night, was promptly accepted. A communication
was read from lumber dealers asking that thc
o ill ce bc abolished; and, Irstly, one of his former
subs was appointed, temporarily, to fill his place.
OLD TIME OUT OF JOINT.-The city monitor
failed again yesterday to warn folks of the fleeting
diours, but persistently kept Rs hands pointing at
.six. A variety of sounds, ami strikes innumera?
ble were heard Morfhay evening, and lt is now
stated thal thc spur-wheel is broken and further
motion suspended. When thc clock was repaired,
ll was warranted to keep time for a stated period.
St. Michael's clock is a public necessity and should
.receive careful attention.

Wm. T. Blrdsull, a drummer from foreign parts,
was arrested yesterday for violating tho munici?
pal laws relating to that class. He was taken to
thc august tribunal presided over by thc Mayor,
and required by that functionary to give bonds
1 for his appearance thc next day. By the advlco
of his lawyers, Messrs. Duryea A Cohen, this was
refused, and he sued out n writ of habeas corpus.
This was heard al 12 o'clock before Magistrates
Whiting and Mlnott, mid Blrdsell was set ut lib?
erty. This ls thc first instance in which that per?
secuted class, known as drummers, have brought
the habeas corpus lo bear upon their tormentors,
and thc success-of thc movement'will doubtless
Induce other ad venturers to brave the danger or
a capture.

somewhat exercised.last night because, In exam?
ining thc Treasurer's books, ho found $62,000 In

Alderman Geddings presented a resolution that,
whereas many persons arc defaulters and have
railed to make their returns, and lt was the wish
or Council to avoid thc disagreeable necessity or
publishing their names, that thc time or making
returns to thc City Appraiser bc extended to thc
15th or November. Carried.
Thc Mayor stated that tho annual meeting or
thc Chcraw and Darlington Railroad would soon
convene, and that ho had appointed Mr. Edwin
Rates to act as proxy for the city interest ia that
road. On motion, thc appointment was con?
firmed.
'Alderman Geddings stated that tho city owned
a large quantity of real estate In thc municipal
limits; many of thc leases bad expired, and he
called tor a prompt report from thc Special Com?
mittee appointed on that subject.
Alderman Barrow oirered a resolution that a
committee bc appointed to burn thc city currency
now in Hie vaults of thc treasury. Ile slated that
there wore $3500 or old and $48,000 or new issue.

comedy, to bc followed by a week or so of high
tragedy, and that In turn by the English Opera,
