Notwithstanding the ravages o? tho great
lire, wc .have still too many comfortable
.street comers in Charleston. There aro
places which a. lounger cannot pass, walls
which attract lue buck or shoulder or an
idle intu? as potouily as the magnet attracts
steel, counters over which he must loll,
sunny euri? ?Iones where he must deposit
his weary frame and chatter while he rests
oases cherished by the Arab of thc streets
as fondly as by his dusky brother of the
desert. Tiie tastes of the two are conge?
nial; beth love to haunt the majestic vicin?
age of public buildings-to linger whore
they can wutch tho current v/i trade p issing
by, to encourage the industries und the
pumps of iiie bj the ragged, jovial contrast,
and appreciative, philosophic patronage of
thoir presence. Whether the Aral) leans
against a Palmyran templo or a City Hall,
whether he watches Hie raoviuir. caravan of
pilgrims or the drift of clerks und merchants
along East Bay, whether ho lounges around
the Ca*tba or tho Citadel Square-the con?
viction upon his mind is undisturbed, that
Hie world owes him a living, aud that some?
how or other thc debt has to be paid.
There is only one marked difieren ce be?
tween the kindred races of which wo speak.
The child of the desert totally abstains from
spirituous liquors-even from wine. Tho.
Bedouin of thc streets totally-doesn't; on
the contrary, he goos to a grog-shop like :i
camel to a fountain, and takes a draught suf?
ficient for many days; he buzzes around a
spigot like a bee around a solitary lily of the
valley: he devours strychnine like a rut.
Our hearts are sad to think of these Arabs
amongst us-thc30 squatters in tho thin
oases of the South-these waifs, stranded
on the storm-swept coasts of civilization
these "out-of-works" in modern society.
The Tribune, a sort of Koran among these
American Islamites, classifies them as fol?
lows: They arc, 1. Those who knowhow to
do nothing; 2. Those who can do something,
but nothing that any one wants lo pay them
for doing; ?. Those who ore not willing to
do what they can do, and might lind to do,
but will only work at aoraothing lighter,
more genteel and better paid; 4. Those who
insist on staying where there is no work for
them, instead of seeking it where it might
be fourni and who gram bio like the drunkon
potato digger, "If you want your potatoes
..dug, just fetch thom on, I ain't going to
'.'run all over the lot after them."
We, for our port, have much more reason
than the Tribune has to warn the laborer
against tho irrational overcrowding of cities,
when tho country is full of work, when more
than a dollar a day is paid to laborers on
the sugar estates of Louisiana, to the tim?
ber-cutters of the West and South, to the
ditchers and drainera along the railroads
when men can be supported on all our broad
plantations. It is tho Radical thunderer,
and not we, from whom the admonition to
idle laborers comes: "Here and there work
?'stops, and men are discharged; as tho pre
"miura on gold declines, nearly everything
"else is sold cheaper, and wages share thc
"downward tendeucy; but there is still work
"for those who can do it and will seek it
"aright." Auy resort is better than pauper?
ism, or a shiftless and predatory Gipsy lifo,
to which not a few of our "follow-citizcas,"
both in town and country, at present incline.
From the time whon wc tried in childish tre?
ble the Bongs of the nursery, we have had an
interest in "the mau all tattered and torn." In
later years tho tenrlor sympathy was renewed
and deepened by Dickens' immortal portrait
of Micawber. And it ?nts us to the heart when
wc are constrained to Bay to tho hopeful

A Kit of Romance.
The New York Sun tells a sad and roman?
tic incident of the career of thc benefactor
whose death two h?misph?res are mourning:
A number of years ago, when Mr. Pea?
body was just entering upon his career of
success as a business man, in Baltimore, he
met by chalice, in the street, a poor girl,
reno was but a child, but whoso pleasing ?
face and gentle manner attracted his notice. 1
Questioning her aa to her parentage and 1

worthy his rogurd, and a fit subject for his

Oar Swamp Lands.
Perhaps the most commendable feature in
the recent message of Governor Scott is the
proposition looking lo thc drainage and re?
clamation of the immense tracts of swamp
