, it would be safe, as well as chari?
table, to dismiss him to his reward without any
?.marka.
' Bat when the most popular and eloquent divine
kn the country, and the second functionary ia the
government, undertake to "blazon evil deeds and
consecrate a crime," their attempt to lower the
moral tone or the community cannot pass wlth
oet rebuke. Whatever lenity might be practiced
.awards the infatuated parties to this tragedy in
consideration of their terrible punishment, ls
.wallowed up in a feeling or Indignation and dis?
gust against those who have prostituted their iu
lience and talents in defence of an intercourse
which the moral sentiment of the community con?
demns.
Mr. Beecher cannot escape by turning upon the
?.bile, as he did in his funeral remarks yester?
day, and denouncing, in a strain of coane vitu?
pera ti ou, those who regard the marriage tie as
.sered. "The lion in his strength," said he,
meaning Richardson, "and in his own fastness, ia
skit to defend himself; bat no sooner has the ar?
row of the huntsman hud him low, than hf is tel
mpon by every vile thing, every fly. every eraxol
mo worm. Now that he is down fresh lies are
SH around about him, and death, that ls to most
.men a truce to old enemies, ls the very arraying
st* battle against him." It is not against the
.ead seducer, but against you, Mr. Beecher, and
.?ch as yoa that the public indignation is let
mose, on this truly ' mournful occasion. Had
yoa, and such as you, been content to
.sst a silent mantle of charity over the
erring, and withhold the public eulogies by
which you have shocked the sensibilities of right
mink lng people, there would have been no occa?
sion for you to stand defiantly on the defensive,
and interpose the perforated corpse of your dead
"Von" as a shield between you and the public
teasure. lt ls against you and such aa yon that
fte scorching breath of fncenaed virtue ls directed;
COM, who, without the apology or temptation,
?ree from the passions which blinded those Illicit
lovers, coolly insult a Cbrisiiau community by
fulsome and indecent praises of their guilty con?
nection. But for yoa, and such as you, this terri?
ble case would have operated as an Impressive
warning. By your eulogies and yonr marriage
ceremony, yon hold it up as an example.
The Indiana divorce was a fraud and a sham.
Yon married the parties knowing it to be a mere
Indiana divorce, procured on ex varie repr?sen?
tions, without notice to the offended husband,
tn a place distant from the real residence ol the
parties. Yon know. Mr. Beecher, and everybody
knows, that Hrs. McFarland would not have dar
si to apply for a divorce here in the State of New
York, where the parties resided. and the facts
would have been Investigated. In the eye of our
laws, and by the rules of our courts, the marriage
with McFarland has never been dissolved; and
your performance of the marriage ceremony mode
you not only a Justiiler of seduction, but au abet?
tor of bigamy.
In the light of the sworn testimony taken in
McFarland's application for the custody of bis
children, this is as clear a case or seduction aa
i was ever proved by evidence. The landlady of
the house lu Amity street swears thai Mrs. Mc?
Farland applied to ber for a room for Richardson,
and that he came there in consequence of an ar?
rangement which she had made for him. The
room adjoined hers, and the inmatea of the hoase
testify that she was frequently lu It in the absence
cf her husband. All this might be innocent
enough, ir lt were not for the light thrown back
' apon lt by the subsequent developments. She
' afterwards abandons her husband and puts her
' self under Richardson's protection. When he
' la wounded, she goes to Mr. Sinclair's house
and takes care of him, passes whole days and
whole nights alono with him, bestowing the
most endearing caresses apon bim, and per
?utting lt to be understood in Mr. Sinclair's
family, and by other acquaintances, that she and
Richardson were under an engagement of mar?
riage. lt is impossible to resist the conclusion
that she forsook her husband In the expectation
cf marrying Richardson; that be hud knowingly
McltM that expectation, aud bad thereby alienat?
ed her from her husband; and that the rnatana
divorce-procured probably by the friendly Inter?
vention and assistance of Mr. Colfax-was the
. consommation of a purpose which had been
formed while the parties were occupying ad
- /sining rooms in Amity street.
And upon conduct such as this Mr. Beecher be?
stows his blessing and benediction I With thia
history before the public In the shape or sworn
. testimony, he had the effrontery to stand ap be
: aide Richardson's corpse, and declare that "both

TMS KILLING OF TOLBERT.
A Radical Aeeoaut.
Tvs following ls the Radios! version of tbs

About hair-past seven o'clock on the night or

White Ha noel, started ror tho capture or Tolbert.
The/ hail received lnrormallon that there was to
be a wedding at widow Hinton's residence, about
three miles from Greenwood, near Abbeville, and
while on their way learned that Tolbert was there.
After securing their horses In a neighboring thick?
et of pines, they started for the house. When n*ar
the house Brown, Freescand Manuel stopped.whlle
Hoillngshcad slyly crept up and looked In the
window ar the end of the house He saw Tolbert
sitting by the fireplace, conversing with a large
party ^f his friend*. Presently tome one came
.ut of thc door, when he crept under the house,
remaining there some ten minutes. While there,
he heard Tolbert relate to his friends how he es?
caped from the Penitentiary. As soon as the per?
son sr ho came out of thc door returned into the
house, he caine out or his hiding place and went
to his Comrades end told them Tolbert was there.
He asked what they should do, as there were
some forty men and women th-re. They all agreed
to take Tolbert or die there. Then they pulled off
their coats, and. drawing their revolvers, started
?or the door. With one hound they alighted iu
Cte raid-He or the floor, Hollingshe.id foremost,
saying. "Bill Tolbert, you are mv prisoner;
surrender, or I'll kill you." Tolbert run
through the housR to a door at the foot or th?
stairs among the women, the house being full.
Hollingshead followed, and while grappling with
Tolbert, received from him his first shot, which
struck him In the side, making a slight flesh
wound, and passing nut of the door opposite.
-They still strnggled with each other, when Tolbar!
ired a second time, the si;ot piercing the ceiling
sverhead. Brown at that moment rushed In the
room aud fired. Tolbert Mi<m tired his lust shot,
the ball parsing fhrongh llollinrshead's leg. Man
.eland Breese nov.- entered, and shot* were fired
m quick succession by Msnu.-i und Brown, Tolbert
Bl thc meantime throwing up hi* arms and ex
