INQUESTS.-Coronor Whiting held an inquest yesterday over the body ot thc little son of Mr. Buckley, round drowned tn a cistern on Sullivan's Island. Thc verdict of the Jury was "accidental drowning." An Inquest was also held over thc body or a colored in f ,i nt or n woman named Tay forgiving on St. Phillp street. FIRE IN THE WOODS.-Thc Columbia Phoenix or yesterday says: "During tho pnst rew days our- streets have been partially darkened by clouds of smoke, caused by an extensive confla gration in tho woods, about seven miles above Co lumbia. Bn.L OF MORTALITY.-Thc Health Officer's report shows that during the week ending Octo ber 30th, there were thirty-three deaths lu the city-six whites and twenty-seven blacks. Of thc six whites, there were live romalo adults and ono female child. Of thc twenty-seven blacks, six were mule and nine female adults; live male nnd seven female children. RESULT OFTHI: LONUSIIOREMKX'S STRIKE.-Tho apprehensions expressed in recent Issues of TUE NEWS were yesterday realized, and owing to a lack of organization and of a determined spirit on thc pan or thc shippers, Hie Longshoremen's Union has carried Its point. Tho "strikers" yes terday, with Stevedore Stoddard at their head, resumed work on the bnrk A. U. Wyman, and on other vessels, the loading or which had been de layed by the strike. As n result or thc resolution passed by thc longshoremen that no member should work mr any stevedore not a member of thc Union under a penalty of ten dollars, most of thc stevedores were yesterday making overtures to Join the organization. Thc views or this pnper with rcgnrd to the pol icy-or, to speak more properly, tho wont of policy-with which the shippers have seen flt to meet tho aggressive course of the longshoremen, have already been given to the public; and weean only hopo that tho passive conduct- of tho em ployers in this Instance, may not result lu fresh and Injurious aggressions upon thc commercial interests of tho city. As rumor hath lt, one Alderman thought thal Alderman Thomas Jeirerson Mackey Bhould be expelled, mid did any amount of caucusing among his brethren to ascertain their views and bring them to his way of thinking, tn his efforts ho was quito successful, and on Monday reported eleven who had expressed their willingness lo meet the Issue nnd thc "shoot 1st" nnd vole for hi? expulsion. Hat, in the opinion of this Alder man who wished to break up the band of broth ers and displace their ..General," thirteen votes were necessary to do so and make "ono vacant chair" around the festive hoard, and he had only eleven votes. As he could not obtain any more, tho plan of otTerlng, seconding and Immediately pass ing a resolution for Immediate expulsion was abaudoncd. The plan of preferring charges and specifications against Hie disorderly member was then thought of. A conference was necessary, however, to as certain thc status of thc Aldormcn tn regard to this move, aud carly yesterday the Mayor re quested tho presence of all or them excepting Al derman T. J. Mackey, at thc Council Chamber at l o'clock. NO CAUCUS. At 1 o'clock thc Council Chamber was undis turbed by the presence of any or thc fathers. Tho marks of thc missiles ou thc window, table and wall were tho only signs that remained to remind one of thc shooting arfray.only n short time ago. That pistol was not there. (No one seems to know where lt wa9 carried after being "uncocked" by an Alderman who did lt thc day arter thc shoot ing at thc request or thc Mayor, who said, (so thc said Alderman says,) he was unaccustomed to such things.] About ten minutes pnst 1 Aldermen Geddings, Totter, Cunningham, barrow, Voigt aud the Mayor were present, lu a tow minutes, however, Aldermen Collins, E. YY. M. Mackey, Hampton, Small, Howard, Holloway, Drown, Mc Kinlay, L. F. and E. P. Wall, were reported as present. Aldermen Greene and Thorne ai.d T. J. Mackey, the latter of whom had not been sum moned, were ntiscnt. Most of thc members assembled in thc Connell Chamber, but arter remaining there awhile a number went into thc clerk's oftlcc and talked matters over. Ono colored Alderman stated as Ids opinion that tho Alderman they had come to expel would not be expelled, and would sue Council for "assault and battery If ll attempted to put him out." Another stated that he (Alder man T. J. M.) would fight lt out on that linc if any attempt was made to expel him. A bystander suggested that tr thc Alderman were expelled, he (T. J. M.) would organize a Council or his own, declare thc old one Illegal and with the new one attend to municipal affairs. Just ut this mo ment some one reported that tho Alderman In question .had arrived, whereupon a brother Alderman, with a dusky skin, thought that If there was any chance or n row the police had better be sent tor. Two o'clock arrived, and thc prospects or n meeting, although more than a suillclent number to constitute n quorum were present, seemed very unfavorable. Short ly after their return, however, all ortho Aldermen assembled In thc Council Chamber, and lt was de cided that a special meeting, and not a caucus, should bc held. Alderman Geddings then offered the tallowing resolution : ReeoMee , Thnt tho charge and specification pre ferred against Thomas J. Mackey, Alderman of Ward No. 8, or the City or Charleston, bo accepted and adopted, nnd th'at a copy thereof be served upon said Thomas J. Mackey, and he bc summon ed to appear before the City Council on tho 4th day of November, at 6 o'clock F. M., to answer sahl charge and specification, and abide thc order of said City Council thereon. The vote upon thc resolntlon was taken, and wc learn that tho following voted for it: The Mayor, Aldermen Geddings, Voigt, Barrow, Cunaingham, Totter, Collins, (white,) Holloway, Howard, Small, Brown, colored-ll. Aldermen Hampton aud Mc Kinlay, colored (2,) voted against thc resolution. Aldermen E. P. and L. F. Wall, colored, and E.W. M. and T. J. Mackey, (4,) not voling. Thc resolution was declared adopted. Council then adjourned until 0 o'clock to-mor row evening. WILL HE UK EXPELLEDf Some or the Aldermen in favor of expelling Al derman T. J. Mackey claim that he will bc cer tainly expelled, as Ihey will have votes sufficient to do BO legally. They claim that the tallowing will vole tar expulsion: Mayor, Barrow, Collins, Cunningham, Greene, Geddings, Potter, Voigt, E P. mid L. F. Wall, Small, Howard, Brown, Hol loway, (14,) and E. W. M. If a meeting of Council had been held last night tho subject would havo been brought up, unless tho Mayor had put on the "gag," nnd thoroughly discussed. It is thought tho monoy will never bo paid. We have heard one Alderman, who was ono of tho earliest and warmest supporters of the claim, as sert that tho claim waa not legally passed, and Hint If lt were brought up again ho would not support lt. THE FLOUR issrHCTon-TIE IS FINED FIFTT DOLLARS, AND APPEALS.-Yesterday Mr. O. N. Averill, Flour Inspector, was arraigned before thc Mayor to nnswor nie charge of violating the ordi nance "to prevcut or punish any person who may exercise, or attempt to exercise, thc duties of any municipal olllco, unless he shall have been duly elected lo thc snmc." Witnesses proved that Mr. Avotlll had hoon In specting Hour, and that being considered by tho Mayor a violation of said ordinance, ho Imposed a lino of $50. Messrs. Wilkinson and OUctarlst, who represented Mr. Averill, demurred to Ute juris diction or tho court, and when tho linc was Im posed, announced that they would appeal. Thc new Academy of Music, now nearly completed, has, wc arc grati fied to learn, been leased by that excellent gen tleman and prince of managers, John T. Manager Ford proposes, we learn, to open thc Academy of Music with a short scasoD or grand French opera; and ns he never does things by halves, we may expect first-rate artists, with a lull and trained orchestra and chorus, and a series or performances which win crowd thc house from pit to dome.
