AN HOUR. AMONO THE PAINTERS.-Tho largo
number of clllzcus who visited Hie urt pallor j on
thc corner of llroad und Church streets yesterday,
afforded evidence, not of Idle curiosity, but of
rcnl appreciative ta3te. Hundreds of our busy
men stole in on their way up and down town to
enjoy ti half hour of optical pleasure, and wc
lake it for granted that n very considerable pro?
portion selected pictures which they determined
to tiny dm in? Hie auction sales to day nnd to?
morrow. These commence ut Iii o'clock M., and
ll will be thc '-Ault or our people If they allow this
handsome collection to leave town without secur?
ing tho liest and most attractive of thc pictorial
adornments embraced therein.
PIM.-At hull-pun IO o'clock, last night, tho
alarm of lire was sounded, and tho few persons
who wore on Susi Hay ut that hour hastened to
thc spot designated, and found thc flumes Issuing
from thc whole-ale grocery store of Messrs. H.
Rialto A Co. As nearly as could be ascertained, thc
Ure originated in thc counting room, In thc rear
or the store, and faclug Lodge alloy. At first,
there was only a glimmer of light, but tho dense
volumes of smoke that soou poured through every
aperture told or the fearful conflagration within.
Fully u half hour elapsed before thc engines were
on tho ground, Ihci iartu not being given prompt?
ly by tba steeple men. Once on tho spot, thc fire
mcu battled with thc destructive element nobly.
As soon as an entrance was ciTcctcd, thc Dames
leaped forth, drlvtug the spectators across thc
street, and even compelling thc firemen to keep
nt a respectful distance, lu a short lime, thc en?
tire building was lu tlames'and thc smokostronm
lng ii om ihe windows or Mr. John N. M. Wohlt
man's wholesale grocery next door showed that
thc Ure was gaining ground. Thc bremen worked
willi desperate cnorgy, bul wore unable to
save thc stores or Messrs. Rlattc and Wohlt
man, thc Hames having too much headway,
and thc Inflammable nature of a part of thc
stock rendering their effort s comparatively futile.
Thc Marlon Coffeehouse, kept by Mr. Metz, on
thc south side of Lodge alley, also caught, and
thc upper portion of thc building was burnt; the
slock and fixtures were also materially injured,
though thc furniture was saved. Tito llrciucu
succeeded In conflulug the flames to Hiscc throe
buildings, but for some time thc largo establish?
ment or Mr. B. O'Neill was In great danger, and a
portion or thc stock was removed. Thc stoics of
Mr. Wolhlmann and Klnttc A Co. wore in a build?
ing owned by Mr. Poinclgnon, who was Insured In
Hie Loudon, Liverpool and Globe Companies, C. T.
Lownde.-,agent. Rlattc ACo.'sslock was insured In
thc same company,In Colburn A Howell's agencies
ann thc German Mutual, General John A. Wago?
ner, agent. Mr. WotiUman was insured In New
York companies, with no agents in this city. The
Marlon Coffeehouse building was owned by Mrs.
Marjcnhoff, and occupied r>y Mr. C. Metz, both or
whom wore Insured In thc German Mutual.
The origin or the Uro ls unknown, but ls bcllved
to be purely accidental. Messrs. Klnttc A Co. had
Just received a heavy stock, and lt was stated
that there were over two hundred barrels of
whiskey In thc store at thc time of the fire. A
portion of Mr. Wohltman'a stock was saved,
though in a damaged condition. Thc sympa?
thies of the entire cffmmunii y are with thc ener?
getic young merchant -i who h.ive hoon thc VtC;
tims of this serious disaster.

IMPORTANT DECISION OK JUDOK BRTAX CON
' CK it s iso 8AI.ES IN BANKRUPTCY.-Tho following
] report of an interesting case tried before the
I United States Court will be read with interest:
United Stales of America, District or Sooth Caro?
lina-District conn-lu Bankruptcy.-In the
matter of J. D. Magill ami W. J. Magill, ex
Earle tho Bank or Charleston for thc use or K
I. Beach.
The petitioner held ajudgment obtained against
i the bankrupts as executors of their father, upon a
> bond executed by him in his life Hmo and unpaid
nt lils death. Thc petition was tiled to set up tho
lien of the Judgment in this court, as the bank
r mid s had divided all the property or their rather's
. estate, and had used lt as their own. The lien
had been duly proved and recognized In this
court, and thereupon an order of sale was entcr
' ed, In which no terms had been specified, and
which, therefore, required a salo for caah. A mo?
tion was made on behalf of certain creditors of
thc bankrupts, who held liens posterior to tho
i lieu or thc Judgment, to modify the terms af?ale
i so ns to require bul one-third ( ' ; ) cash, remainder
in ono nnd two years, secured by bond and n
1 mortgage of thc property. The reason given for
i the motion was that a sale for cash In the present
I stringency of thc money market would neccssarl
ly cause thc property to brlug but a low price,
and would give thc party holding thc first lien
- control of the bids. On the other side it was In
. slsted Hint tho claim of the petitioner was under
, ajudgment, that this court morely gives force
1 and circet to thc Hen of the Judgment, and that a
judgment creditor in tho ordinary courts has tho
) right to sell for cash.
. lils Honor, Judge Bryan, decided in substance
>, as follows:
It ls admitted that under ordinary circum?
stances u Judgment creditor can soil thc property
' of lils debtor for cash. Not only would tho courts
i be slow to deprive him ol thc advantages which
his vigilance-a quality which tho law admires
has secured to him. But besides this thc other
- creditors, who havo not been so fortunate, can
look to the debtor himself aud his fiiiuvo gains
as a source of satisfaction for their claims. In
bankruptcy, tho cane ls different. There the pro
' nerty of the debtor, ls Impounded and he goes
i free. Ills creditors have nothing else to which
, they can look for payment but tills property In
thc hands of tho court. For this reason the court
' ls called upon to consider thc interest of all tho
r creditors, and to secure, an rar as ls pos
, sibie, thal equality In which this court,
which ls, In thc truest sense, a court or equity,
1 may bo said to delight. When this equality cannot
bc secured by reason of thc preval u ng law of liens,
> thc court then scckB so to administer tho property
as to secure the largest price, and thus obtain
. the greater fund for dlstribullon. In the present
, caso Ibo petitioner sought thc aid or ibis court,
j Ho can only obtain ll under tho rules of tho court.
A sale for cash can only servo lils interests. It
< may ruin the interests of other creditors,
i Thc motion ls granted. But whilst the court
. seeks to nhl thc wishes or? thc other creditors, In?
jury must not be done by Its action to thc Just
. rights of tho petitioner, ir ho bo made to wall
. for his money, lt should bo made sure for bim,
U t tin i nier be moditieri ns proposed, with thc
further -dinon that tho bond bo signed "b)
B personal si *urlly, to bc approved by thc as
sign?e."
TUB TOWN CLOCK AOAIN.-There was some
motion of tho hands yesterday, but they did not
mark time, and thc striking was wild. Thc City
Sheriff ls ciock-kccpcr under Pillsbury, and tho
pair ought certainly to bc able to keep the uta
r.hlne in running order.

Thc small yield or Sea Island Cotton (peculiar

thc greater value of Rs long staple, and a chango

having fully proven that tho earlier maturity of ]
other kinds greatly lessens the danger from

this subject In tho cultivation of Cotton by thc
