THE LANCASIIIUK LASS.-Thc Academy of
Music was well tilled on Saturday night, thc play
bel?g "Thc Lancashire Lass," which, without any
novelty of plot or particular brilliancy of dialogue,
ls something of u favorlie with play-goers. The
plot is simple In the extreme, and us stale ns
lt is simple. Hutu Kirby, (Miss Lilli? El?
dridge,) a pretty country girl, betrothed to Ned
Clayton, (Mr. James O'Neil,) a young: engineer,
consents to elope with Robert Redburn, (Mr. Harry
Wood,) n prod?gate adventurer, being led to make
this step by jealousy, which ls ingeniously ru
mentcd by Kale Oraslon, (Miss Lizzie Herbert,)
who desires to be revenged on Ned Clayton for n
fancied wrong. Whoa on thc brink ol ruin. Ruth
la saved by thc devotion or Ned Clayton,
and Redburn, completely foiled, returns
to- London, where he wins thc love of
fanny Danville, (Miss Laura Alexander) a
beauty and un heiress. Mr. Danville (Mr. Knapp)
refuses bis consent, and threatens to cut off
Fanny with n shilling; lint Redburn duds an un?
expected ally in "a party by the name or John?
son,'' (Mr. Snmuol Ryan,) who, ror a share in Hie
spoils, ngrees to secure the consent or thc stern
parent. In thc nick or lime this "party by the
name of Johnson" saves Redburn from expulsion
from Mr. Danville's house, and reminds bis "old
pal," Mr. Danville; that he will prove him guilty
orrorgery and desertion unless he consents to thc
mulch. Fanny Danville overhears both the
charge mid the confession of her father, and ap?
peals for aid to Redburn, who treats ber willi elu?
ting coulempi, aud declines to have any further
connect lon with so Infamous u set. Ned Clayton,
driven. to dcsperntlou by the losa of Ruth,
seeks consolation In thc bottle, finding n
worthy companion in "the pnrty by Hie
name of Johnson," who, while la n stuto or
Intoxication, ls thrown into thc river. Redburn
charges Clayton with thc crime, aud proposes to
Ruth to refrain from giving evidence ngnlnst mc
accused If she will become his (Rcdburn's) wife.
This proposition abc rejects with acorn, and decs
to an old admirer, Jelllck (Mr. W. II. Hurton.)
who has thc prisoner In charge. Ruth promises
her hand to Jellie!: if ?tc will connivo at thc- escap?
of Clayton. This he consents to do, but Redburn
makes bis appearance as Clayton ls about to
make lils escupe. Clayton closes with Redburn
and gets off safe, while Rnth holds Redburn In
cheek until Hie appearance of Sergnnt Donovan,
(Mr. Harris,) who halls Redburn as tho well-known
criminal, "Slippery Dick," and hauts him oir lo
juli. The Inst net linda Ruth married to Clayton
In Australia. The only bjot on their happiness ls
thc charge of murder against Clayton. Tins ls
removed by thc dying .confession nf Mr.
Danville, who acknowledges that bc did
the deed. Redburn appears on tho scene ns a
famishing bushranger, and as ho ls about to shoot
Clayton ls killed by ono of lils pursuers, who
ls "Hie party by thc name or Johnson."
The plot, aa will bo aeon, ls bold und disjointed
lu thc extreme, but there arc some tclliug slttin
llotia, ntnl they were made the best or. .Misti
Hillridge as Ruih played with un energy and dra?
matic force which she lind not before shown on
the Charleston stage, and In tho lock-up scene
excited thc audience to active enthusiasm. The
neting of this lady throughout the play waa natu?
ral and unaffected, as well us fervent. Miss Alex?
ander lind but little to do, but she did that little
well, rising In warmth and passion far above the
level or "School" and "Home." In what may
be called " thc courting scene," Miss Alexander's
by-ploy was capital. Mr. James O'Neil, ns Ned
Clayton, showed s manliness and a rugged clo
queuco worthy of great praise, lils acting was
easy nnd Himple, but /orelhle and pointed. There
was no piling np the/ rigony, no pathos, but every
catching sentiment was cheered to the echo. Mr.
Wood, ns Robert Redburn, did bis best w .li an
unthankful part. It ls hard to bc a villain grace?
fully. * Mr. Samuel Ryan, as "tho party by the
name or Johnson," made a decided hit. lila
make-up wns thoroughly original, nnd his acting
excellent. Thc humor of lils neting mode the au?
dience laugh until their sldcn ached. All tho less?
er parts were well lilied,^
Tlie scenery was pretty-tho "Old plor at Egre?
mont" particularly so, and the spirited playing of
tho orchestra filled up pleasantly the Intervals be?
tween tho acts.
