DBATII OF GENERAL WILLIAM E. MARTIN*.
A Baltimore telegram bringa thc tidings or the
death or General William E. Martin, which took
place In that eily on Thursday. The health or
General Martin had for some time been precari?
ous, and while lu New York he was stricken with
apoplexy. From this attack he never entirely
recovered.
General Martin was fifty-eight or (irty-ninc
years or agc, and was born In beaufort District.
About twenty-five years ago, he came to Charles?
ton and Boon took a respectable position at tho
har. He was elected clerk or thc State Senate,
the duties of which position he filled with dili?
gence and zeal until thc incoming or thc Radical
administration. General Martin was a general
In the State militia bcrorc thc war. As apuro and
upright man, a ralthrui and conscientious ofllccr,
and a disinterested and devoted son or his nativo
State, he won golden opinions during his useful
lire, and his death will bc long and sincerely re?

Mr. J. N. M. Wohltmann, who was burnt out by
the fire on Wednesday night, for thc present has
occupied the store of Messrs. Farrar Brothers,
corner of Cumberland and East Hay streets.
The South Carolina Railroad gives notice that
on and after the 16th Instant, the local rates on
cotton from Augusta to Charleston will be one
dollar and arty cents per bale. Tho Central Road
bas established the same rate from Augusta to
Savannah.

lows: That there was an old feud between Harley,
the deceased, and broughton, the prisoner. This
had been smothered, and the parties met on ap?
parently friendly terms. Some time In June last
an Invitation to a shooting match was given by
Harley, and Broughton walked with him to the
spot -r> store near Monck's Corner. After several
shots had been made, a controversy arose between
Harley and Broughton, the*formor being very
Ojhnslve and threatening to kill Broughton. The
latter said that he was a boy and unable to
cope with him, and thc quarrel was stopped by
aomc of the party. It was subsequently renew?
ed by FTarldj, and Broughton thinking thal ho
intended putting his threat In execution, he

have been a violent man, while iTronghiO.n was
quito young. Thc latter was represented hy

and ability. Judge Carpenter charged the Jury
at some length, showing thc difference between

Remarks were also made by Messrs. Mclndoo
ind J. P. Britton, and also by several persans
who were not workingmen. The burden of the
ipecchca, generally, was an exhortation to those
present to Bland together in tho maintenance of
their rights, and to organizo at ouco for mutual
protection.

was carried that the chairman be authorized to

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEWS.
The meeting last evening, at which there
was au attendance of some three hundred
or four hundred workingmen, is ample
evidene that a chord has been struck, and
the respotlslvc feeling was echoed by all who had
assembled with honest intention. The remarks
of thc workingmen wore conveyed with much
Impressiveness, and lt ls to bc regretted that thc
speakers who followed did not embrace thc same
linc of argument. That there ls*a desire for the
establishment of a permanent organization there
ts no.qucsilon; but If, as was thc caso last even?
ing, a rehash of politics ls to bc presented, the
good aimed at will become a dead letter. A necessi?
ty does exist for a thorough organization of the
workingmen of this community, and much good
will bc accomplished. Now, it is suggested that
tho various branches of tradesmen in this city call
separate meetings and discuss thc plan; and
when a thoroughness of action bas been accom?
plished, let a general meeting bo held, and such
speakers selected as know thc wants to be met.
Let us avoid nil distractions by the Introduction
or political speakers-demagogues who arc cater
lug for their own advancement, and would uso
thc workingman for thc benefit of self. It ls not
to bc supposed that all the officers ot the meeting
last night were cognlzaut of thc character of |
those who bad been invited to address the assem?
blage; but lists a source of mortification that
Radical effrontery refused to hide its hoad for one
