formerly possessed ; but, overtaken os they
were by Hie common disaster, it is pleasing
to know that they have enough capital re?
maining to pay off all their outstanding lia?
bilities, and enable them to resume opera?
tions under the nams.! so long'familiar to
the incrchauts of the State. The Southern
States are fairly launched on the title which
leads to fortuno, the whole Southern coun?

and with a prospect of continued high prices
for tho Southern staples and an active de?

The Charleston banks lo which we par?

1. The Union Hank, which has been in ex?
istence for about half a century, and has
always been marked by prudent manage?
ment, a foaturc which was impressed upon
it especially by tho late Rene Godard, for a
long time its president The original capi?
tal of thc Union Hank was $1,000,000; but
thia was seriously diminished during tho
war. The bank is now doing business, and
ita moans arc expected to be enlarged at an
early day. Vf. H. Smith, Esq., th? presi?
dent, a successful and wealthy merchant or
this city, will dcubUess continue to conduct
ila affairs with prudence and cautious care.
2. The Planters' and Mechanics' Hank,
always a favorite institution, was established
in tho beginning of thia century by the Into
William Aiken-father of ex-Governor 1
Aiken-John Robinson, the Messrs. Ravc
nel, and oilier prominent merchants. Mr.
Thomas Blackwood WA3 its president for
many yews, und Daniel Ravcnel, Esq., the
prcscul president, hos been connected with

of this bank, $1,000,000, was Tor the most |

In this department the bank did a largo and
lucrative business, while itu general credit
was so good that Rank of Charleston bills
were taken at par in Europe. Among the
founders of the bank were the lalo General
James Hamilton, who was tho first presi?
dent, James Adger, Kerr Boyce and II. W.
Conner, aa well aa tho lion. G. A. Tren
holm, Honry Gourdin, Esq., and C. T.
Lowndes, Esq., the present president, who
has contrived to meet all the liabilities
of tho bank and retain a surplus equal to
about 25 per cent, on the capital of $3,000,
000.
4. The People's Bank waa established a j
few years before the war, with a capitol of I
$1,000,000. This bank suffered heavily ; but
judicious financiering baa enabled it to re?
deem ita bills and hare a aufficicnt capital
with which to resume bnsinesa. This bank
waa well managed by tho lato president, D.
L. McKay, and enjoyed a high reputation,
which lt still rutaina.
Tho Uireo banka last named may bo ex?
pected to go into business before tho lut I
January with an active capital of about
$1,200,000. Thia, added to tho capital of
tho two national banks, tho Loan and Trust
Company and thc Union Bank, will give us
an active banking capital of about $2,250,
000, which, although far below tho $14,
000,000 of capital which wo had in 1860,
will materially relievo the financial pressure
which now restrains the froo course of trudo.
