use of asterisks, hands, little cuts and figures

Relatively to the size of the town, the quacks

ried this species of vulgarity (which really lias
a serious ami lamentable side,) to a monstrous
extent. Even Harnttm, unscrupulous though
he avows himself to be, denounces, in Iiis
Hook on Humbugs, tho "bcd-biig-soulctl fel
lows," (the epithet Is his, and is so well de
served that WO reproduce It without upology,)
who proclaim the virtues of their corn-plas
tera or quack medicines on places Hint should
be held sacred from such associations. He
mentions that tho Legislatures of New Hamp
shire and Now York were compelled to pass
laws to prevent this misdemeanor; and it Is
Just possible that we In England may be forced
into tho adoption of a similar mcasuro.
